What is "Armor Check Penalty" and how does it affect me and my loins?

I'm presently playing through the RPG hack-n-bonk computer game "Neverwinter Nights",
enjoying it more than three stuffed tortillas and a bag of fuck.

I'm at the end of Chapter One, I've got the last organ of the waterdhavian creatures to deliver
and the last Tyr-artifact (the book) to give to Judge Oleff.
I'm just hanging on to these two babies for now, I want to create
as many things as I can first in Marrok's forge, I have a rather lot of "raw materials".

I'm trying to decide what armor I will keep for myself and that "Armor check penalty" really vexes me.

I have a female Fighter with focus on dual-wielding, that is a Katana (Sword Saint +1)
and a short sword (FeyDuster +1), it seems to be the best balance.

Needless to say, I favor dexterity and speed to sheer punching-power (I clear a roomful of minions fast)
and I wonder if the heaviest armor-types (with the heaviest armor check penii) will cramp my style?

Also, about the upcoming expansion to NWN, "Shadow of Undrentide", I've heard the new additions to feats,
enemies, gadgets and stough will carry over to the original chapters as well (ie backwards-compatible),
like "Lord of Destruction" did for "Diablo II"'s older chapters.

The question is, WILL I be able to continue playing with my character I have now after adding "SoU"?
Or will the changes only take effect if a new adventure is begun?

I'd sure like to get my hands on that "Improved Cleave"-feature...

We appreciate your concern.
It is noted and stupid.

Check out the property sheet for the armor - are there seperate entries for the max dex bonus and the armor check? If not, then the armor check is probably the maximum available bonus to your base dex while wearing the armor.

Otherwise, no clue.

I'd imagine that SoU would just be another module to the base NWN engine, and that you could easily start it with any premade character.

IIRC, Armor Check Penalties only apply to certain skills (in particular skills like Hide and Move Silently). So they don't influence your Abilities like Dexterity. Just make sure the armor isn't too heavy [Smile]

And SoU won't affect any of your old characters.

Thanks, guys!

Yes, SoU is just an improvement and another adventure quest.

There are separate entries for Max Dex Bonus and Armor Check Penalty.
MDB on my "Banded Mail +1" is 1, which is low of course, and the ACP is -7.

Harry: Great! I don't use "Hide" and that sneak-stuff much anyway.
But what constitutes as "too heavy"? :-)
This is why I asked about the ACP and such; I need a new frame of reference.
I'm totally new to the DnD-ruleset, I don't mind telling ya.

Here's another strange thing, I hope there's a practical explanation for dis one.
These screenshots (I put them together) show my character stats in the SAME room, in my most recent point in the game.
The left image is from when I had just started, the right image is after loading the gamesave again, 20 seconds later.
Why the hell is my Attack Bonus JUMPING between "+10/+5" and "+3/-2" ???? I haven't changed a thing!

And aside from the diamond or adamantite, is there any practical use for the other jewels or are they just for selling?

Most jewelry is just for selling, but some have magical abilities.

Too heavy means that you carry more weight than you are capable of, and become encumbered. If you add even more weight, you can't move at all.

If you're new to the NWN DnD ruleset, you might want to browse around on http://nwn.bioware.net (especially the forums).

I just gave the game a try at a relatives house last night, it was awesome! it looks so good. Makes me still wish I had my old Baldurs Gate 2 character to import into the game.

The armor check penalty is a penalty that the armor adds to certain skills. Things such as Hiding, Move Silently, Climb, Balance, Swim, etc... Pretty much any skill that requires you to do a physical action that the armor might make more difficult.

You have it easy though, the computer does all of the calculations for you. I play the pen and paper D&D so I not only have to remember when it applies but also have to do the calc.

I'll keep that in mind, Tec. [Smile]

"Balance"? As in walking on a footbridge
across a stream?
I wouldn't want to go overboard wearing a fullplate and a tower shield...

Da_Bang80: You are correct, it is awesome,
and I'm just a simple Fighter, at that.

Oh, and you can't actually import BGII characters. It was planned (and is even mentioned in BGII), but somehow it wasn't implemented (probably too many changes to the game engine).

Also, the armour check penalty affects your ability to cast spells, but if you're a fighter that probably doesn't matter much. [Smile]

Hmm. No, I won't use spells of course. But I have thought about adding "Dodge" to my feats repertoir, for greater duelling!
Will "Dodge" be smitten by the Armor Check Penalty?

And has anyone else experienced the Attack Bonus value shifts I mentioned earlier?

Also, I've outlined some figures here in the character sheet, can someone tell me what they represent?

 -

The red one next to the dexterity figure, I assume it's a warning?

When red, it means that the bonus really should be more than that, but something is limiting it. Probably your armor - max dexterity bouns...
