So it was after the start of DS9, but before the start of Voyager. That means the last season or two of TNG, and the first two and a half of DS9. And maybe Generations.
Was it seen in DS9?

OK, that narrows it down to the episodes between "Ship in a Bottle" and "Descent, Pt. 1". And possibly Generations, depending on the stardate of "Caretaker".
