Is there a word in the English language for eating a sapient species other than your own? Because after this season, I feel like that’s a word I should know. At least Mirror Georgiou gets as good as she gives in this episode. Seasoning indeed.

Tilly is super-adorkable in this episode.

Clint Howard! And as an Orion?! I see what you’re trying to do here, show. Trying to distract me from this episode’s atrocious plot? Well, I’ll have you know that’s not... going to...

I’m sorry.

I seem to have lost my train of thought.

What was I saying?

Oh yeah. So, yup, the real plan is to blow up Qo’noS. We all saw that coming, alas. Ugh. And its not like what actually winds up happening is much better. Sure, we’re not killing billions, but we are essentially holding them hostage. And how exactly does that even work anyways? L’Rell’s gotta sleep sometime. Wait until then and then take the detonator. Or is this a dead man’s switch scenario where she has to enter a code every so often or the planet explodes. Ugh. So much stupid.

Tyler goes off with L’Rell. I guess that makes sense; he’s not gonna be trusted in Starfleet.

Burnham gets pardoned and reinstated to Starfleet. I guess I’m not mad about that. After all with the war over and Lorca gone, it’s either that or she goes back to prison.

Tilly gets her wish to be accepted to that officer training program or whatever. Good.

Poor Saru. (Y’know, I say that a lot.). After everything he’s been through and clearly showing he’s ready for the big chair, he doesn’t get it. Nope, off to Vulcan to pick up the new captain, whoever that is.

And there she is. NCC-1701. And she looks mighty good. At the very least we get confirmation that the Defiant wireframe seen previously is not indicative of how the Connie looks now. I’m not a ship guy, so I’m no expert, but does she have a few more glowy bits? We’ll see where this goes. Oddly, I’m less interested in seeing Pike or Spock than I am the rest of the original pilot crew. Maybe we’ll actually get a name for “Number One” after all these years...

Considering how radically they changed everything Klingon, I was sort of relieved that they didn't tackle the reimagining of the Constitution class with the same fervour. I don't care much for the cut-out sections in the pylons, though.

I bet Garth of Izar is going to be the next captain of Discovery.

I'm STILL trying to figure out what "event" this show is being based around. Still trying to figure out how Culber returns in a non-flashback way.

That ship looked good, yes...but it's not a Constitution, thus not Enterprise. More support for the "yet another universe" theory, as born out by the Defiant connection!

So, we set up recurring baddie Emperor Georgiou & probably guest-shot Tyler; that's cool. We ended the (annoyingly unseen) war with magic hand-waving; that sucks. Does this end the Klingon problems, then? I honestly have no interest in ever seeing them again, or hearing about their politics. They're bland, uninteresting, & seem to just be a cardboard cut-out "bad guy".

Always great to see Clint. He gets better & weirder with each passing year. Agreed on Saru; he really came into his own & should've been promoted.

Sooooo, no more spore-drive action, then? Has it fallen into Super Pursuit Mode realm, where it's only going to be used once in a while for really necessary drama needs?

Not sure if this is a cliffhanger, or it'll pick up doing whatever. Guess we'll find out in 12 to 19 months.

The whole storyline in the Orion base felt kind of silly. Why would the paranoid and racist Klingons allow a sketchy and untrustworthy species like the Orions a space on their revered homeworld? And nobody seemed to really object the presence of humans there.

The last scene also greatly showcased how unbalanced the Discovery is compared to the Enterprise. Nacelles too long, seondary hull to wide and flat, saucer to small, etc.

So Burnham is going to be the Disco's science officer. How does that work? She was previously first officer of the Shenzhou and (I think) a full commander. She definitely outtranked Saru, who was previously a Lt. Commander I presume, only to be promoted to full Commander as First Officer of the Discovery. So either Burnham is now of equal rank to him (if he stops being acting Captain - see below), which could be awkward. I doubt they'd expunge her record, give her a full pardon, reinstate her in Starfleet - then demote her.

Perhaps Saru will end up being the Captain. Or perhaps he'll have to keep stepping into the role, because Discovery captains are like the drummers in Spinal Tap. Looking forward to the freak gardening accident...

So looks like we're going to see another actor play Pike. Well, I hope so anyway - Bruce Greenwood was too old when he first played him in 2009, he's even older now. It'll mean he'll have been played by four actors, tying with Sarek.

I think they've said they're not going to cast anyone as Spock, he just presumably won't appear, which is plausible, he might have been on secondment at some point. And it's good, because nobody can play Spock but Nimoy. Quinto was OK - and he'd probably be OK if he agreed to reprise the role here, but I doubt they're going to be doing that. Plus Spock is well out in front, having been played by eight actors...

Starfleet might've recommissioned her, but do you really think she's ever going to be allowed anywhere near a command position ever again?

So... do the Klingons just give back the Federation space they conquered? Is the command code for that bomb just passed down from chancellor to chancellor for the next century or more? Are all those people who blamed Michael for starting the war suddenly going to be okay with her now that she gets credit for ending it?

This episode said the right things, philosophy-wise. A classic, barely-concealed morality speech directed straight at the American viewers. And I had lots of fun watching the characters. But the plot doesn’t hold together. And then... alien Nazi space vampires!

No wait, I mean the Enterprise. [Roll Eyes]

The new Enterprise looks like shit. Anyone who says that Discovery takes place in the same universe as TOS is deluding themselves. (The writers included.) The events, the characters, and the technology simply do not fit.

I hate to sound so negative, because I’m still very glad that Star Trek is back. But they didn’t (or shouldn’t) have to destroy the continuity of all the shows that came before to do it.

As XO he would still outrank her. The Enterprise-D had 3 commanders, Entprise-A 4 commanders and 3 captains.

Whoa now. While I have been (for the most part) positive about Discovery, I’ve been very respectful to those of you that feel otherwise.

But comparing this to the Na’kuhl? Let’s not say things we can’t take back, ‘cause them’s fighting words, man.

THEM’S. FIGHTING. WORDS.

Okay, okay... I went too far. It’s a completely random plot twist, but it’s not a completely STUPID random plot twist. [Wink]

Also, although I'm not a fan of changing the Enterprise at all, I will freely admit that it looks a LOT better than the JJ-verse Enterprise. And it does fit the feel of Discovery and the other ships we've seen.

Overall, I enjoyed the show. Maybe my expectations were too high. And I'm still upset that the writers feel they have to reinterpret everything that came before to tell their own story. But it was a decent, enjoyable story.

So the Star Trek YouTube channel just posted a “bonus scene”. Not sure how that’s different from a “deleted scene”, or if this is even canon, but...

Bonus Scene

Trill! Well, fake Trill.

And hey, remember when Section 31 was a secret organization? Y’know, one that didn’t call attention to itself with color coding?

Still, more Michelle Yeoh. I won’t say no to that. [Big Grin]

Well, that explained the bit in E03.

Honestly, though, as much as I hate the whole Section 31 thing, it would be a good fit for her. I want recurring baddie Georgiou anyway, but I think making her a spook limits the fun & makes her less useable, not more.
