Again, I overall liked this episode, but there's some stuff that doesn't mesh well with what we already know from previous series.

Hugh is the director of the Artifact. Nifty.

So we're getting more odd stuff concerning the Romulans and the Borg. We find that all of the Artifact's "disordered" are Romulan ex-Borg. Hugh says that these were the only Romulans ever assimilated by the Borg. But we've seen at least one other Romulan ex-Borg on Voyager that certainly didn't have these kinds of issues. On top of that, while we never saw it, it was implied the Borg were assimilating Romulan outposts as far back as TNG Season 1.

On top of that, it's heavily implied that assimilating the Romulans is what disabled the Artifact cube in the first place; which is only strengthening my belief that the whole "Romulans are Vulcan Cylons" theory is right.

Commodore Oh is described as Vulcan, so at least that's what the galaxy at large thinks. She might still be Romulan, though. Whether Vulcan or Romulan, her wearing shades seemed weird.

I love the interaction between the cynical Santiago and his upbeat ENH.

Laris and Zhaban continue to be awesome, especially Laris. I'm wondering if her dig at Zhaban being a "northerner" is a Doctor Who reference. ("Lots of planets have a north!") Also, is that meant to explain why some Romulans have foreheads (Zhaban) and some don't (Laris)?

Romulan acid spit again.

Dr. Jurati is so obviously a mole for Commodore Oh.

“Romulans are Vulcan Cylons”

That makes me wonder just who was responsible for Romulus’s destruction. If the Vulcans did it, that would be ironic since a Romulan destroyed Vulcan in an alternate universe...

That supposes that it has a cause other than "star ran out of hydrogen". I know, I've been playing STO for years now, which does have the supernova be artificially triggered. I have to keep telling myself that, while it was the closest thing to an official continuation of the timeline for the longest time, it ultimately is non-canon.

Why does the ENH have a shitty Irish accent?

Yeah, she's a mole. Probably led the team there, & she's the backup if they couldn't kill him.

"Freecloud". Sounds like a data planet. Raffi's probably some kinda biotech junkie now or some such.

The "mystery girl" shit can stop already. We already know what's going on, & it's being done so poorly, so bad.

Three episodes in & this show is already grating on me. Nothing is telling a story, it's just dropping weirdities like X-Files. Also, this future sucks. Everyone's broken or hopeless or twirling their fucking mustaches. The only interesting people are Laris & Zhaban.

There were a couple of things I just found weird in this episode, like the sunglasses, smoking cigars and vaping.

They did a poor job on the new old Starfleet uniforms. Raffi looked like she was going to a Cosplay convention.

40 Eridani A and Beta Antares ship yards are mentioned.

After 3 episodes I think I rather prefer Starfleet-centered Trek shows.

Here’s my theory about the sunglasses (not that I think this is at all what the writers have come up with): between the Countdown comic dealing with the Romulans not wanting to evacuate their slave races from the supernova, the hypothesis that Oh is responsible for the attack on Utopia Planitia, and that she wears anachronistic sunglasses when meeting Jurati, all signs point to her being a Reman in disguise.

Yep, that’s far more likely. Either that, or it was just for some silly effect.

I didn't like Raffi at all... especially when she kept calling Picard "JL".

I don't know if calling it "modernizing" is the right word...presenting 24th century humans like people here in 2020. Things like smoking, even vaping, a sailor style mermaid tat. I think it's the first time we've seen someone wear sunglasses in Star Trek. Which isn't a bad thing, after all why would people stop protecting their eyes from the sun in the future.

But hey, who didn't love hearing Picard say "engage".

Romulans spit acid and still no explanation for that? I thought maybe it was some kind of acid pill they're biting down on maybe.

Why is it when they show Earth there aren't a ton of ships or space stations? It's the capital planet of the Federation and location of Starfleet headquarters, you'd think there'd be a lot of space traffic around Earth.

I bet we'll be seeing someone give the finger before the season ends. [Big Grin]

The only rational explanation for the acidic spit is probably this:

So that in a case of emergency, the Enterprise is the only ship nearby to save the day.

Vulcans have those inner eyelids, remember? They don’t need sunglasses.

I think Oh is half-Vulcan. Maybe she didn't get that part.

^^^ A VERY good point. I’d like to think they didn’t forget about that little detail, and that the sunglasses are significant in some way, but...

Or she’s actually Mirror Georgie-Oh in disguise, back from the 33rd century or whatnot.
