I really enjoyed this episode. It felt very Star Trek.

Disco arrives at the hyperfield. Normal hails are ignored, the DOTs are deployed to spray the biochemical for "peace" on the hyperfield's exterior. The hyperfield reacts by enveloping the DOTs and then Disco herself.

Reno (Who I forgot to mention last week was kidnapped. And yes, "kidnapped" is the right word. [Razz] ) is being her usual awesome self by snarking with Book and Tarka.

One of the 10-C approaches the ship's shuttlebay. They're big, alright, although we never get a clear shot of them. We get some flashing lights as well as some more biochemicals, which eventually are shown to be math equations. Yes, math is the universal language. Disco maths back at the 10-C, and they send a blob which forms a door.

Reno, who has been watching Tarka the whole time, informs book that taking the DMA's power sources will not only implode the hyperfield, but probably still result in Earth's destruction. Book calls Tarka out on it, and Tarka uses his tech to stun Book and throw him in with Reno.

Inside the blob, the first contact team finds a replica of Disco's bridge, and they get another message from the 10-C... They wanna know what was up with the isolytic weapon Book and Tarka blew up the DMA 1.0 with. Yup, that was noticed. The team is about to reply that the DMA is causing them terror when Tarka makes his move and the 10-C break off contact by returning the team to Disco.

Next week will be the season finale. Dare I get my hopes up that this season will be the first to end without pulling something monumentally dumb (such as Starfleet sanctioning the destruction of Qo'noS, time crystals, and the Burn being a forsaken child's scream)?

It was good. But a whole thirteen episodes all about trauma abs loss… it feels too much even after the couple of years we’ve all had. They could have done with cranking it down to ten, which appears to be the standard Trek season load going forward.

I don't like the shortened seasons. Everything too much all at once. There's no breathing space & character development relief.

I agree that this felt very Trek. I really liked the communication puzzle elements. When the lights showed up, I was all "Play the tones!" Other elements that caught me:

• The Ten-C have Russian water tentacle technology!
• Dread Pirate Booker
• Primal scream therapy endures to the 3190s...somehow.
• Ndoye's 1-track mind has gotten so predictable. This time, diplomacy didn't even merit a speed bump.
• Reno seeing Tarka & putting it all together. It would have to be her connecting the two.

And then to have Book go along with it? I sure hope he’s being actively played, because it’s the only explanation for what feels like a complete binning of what the character was all about. Why played? “Aww, you were a slave like me, you’ve lost your family, hey, here’s an idea - why don’t you help me blow some shit up so I can go to Fluffy Bunny Universe on the offchance my boyfriend is there?”

I had this mad idea. I mean, don’t worry, Burnham will save the day, it’s what she’s FOR. But what if Tarka doesn’t have his dial-home device blow up in his face but does get to go to Fluffy Bunny Universe?

Only, he gets it wrong.

He ends up in a universe where Control won, and killed everyone. And then suddenly a dimension-hopping dork arrives to show it that there are actually more worlds to conquer…

OK, it’s basically that “What If?” episode where Ultron won, but I think what this show needs is a decent baddie. Not that Control really fits the bill, but it’s better than that useless Orion woman.

That's both a great idea & an awful one. I would hate to see Control again.

I finally caught up. I’m very relieved that they’re going the long and painstaking route to establish communication with the 10-C. It’s basically Trek’s version of Arrival. (As in slightly dumbed down for general consumption but still fairly well thought out.)

I also made the Dread Pirate Booker connection. 😂

Finally, I’ve never commented how much I hate the name “Species 10-C.” It sounds like a damn Borg designation. By coincidence, after Disco tonight my family watched TNG’s “Tin Man.” Now there’s a good code name. (What does it matter if it’s not 100% accurate when it’s somewhat relevant and evocative?)
