IMHO, another very enjoyable episode. I'll try to recap as best I can, but I'm very stressed out, tired, and under several deadlines, so I can feel parts of this episode leaking out of my head like a strainer already.

No Raffi/Worf this week.

During a flashback, Picard answers questions from Starfleet groupies. Interestingly, Picard has encountered the Hirogen.

The Titan's in pretty bad shape and falling towards the center of the nebula.

Aboard the Shrike, Vadic cuts off her hand, which reforms as a face through which she communicates with her boss. I'm guessing Vadic is working for the changelings in exchange for having body parts restored.

Seven is going changeling hunting. My only issue with this subplot is that I'm pretty sure Odo was the only changeling with a bucket. I recall (perhaps incorrectly) that after meeting his people Odo experimented with not using a container while regenerating to be more like them. While saving the ship, "Sidney" slips up by calling Seven "Commander Hansen", which lets Seven fry the changeling.

Shaw hates Borg because he has survivor's guilt from his experience at Wolf 359. Curiously, Shaw specifically points out that Locutus was the only Borg to have a name.

Beverly figures out the energy pulses are very similar to contractions during labor. They're able to predict when the final and most powerful pulse will occur, and use the pulse to repower the ship and escape the nebula. We get to see the newborn space organisms, which bear a similarity to the Farpoint jellyfish (which got a callback earlier in the episode).

"Did you just throw an asteroid at that ship?" Yeah, payback! [Big Grin]

During another flashback, we see that Jack indeed tracked down his father years ago, but Picard obliviously responds to a question about family by stating that Starfleet is the only family he needs.

The episode ends with Jack having another vision involving the red veins...

Did I forget anything major?

Way better than last episode. At least all the unnecessary conflict between the protagonists is mostly gone. Although after seeing pizza baking happy Riker in Season 1 his reasons for leaving Deanna seem to be yet another retcon.

It was ludicrous that Shaw had to show Seven what a bucket looked like. It was also contrived that the Changeling's bucket almost looked like Odo's bucket (same elongated hourglass ornament).

Too tired to hit MA but I don't think Picard and Jack being Academy mates works out chronologically. Not sure why Picard put Jack Jr.'s age at 23-24. That would put his birth almost immediately after NEM. Long before all that shit happened to Picard which Beverly cited as justification.

No f* clue what is going on with Vadic. Did she get an ounce of a Changeling to replace her hand and can communicate with the rest of the Changeling?

Four episodes to tell like 50 minutes of story. Matalas must've learned writing from George R.R. Martin.

There was no suspense here because we knew they'd get out. It was entirely a waste. What little more we know is in fact nothing. I can't wait for this to be over, honestly.

I am, however, stealing Shaw's line about asshole becoming a substitute for charm, because it's perfectly applicable for me.

I would have liked it if Picard had indicated that some rando having a go at him for Wolf 359, well, to him that's like, a Tuesday. It's probably happened a lot. The killer flashback at the end was a real gut punch, but it'd have been equally compelling if the punchline to all those adoring young officers was yet another embittered W359er in the bar piping up to, yes, have a go at him.

Nice touch remembering to use the PIC s1 uniforms for that scene, though.

Shaw basically sulking in his cabin after being released from sickbay was a bit weird though. I guess he's just not a very good captain...

And as for how he played the scene when LaFauxge appeared in Nacelle Control (I mean, seriously? That's who the Changeling goes with? The ship's conn officer? Of all the people to allegedly pick to send down while they're trying to fly the hell out of there?), that was also a bit weird. I guess he knew exactly who she was as he'd already discussed setting a trap with Seven, but it really looked like he bought who she was (pretending to be) for a minute there.

Another name for a ship at Wolf 359! I wonder how many that is, now? I wonder if we'll ever reach a full canon list of 39 by attrition..? I like they rounded it up to 40 ships though, that feels like the sort of thing that would happen.

So it seems Matalas clarified on Twitter that Vadic and her crew are changelings. Not sure why they would come after Crusher in solid form and let her shoot them. [Roll Eyes]

A subtitle fuck-up seems to have spoiled the identity of the woman talking to Jack at the end.
