I could have sworn I saw a thread about season 3, but I can't find it, so ... here we go.

Orville's back, rebranding as New Horizons for this newest season, currently exclusive to Hulu, although according to Seth M., the entire series is coming to Disney Plus in early August.

With the move to Hulu comes an extended run time. The pacing feels really off on a lot of these episodes, like the writers were used to writing a 41-minute episode and don't quite know how to pull off a 60 minute run time. It feels similar to Longmire when new seasons went from AMC to Netflix, frankly.

There's one new character on the bridge, and I think the engineering set got an upgrade. There's also a new shuttle and some sort of fighter craft; the new shuttle is a tremendous improvement.

The show touches on a number of plot lines from earlier seasons, but it's been so long I completely forgot about Laura, who we meet in a time travel episode. Topa's sex reassignment comes back in a very strong episode, and is followed up on again in the most recent (I expected the ending from the get-go, they telegraphed it pretty far out, but I found myself with a wet face when I finished the episode -- well done).

SDCC was this past weekend, and Penny Johnson was asked, in all of the science fiction show she's done, who was her favorite romantic partner? She confessed it was none other than Avery Brooks, and said that she would lock herself in her trailer when she wasn't on set so that she wouldn't have an affair with him (not certain how clear she was or not).

In the same panel, Seth confirmed the show had not yet been renewed for a future season, and that he had a lot less insight into how the show performed on a streaming platform than he had when it was on network TV.

There's one more episode left and I have to say this season has been amazing. I know there were people that complained about it going to Hulu because they didn't have that streaming service. Honestly, the only reason I have it is because it's included with my cell phone plan...but truth be told, I watch it more than Netflix these days.

This season still has the humor, dialed back from being a Family Guy in space kind of thing, but the story telling is great. With episode lengths over an hour, it feels like a short movie. And the stories are interesting. Better than a lot of Trek I've seen. For example, a character got sent back to the 20-teens, accepted his fate, made a life and family for himself in 'our' time but when his crew traveled back to rescue him they forced him to give it up. In the latest episode, a character sacrificed her life to save a race she hated in order to create peace.

She seems to be consistent on that.

Sadly, I learned today that Lisa Banes, who plays Union Council member Speria Balask, was killed after she was hit by a scooter in Manhattan. She suffered a brain injury and died a few days later. The driver of the scooter fled the scene but was arrested a few months later and is facing multiple charges.

This season was supposed to have 11 episodes, but due to the pandemic, they turned one of them into an audio book narrated by Bruce Boxleitner (who also has a recurring role this season).

Here's the synopsis from Wikipedia:

quote:
In 1914 New York City, a woman leaves her baby at the front desk of a hotel and never returns. The staff decide to give the baby to a German couple staying in the hotel, who name the baby Otto and return with him to Germany. As a teenager, Otto begins to sympathize with the Nazi Party and develops a strong disdain for Jews, and joins the Schutzstaffel. Otto later marries and fathers a son. Otto becomes the commander of a concentration camp, where he kills Jewish prisoners to entertain himself. Ed and Kelly arrive at the camp and end the program, revealing Otto’s reality to be a simulation, and take Otto to the Orville and his parents, who reveal his true name to be Adam. Adam’s parents recount that they were energy researchers living and working in an underground laboratory when the Krill attacked their laboratory to steal their research. Adam’s mother hid him in their 1914 simulation before the Krill abducted and imprisoned them, and Adam was left to be raised by the simulator for nearly thirty years. Adam has difficulty adjusting to reality, and the Orville crew unsuccessfully attempt to deprogram him. Adam escapes from his quarters and takes an officer hostage, whom he has take him to the ship’s simulator, where he has the computer create a simulation of his wife and son in a reality where Germany won World War II. Ed and Talla apprehend Adam and arrange for him to be sent to a facility for extensive psychological deprogramming. Decades later, an elderly Adam is working as a baker and runs into Ty Finn, and mentions Ty’s mother helped him during a difficult time.
That's ... uh .... uh .... what

The Orville has moved to Disney+. Hopefully if it gets enough viewers there maybe Hulu will give it another season. It hasn't been canceled or renewed as of yet.

Considering the finale reintroduced a character from a previous episode, Majority Rule, set on a 21st century looking Earth... a Nosedive Black Mirror world... I feel like they were planning on another season with her as a main character for a next season.
