In going over my ship list, I find the names of at least three ships that I am incredolous that Starfleet would use for the naming of its ships. 1. The USS Buran is named after a Russian Space Shuttle. Source: Encyclopedia 2. This marvel of Russian engineering ended up being a restaurant in downtown Moscow. This is like naming a starship after the USS United States. USS United States was to be the protype for a new class of carriers in the 1950's. The furthest the builders got in building this carrier was the keel before budget cuts by Congress ended the project. Note: I would have cited the Hermes as a parallel example to the fate of the Buran. However, the name is already taken. No point in beating a horse twice. For those who don't know, the Hermes was an ESA planned shuttle. 2. The USS Valdemar is named after the inventor of the tape recorder. Source: Encyclopedia 2. How about naming a starship USS Farnsworth? Farnsworth is the inventor of the TV. 3. The USS Prokofiev is named after a ocmposer. Source: Encyclopedia 2. How about the USS Beatles, the USS Gershwin, or the USS Weber? All good choices? NOT!

Buran: in the Star Trek universe the Buran may very well have been a success. Remember that they had interplanetary DY-100 vessels by the mid 1990s.
Valdemar: why not. And it was Logie Baird who invented TV!
Prokofiev: well, USS Mozart has a nice ring to it.
Starfleet has thousands of starhsips, some of them will have slightly odd names. Look at the current USN. Some ships are named after senators who have helped get extra funding for the Navy....

The Hermes was a British carrier wasn't it? If I remember correctly it was sold to the Indian Navy and renamed Viraat??

USS Buran: Why not? It doesn't really matter, if the predecessor was successful. If they would really avoid a name, it would rather be the USS Challenger, because of its bad fate. But that is 350 years ago by the time the ship is commissioned...
USS Valdemar: I like this ship name category, just like the USS Brattain. Farnsworth would be o.k. too.

Actually, yes, Buran was the name of the CCCP shuttle, but, of course, Buran has its own definition. It means snowflake.
The Valdemar may be named after someone else. The Encyclopedia guessed it was for the tape recorder guy, but I have to dig out Encarta, I know I found some other famous Russain who would fit the bill.

Well, Hermes also happened to be the ancient Greek god of a few things, including invention. Seems a good enough thing after which to name a ship...

While searching Microsoft Bookshelf 98, I found a Valdemar I, King of Denmark, AKA Valdemar The Great. He apperantly was a famous king in Denmark's history, living from 1131 - 1182

Why aren't there names in other languages? Except for Akira and Yamato. And, why isn't there country names like the USS Norway or the USS Austria?

What about the USS Budapest or Musashi? The Shiku Maru, Hiroshima, Akagi, Hokkiado, Tsiolkovsky, Budapest, Gandhi, and Sarajevo? Such names are outnumbered, true, but there are more then a few.

All these names for ships contribute to a little theory that i have about members of the federation , i.e. that there are ships that have a majority of crewmembers from a particular planet manning the ships, The Enterprise-D - being the flagship of the federation had quite a number of races, but there are also examples of Vulcan ships, like the Hera and the Intrepid, why not Andorian or Tellarite ships...
Of course the crew might not be totally Tellarite or Andorian, but might have a few Mazzarites, or Bolians...
actually does anyone think that the bolians ARE actual member of the Federation, there is a Bank of Bolias (Honour Among Theives) and the Bolians are in a war with a neighbouring race (Alligence)
but Bolias might be close to DS9 - since we have already seen a great deal of Bolians on DS9...

I always thought their homeworld was called Bolarus. Maybe Bolias is actually another planet, considering the fact that Bolians are frequently seen in Starfleet uniforms, which would be very unusual for a non-Federation race.
