For a while now I've been tinkering with a project that extrapolates a history of the little mentioned DY series of spaceships. I've collaborated with some of the guys over at ASDB and Mr pre-TOS himself (Masao) and now I'd like to show it to you all and see what you think. It's far from complete and has about as many holes as a swiss cheese that has had a rather unfortunate difference of opinion with a fireing squad, but I hope you can over look that for now.

Well, here it is.

DY-100
Circa 1996
Length 106m
Height 30m
Beam 36m

Limited production sleeper ship. Secretly developed in the late 1980’s and early 90’s by Khan Singe's fledgling Yoyodyne Corporation (subsidiary of Chronowerx). It was intended to be used to launch long-term manned missions to Mars and the Jovian system. This would eventually prove to be for naught with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the sudden lack of commercial interest in deep space travel in the early to mid 90’s.
Despite this 18 were produced as a possible competitor to the American Shuttle and the Russian Buran as a satellite delivery and maintenance platform, but because it was designed as a one-use deep space vehicle the design lacked the facility for atmospheric re-entry
3 were sent into deep space at the end of the Eugenics Wars, all were thought to have been destroyed in orbit by nuclear defense platforms. It is latter discovered that one escaped, SS Botany Bay.
Out of the remaining 13, 3 were kept in storage and were later the basis for the up rated DY-200 prototypes. 7 were left in far Luna orbit and were later reactivated to serve the new Luna colony in 2021. The final five went unaccounted for more than 2 centuries until they were discovered being used by The Jupiter Mining Corporation (JMC) as automated intra-system ore freighters in the Alpha Carinae system. The 4 surviving units are now on display in the Starfleet Museum.

Known Ship names

DY 100
NAR 01 - S.S. Botany Bay
NAR 03 - S.S. Ahab
NAR 06 - S.S. Victoria

DY 100-B
NAR 09 - S.S. Sydney
NAR 10 - S.S Melbourne

DY 100-E
NAR 14 - S.S. Loki
NAR 15 - S.S. Thor
NAR 16 - S.S. Woden
NAR 17 - S.S. Tyr
NAR 18 - S.S. Asgard

DY-200
Circa 2021
Length 154.8m
Height 30m
Beam 36m

…3 produced, use for the ISS-Luna run. Prototype was constructed using modular parts of 3 DY-100s. All were thought lost but one was mysteriously found adrift and fully loaded in the ort cloud. Apparently it was set on an unmanned supply run for the Utopia Planitia Base on Mars in 2038, but was struck by a stray asteroid in transit, damaging navigational thrusters and the navigation system causing it to spend the next 257 years in an elliptical orbit of the sun. S.S. Lola is currently on display in the Starfleet Museum.

Known ship names
S.S. Lumbago
S.S. Lament
S.S. Lola

DY-245
Circa 2025
Length 154.8m
Height 31.5m
Beam 36m

20 produced, an up-rated version of the 200 series, equipped with LIDAR and expanded crew capacity, intended for regular manned flights to Mars in competition with ISA’s Aries Program. Budget cuts and an over ambitious plan to take a small fleet of ships complete with prefab buildings and orbital satellites to establish a permanent presence on the 1st mission caused massive delays leading to the Aries III beating them to it.
Later, however, they did become the work horses of the Moon-Mars run delivering regular supplies, vehicles, equipment and mail to the early research bases and later the permanent colonies right up until the early 23rd century.
10 were sold to private companies in the 2160’s to serve as deep space explorers.
Out of the 10 that remained in the Terran system, 5 were lost in the *Martian Triangle, 3 were destroyed by terrorist or pirate attacks, 1 crashed on the surface of Europa during a rescue mission and sank beneath the ice flows. The last surviving unit of the Terran fleet, The S.S. Atredies was officially decommissioned during the opening ceremony of the Starfleet Museum’s Orbital Annex in 2213.

*An area of space between Mars and it’s 2 moons credited for the loss of numerous space vehicles and probes from the late 20th century onwards)

Neat! It's probably the best theory that I've read yet that tries to combine the disparate timelines of "Space Seed," "Future's End," and "One Small Step." I like that reference to Chronowerx...

Are these articles going to be added to the Starfleet Museum? You mention in the article that these ships were on display there.

They aren't in the SFM yet, but maybe one day. Since the SFM is mostly for military designs, we have to work out some UESN/UESPA versions of these ships. We can then logically include the more-extensive civilian backstory.

Thats strange, I was just thinking that the Chronowerx reference was a little too much. I also snucked in a little from "The Ultimate Computer" just for kicks.

As the man said, nothing has been finalised yet but talks are underway. If anyone is interested, some perliminary schematics of these ships are up on display over at the ASDB.

You are what you do [Wink] I guess that makes me "Mr plagerist"...long story.

I like it! An excellent bridge between the present, various episode's past/future conjectures, and regular Star Trek.

Two little nitpicks: ISS! [Mad] It's a personal preference, but I would just assume it not exist in Star Trek at all. Though, with the theme of the article being to reconcile mostly everything, it does fit.

And the Martian Triangle: Neat idea! Would make for a great science fiction book. But as the moons orbit at different speeds and inclinations around Mars, the space between them is in constant flux. Perhaps with a little more explanation, it would plausible.

But definitely an awesome tapestry!

Back a few years ago (1984, if memory serves), I used to have a blueprint sheet depicting the DY 100 through 500. I lost it during one of my transfers while I was still in the Air Force, so I can't tell you much in the way of specifics (or even who produced it). About the only thing I do remember clearly was that it gave the launch date for the DY-100 class as being 1987!

Well I haven't seen the new series yet (it comes out on the 7th over here) but from what I gather the space station is depicted in the opening credits, also a model of it or an early concept of it is displayed in Sisko's office. This does imply that there was a permanent space station in the late 20th - 21st century in trek history, I just used the name ISS because I forget exactly what they're calling it now...plus they'll probably change their minds so any specific name would date rapidly.

This is something I had a little trouble with, I'm aware that some real mars probes (Russian and American) have gone missing or have malfunctioned in this area, added to that the fictional Ares IV disappearance, I felt that mars deserved a mysterious reputation.

So I used the term Martian Triangle as a sort of spacer's nickname, not meant to be an exact area, just a generic zone inside the orbits of the moons, where strange stuff happens. The triangle bit is just to convey all of the myth without explaining it, by associating it to the Bermuda Triangle.
I suppose I could write a separate article that goes into the history and myth but that’s a job for another day.

Just a quick thought that just came to me, perhaps a malfunctioning Preserver’s Obelisk buried in the Cydonian desert caused it all the disappearances….or maybe its more Klingons playing target practice… [Big Grin]

Thats very interesting, has anyone else encountered this chart?
