"Doctor Who" spin-off, take two. This time, it's based around Captain Jack.

It might be interesting. Apparently, it's going to be a not-for-children sort of show. Unfortunately, it won't have any kind of crossovers or anything. The only connection to "Doctor Who" is the fact that Captain Jack is in it.

You can read more here. There's no direct link, so you'll have to scroll down. (Unless you're reading this thread in the far future, and the article has already moved off the page.)

Addendum (with what you might consider spoilers for "Doctor Who" season 2/28) : Speaking of "K-9 and Company", I just noticed on that news page at Outpost Gallifrey (second link above) the description of the third episode of the 2006 season. They're bringing back Sarah Jane Smith and K-9. That, plus the fact that the Cybermen come back in episodes 5-6, makes me think I might like the new season even better than the last...

Since Star Trek has gone off the air, and while I wait patiently for the Region 1 DVDs of DW season 1 to appear (or when it comes on TV, whichever comes first), I've gotten back into Doctor Who myself. Having been a fan when I was younger, not only was I ecstatic that there would be a new series, but I also started buying some older stuff I had never seen before (since I've seen every televised ep + the movie).

TSN, if you haven't already seen them, I recommend getting the "Lost In Time" DVD's of missing episodes from the Hartnell/Troughton years. Especially the episodes about the older Cybermen are very intriguing. They are (were?) presented as quite a different animal than their 80's counterparts.

Also, I got my hands on such goodies as "The Tenth Planet," "The Invasion," and "The Ice Warriors" VHS tapes for only about ten bucks each.
Classic episodes, and the Restoration Team has done some interesting work with linking the lost eps by using the audio tracks mixed with still photos/surviving video. I was very impressed.

R1 DVDs are said to be coming out, in Canada only, this February.

Neener, neener.

So, Captain Jack gets his own show? Interesting. I imagine it will be set after the events in "The Parting of the Ways"...

Presumably, since they say it will spin off from events in "The Christmas Invasion" and the early part of the next season.

That is to say, it will be "after" from Jack's point of view. It's actually set in modern-day Wales.

He's not set to return in Season 2 - only season 3.

Tentatively. If Torchwood is a major success, they'll keep going with that and keep everyone's favorite bisexual space hero on terra firma.

OTOH, they may plan to have Torchwood ONLY to have thirteen episodes and then finish. British TV is finicky that way, and has often ended a series becuase they wanted to do something else rather than continue a successful franchise.

Also, Cap'n Jack actor John Barrowman is a wildly active stage actor, and was simply too heavily booked to take weeks off at a time to film even a single Doctor Who episode for the second season. Yep, unlike Trek's five to seven day schedule, British hour long drama usually takes three to four weeks per episode. Love your unions, boys!

Don't knock it. Just think of Enterprise, and you know tricky's got a point.

The hits keep on coming... Now, they're filming a 15-minute short story of Doctor Who, starring new Doctor David Tennant and Billie Piper as Rose, for next month's "Children In Need" charity special. This won't be the first time BBC has allowed this, filming the comedic "Curse of Fatal Death" and the shameful (and equally non-canon) "Dimensions in Time" for similar good causes. However, this will be the first time we'll see something while Doctor Who was still on the air!

It's unknown if this mini-episode will fit into the established Doctor Who continuity, or be trated as a one-off thing that we should ignore. I hope it's not the latter, as I'd rather be introduced to a new Doctor at his inaugural episode, still scheduled for December. Still, if anyone has proven to script this stuff well, it's the current writer of the show. We'll see...

Would have been nice if they had Christopher Eccleston. Although it might have taken the shine of his exit. Paul McGann appearing... nah - too soon.
