Pioneer One is a new sci-fi series that is produced entirely by funding from the fanbase. It is released through the bit torrent system and is entirely free to download and distribute. Through donations, the first episode has been produced and released and the next 6 are in production.

The plot is that a capsule lands in Edmonton and spreads debris and radiation through Montana and Alberta. In the capsule there's a young boy wearing a USSR space suit. He is full of cancer and has a note with him saying that he comes from Mars...

There's a distinct lack of foulmouthed, bald cropdusters.

Saw it on Youtube. It was okay, the dialogue could be better though. I get a sense this might be an alternate reality/ parallel universe type story.

Well, I'm not sure how much of Mars has been mapped in extensive detail... How plausible would it be to have a manned Soviet mission to Mars in the 70s, with the two cosmonauts ending up marooned and having a kid?

Without extensive terraforming, not very likely. Unless they found some alien oasis on the planet.

You don't need to terraform the whole place just to have a handful of people survive there for a few decades. Just need a way to convert the local ice into breathable air and drinkable water to supply a sealed habitat while keepin the CO2 scrubbers working. Power shouldn't be a problem if they took along a small nuclear reactor, which the Soviets did have as early as the 60s IIRC. The only problem in terms of sustainability is food and medicinal supplies...I suppose a couple of N1 rockets might have enough lifting power to carry enough supplies to last a while. Longer with tight rationing.

As for escaping detection, well they've only recently rediscovered some old robots left behind on the moon that had been lost decades ago, so it's possible.

You could grow food in a greenhouse if you happened to have one.
