Are the big droids in the first pic the same as the fighter in the second pic (which looks like a primitive TIE-Fighter) ???

I believe so, yes. The VFX people must be big Macross fans.

Impressive, most impressive....

Those larger droids DID seem to look like something to me, but I never made the connection to the fighters.

www.sirstevesguide.com (No relation to Sirmaniac, honest) is a site that is scooping the new Hasbro toys for Star Wars I, and he had the toys for these fighters. The Trade Federation droid fighters (for that is what these are) can convert to battle droids.

While it should be fun to see all these Battle Droids, Droid Fighters, Hover Tanks, etc. in the Prequels, it really is confounding to see all this technological complexity in the Prequels and not in the original (chronologically latter) films (1970's movie VFX vs. 1999 VFX notwithstanding, of course). I know there's been talk that all these weapons eventually get banned, and that's why the Empire doesn't possess any of them, but I find it hard to believe that the Empire would honor any such ban and not use the best technology available to them.

Nitpicking aside, I look forward to the visual feast that awaits us.

What technology is in the prequels that isn't in the original movies? These droid things probably just aren't as effective as human-controlled vehicles.

It's the problem that faces every prequel of this nature. How do you make the past look like the past, considering you are filming it in the future? This is why I'm opposed to any sort of Star Trek prequel type show.

It seems Sidious is trying to take over the galaxy with expendable forces. Since it's a safe bet the Clone Wars are part II of his take over attempt (using expendable clone forces to take over the galaxy--a method of operation perhaps), then it stands to reason that attempt number one failed, and it's highly possible that this was due to poor equipment, in other words, unreliable droid warriors.
The Death Star was pretty impressive, but Imperial advisors would probably be unlikely to bring up the construction of another.

Er, the droids etc. are from the Trade Federation. From what I've heard, they're not necessarily obvious bad guys.

How old is the Old Republic? 25 thousand years? At such an age society should become technologically stagnate at some point. And a galaxy being a large place, it not surprising to discover that in some areas some systems would use battle droids, and in others humanoid clone pilots. The core worlds which are no doubt the centers of higher technology and society are going to have state of the art, and rim worlds like Tatooine and probably Bespin aren't going to benefit from garrisons of battle droids for security reasons right away. It's also a matter of choice. World A wants battle droids. World B opts for human soldiers. I mean the Amish and the Amazon indians live in a high tech world, but choose not to use it.
Considering the age of the Old Republic and its technical stage, a mere 20 years is not going to show a large leap of technical advancement. In 25,000 years, what more can you do. Of course there are going to be periods where technology does make huge strides, and then that technology is wiped out and lost, only to be rediscovered by someone else later down the time line.
Personally, I don't think the prequel technology is going to outtech--new tech in the past--the orginal three movies, even though the production will. In the original three we only see a small part of the Empire. With the new three, we'll see another part.

You're correct. There's probably very little technological progress in the SW universe.
