After all, it's been nearly seven years, and I figure that springing it on you guys early would be better than forgetting again. Just remind me to take it down in a week and a half...

*edit* I just realized that some of you folks have no clue. What you're seeing here is a quick adaptation of the first Flare design.

is normal? [Confused]

of course, normal being abject as i play on line on NWN servers pink haired halflings, and regularly play on CS:Source MRB Zombie maps was the feared, hated, loathed Pensive's Wetness (PW) and like Raspberry Jelly on my hotdogs...

I'm for keeping this version- it reflects the dark nature of our posts....mine at least.

Very nice- it's time for a change anyway, and most of us have not seen this version before.

No, but if getting crapped in is your thing, there are websites that cater to such....extremes.
While I dont subscribe to your fetish, I, as an American, will always defend your right to be crapped on.

God, I just sent Charles a message asking if something was wrong with the site... Mybad.

Its the kind of retro I'd go for... not like a certain sci-fi show that was cancelled for low ratings...

It's been a long time but I don't remember it looking this crappy. I do prefer the newer version we use to this one - the use of these shades of blue and gray just CLASH - and the colour of the font doesn't work with them at all... I feels like one of those obnoxious windows colour schemes "neon" or something. It's seriously givving me a headache!

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

It smells like 1998 in here.

I liked this style, but I've come to appreciate the brighter shades of blue that Charles shifted to. I can't remember what the MCARS style looked like. Anyone save a sample of it?

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

It looked like the screens on the E-B and Excelsior and E-A.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Fuuuuck that.
I dig this.
A cool shadowy version....
Would there be a way to have both? Some sort of "View" option?

"I've been around about almost long and I don't recall this at all..."

Before your time. One year, at least.

(If I'm remembering right, the old color scheme was iced in May '01, around when Charles set us up the UBB6 bomb, but it's been a while.)

I really like reading in this old format instead, because white text on a dark background is much easier on the eyes than black text on a bright backdrop. Like balm on my eyes, and I just finished catching up on two whole pages of that smurfy abortion thread, so I'm tired now.

If you don't switch back to this old theme (which I like), the future format should at least use white text on a darker background.

Maybe you are hallucinating, and only thought you read some posted explanation... (me=evil [Big Grin] )

I joined not too long after this scheme went bye-bye. I do rather like it. I love the total eclipse effect that's been missing from the current version of Flare. Like Nim, I also find it a lot easier on the eyes. I echo the question of "viewing options". I like this better, but I respect those who don't, and it would be nice if the option were available. Somehow. Maybe...

I like the newer bluey version better. These colors have, I dunno, too much of a "THIS SI MY SIFI BUAORD! WHO WHERE LIEKS STARTREK!!" flavor, and not so much the restrained and subtler tones I've come to love. And because I went to graphic designer school, my vote counts double, no triple! I'd be curious to see MCARS, but I doubt I'd want to use for more than, say, 20 minutes. Were this look to again become dominant, I too would prefer an option to switch back to the blue.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

I trump you with my decade of Graphic Design credits and dusty diploma!
okay, that's enough- we're starting to sound like that assinine "Yougioh!" cartoon.

Posted by Da_bang80 (Member # 528) on :

Assinine? That cartoon is downright retarded! Who watches a show where people play card games?! Utterly moronic.

As for a custom color palette for flare. I like the idea. but it should be fully customizeable. Then we can compare each others color schemes. Although it would take quite a lot of work.

This design feels closed-in and, I don't know, cavelike, which makes it great for the double top secret moderator forum, but here not so much.

On the topic of, like, selectable layouts, a page I like even though I know nothing about it.

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

Unfortunately, styling a UBB is more than just CSS trickery. In particular, there's HTML changes. The way the current design and this one handle the upper left image, for example, are entirely different and incompatible.

There would be a way to allow you to choose entirely, however for each option, we end up potentially doubling the amount of disk space used, and we're already hitting the limit once a week. (Every time you visit a page, the code checks on disk to see if it already built a copy for somoene, and if so, it sends that to you instead. This saves a lot of processing power. Unfortunately, it eats disk space like candy, especially when we have search engine spiders crawling the foums 24/7. With the potential for each page to have two or more HTML styles, the total amount of space possibly needed would increase each time.)

There'll be more cool stuff down the road as far as styles are concerned depending on what the new codebase ends up looking like...

The MCARS theme is what we had when Flare first opened. I remember it being like that when I first registed 7 years ago...

Which reminds me, when is Flare's anniversary, Charles? Its coming up soon...

Unless, of course, this is the anniversary memorial thingy.

Retro goodness. I remember the MCARS. May 1999 for me, would have been March or April except for the picky mail address rule.

I think I'm the only member left with a color status line from a while back.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Does anyone ever actually go inside the Space Needle restaurant? Too spendy to draw in the tourists, and too gimmicky to be classy.

Or such has been my impression in the past.

One other thing that bugs me about this design, or rather its current implementation, is that there doesn't appear to be a color difference between visited and unvisited links. A minor issue, I am aware.

Well, so much for me watching World Series of Poker now.....

I meant little childrens card games with stupid looking monsters and retarded accessories.

World Series of Poker. Wow. Sounds about as much fun as watching snow fall. And trust you me, that is BORING!

My opinion on games of skill/chance is the same as sports. It's more fun to participate than to watch. And I found playing sports to be boring enough already.

I was living over in Japan when Pokemon was first airing over there. I remember thinking "Wow! This is never going to make it to the States!"

HAH!! [Roll Eyes]

That was just bad, but YuGiOh! just makes me want to take a drill to my head. Okay, Whatshername -- the main chick -- is totally crushing on YuGiOh, but doesn't recognise him as YuGi? Even though they have the same clothes, same features, same hair (save for the former's red sripe), and almost the same name? No wonder YuGiOh doesn't respond to her interest. I would hate to have a girlfriend who was dumber than a glass of water!

That Zeek's, they do good pizza. While in Seattle we toyed with the idea of eating in the Space Needle restaurant but decided not to, not sure why, too much hassle, maybe we weren't hungry, I dunno.

But. . . God, this takes me back! I wish more of the older stuff - Behaviour, SFCR - had been archived. I had a few threads from SFCR saved (and a shitload of the CapComs as well) on a HD that went tits-up.

Posted by Peregrinus (Member # 504) on :

I put off dining at the Space Needle for a loooong time. It's been my experience that touristy places like that... well, you pay for the view/experience, not the food. But is was actually astonishingly good. It's one of my regular Seattle dining spots, now that Boondock's, Umberto's, and the Gravity Bar are gone, and the Soundview Caf has lost everything that made me like it. *sigh* Change can be good, but not always.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

I wondered if the Space Needle had a website, and the answer is yes, but from their title I wonder if they're a little insecure about it.

And, anyway, how much for a nice steak I wonder? Oh, $49.00? I'll be sure to eat there never. (I was also too cheap, on my only visit, to buy one of those gigantic jawbreaker candies that the kids seemed to be all over when I was in seventh grade or whatever.) [Plus I spent the elevator trip examining how far the windows were inset, wondering if, should the floor mysteriously drop away Prince of Persia style, I would be able to get a good grip.] And a billion dollars to eat and then for gourmet coffee there's a Starbucks?

Take that fine dining!

Considering I lived through them all, I'm having a hard time remembering the various guises under which the good ship EnterForum has sailed. This particular one was, what, 1999-2000?

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

This is late 1999-2001. The first blue on white theme was mid-2001, and the current design stems from late 2002.

You can't anymore. At first everyone could. Then you required an admin/mod to do it. Then the option was deleted altogether. The only reason I still have it is because I've never changed my status line. If I ever do, and I see no reason to, I'd lose the color.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

You can still ask an admin to do it for you. (Although, now that I've let that little secret out, the admins will probably decide that it's too much trouble and stop doing it altogether. [Razz] )

Wow. That was interesting... I though hours of staring at unecessarily complicated maps of Byzantine/muslim conflicts had made my eys go funny. (Note to any authors/historical cartographers out there: you cannot fit a century of border changes and occupations on one black and white map, no matter how many different squiggly lines you use).
