Yes, I got an iPhone (4GB). No, I didn't have to pay for it... yay gifts!

But when I tried to unlock it via iTunes, I was going to be subjected to renewing my line to another two year contract and automatically adding on an iPhone data plan.

So now my iPhone is a lovely paperweight since I refuse to restart my two year plan with AT&T.

Here are two videos I've made of me seeing it on the useless 'Activate iPhone' screen.

I love how everyone was hyping the release and now that its out the negativity starts flowing in. I'm glad I didn't waste money on that piece of shit. Mikey just sell it on ebay and let some sucker enjoy his/her new paperweight.

I wanted to get one until I found out I would have to add the $20/mo. data plan which I wouldn't really even be using.

The iPhone reminds me of the PS3 and Christmas. All the build up to that moment, and then it's so "meh".

I'm going to get one of those old style car phones - that were placed on top of large black bricks and only the very wealthy or snobby could buy! [Smile]

Or maybe a rotary telephone!! [Smile]

Well, if it works for EarthLink's dial-up service...

I still have a paperweight that is estimated around $540 with tax in Los Angeles County.

Goes to prove my Law of Inverse Hypability. Loosely, it states that the more something is hyped, the less such hype is deserved; and vice-versa.

Great... not looking forward to Star Trek XI then...

They did say they were trying to compete with Blackberries and the like. I would never get it unless I needed something like this for work (and work would pay for it).

P.S. Internet usage on cell phones is never going to take off with the general public if they keep charging an arm and a leg for it.

General comment: Is anything worse than the Pro and Anti camps on any new thing?

Specific comment: This thread has overlooked the fact that the iPhone appears to be constructed of pure awesome. I can't imagine paying that kind of money for it, partly because I am a simple man of modest means; but it is nothing less than an actual factual PADD. It is Captain Picard's phone. Is it, like, any good as a telephone? Does the touchscreen work well for typing? Man, who cares? It is a shiny trespasser from the future.

Berlinghoff Rasmussen??

Anyone see on youtube those guys busting open a new iphone with a hammer - "just to see what was inside"?

I am gonna use it as the 21st Century Apple Newton. Period.

I'll skin it for the LCARS interface if I have to...

PADD, totally.

I think they're neat. I've had some opportunities to play with them extensively. The browser is pretty decent, and while there are some sacrifices, it's superior in every possible way to the experiences I've had trying to browse with a Palm and my old phone. I totally see where people are coming from with the locked down to AT&T thing. Especially for folks who have contracts with other carriers. My credit is bad enough that I'm hoping I'll qualify for the pre-paid plan, but I still haven't figured out whether I can afford one.

I really wish there was a way you could use it w/out the activiation and maybe skip the phone features, because honestly even as a WiFi-enabled, multi-touch, widescreen video/photo iPod + camera, it's pretty wicked. Plus I mean, shiny!

I could buy a decent new computer with the cost of the iPhone and the required service package. Or a Nintendo Wii and DS, and probably a bunch of games too. I didn't buy the hype of the PS3, and I don't buy the hype of this toy either.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have one -- when it drops to a reasonable price or when work will pay for it. Otherwise it's just a nice concept.

HA! Oh, that was sweet. And the videos justifying it were even funnier. Some people should not be let out in public without supervision.

Haha, I sent mine back. I had that phone for about 6 days and I got sick of it. It took 4 days to activate after all!

So I'm pretty happy with my Helio Ocean. I love the 3G data, plus the keyboard is more accurate than the iPhone... and the Ocean streams the YouTube videos faster.

3G must sure be nice. Edge is OK, and not as bad as I'd heard, but to do any serious surfing you're really going to want that WiFi connection. Where I think the iPhone pretty much wrecks shot is the interface. Tapping, dragging, pinching and spreading, flicking, etc. Very smooth. Very slick. I'm in love with mine. It's very Star Trek.

I had heard horror stories with the activation process, but mine took like 5 min. Lucky maybe, but I was impressed. Curious to see how things will play out in Europe and elsewheres and what new features new versions might hold.

I saw a video today of some crazy man that put an iPhone in a blender. It was rather amusing, especially when the battery exploded. A friend showed it to me and I have no idea where the video was.
