I, too, hate the constant use of sampling. The only sampled song I've EVER heard that was any good was off the "Godzilla" soundtrack.

I HATE hearing a song start up, thinking it's one of my favorites, only to find that it's one of these corrupted mutants.

And it's ALWAYS rap garbage, too. I just last week heard a horrible corruption of "That's Just the Way it is."

"And I never did a crime I didn't have to".. yeah, RIGHT.

You know what's really crappy? That another one bites the dust remake from...er.. who did that again.. Pras..and somebody else.. And what about A+? Yow maaaan!! uh-huh! yeah!

I suppose it depends what genre of music you like. I listen to stuff ranging from typical UK Chart to R&B, A little bit of Jazz, some old-style 80s stuff when I'm feeling drunk, and some nice 90s House.

Ok, this might not have anything to do with this thread, but I'm going to throw it out there anyway. It's a personal annoyance of mine.

I really hate when I hear people complain about how repetitive and insipid songs on the radio are, and then not do anything about it. Good music, like good lovers, is hard to find. You have to expend a little energy. Just sitting there, waiting for the radio to cater to your whims won't help.

Now, there isn't anything wrong with listening to the radio, or even liking Top 40 music, though it pains me to say that. But don't expect to find any creativity there.

I suppose R.E.M. was right. "It's that same, same song, on the radio."

Disclaimer
You should keep in mind that I live in a rather rural area, and the radio selection is extremely limited compared to where many, if not most of you, live. As such I'm probably hypersensitive to the issue.

Well, I don't worry much about this stuff because I listen to classical and musicals, mostly. Most radio stations don't have my music, so I don't listen to them much except the classical stations.

I get classiccal on PBS, the rest here are "Classic Rock" and country. I listen to rock stations most, but it's the same music I've been hearing for the last 25 years.

I barely listen to the radio at all anymore, except when I forget to bring a tape along in my car (no CD playerin Maxine, unfortunately).

You don't hear much Tori on the radio anyway -- at least, not on the nearby stations.

I confess that I've always been up to whatever was currently regarded as mainstream music and I didn't care about it very much, music did not influence my life. But most of it was quite good and authentic in the 80s and early 90s. Nowadays, as soon as I switch on the radio I can't help pushing the tuning buttons all the time. It's even worse when I'm driving, I wish I had three arms like the navigator in TAS. All the cloning, newly mixed up, rap sh*t, schmalz, silly teeny music, I can't bear it anymore. Better hear nothing than such a trash. Hitlists are the ultimate horror, I just can't believe young people feel attracted by such idols without voice, without musical talent, without ideas and with dumb lyrics. It's rather that what makes up the bad quality than the often complained lack of "message" in the songs, I don't need it anyway. Music must give me a good feeling. There has been good music in the 90s, but why do I mainly remember Duran Duran, Eurythmics, U2, Genesis, Queen, ...

I agree with Simon. I listen to modern rock radio stations and, although there is a lot of quality, there is not all that much creativity. Now, that isn't always a bad thing. In fact, two of my favorite songs right now are covers(Cake's I Will Survive and Orgy's Blue Monday). But I try to look for creativity in the lyrics and an ability to do what you try to do well.

Of the bands I regularly listen to(Fastball, Everclear, Oasis, Wallflowers, Semisonic, Marcy Playground, Soul Coughing, Beck, Dave Matthews Band, Offspring, and the Violent Femmes) not many are all that revolutionary, particularly the first six. Soul Coughing is transcendent of all forms of media, so it don't really count, Beck is nicely original, Dave does stuff which isn't done much in this day and age, and the Femmes are... well, they just kick ass.

Now, granted, my perception of all music is a bit warped due to my vast tastes. I own the White Album, organized an Irish folk music concert, and have various pieces by Holst lying about. However, I'm quite comfortable cranking up the Bush(I am looking to get one of those machineheads, I hear they're better than the rest) and nothing is quite as kicking it as some Beastie Boys(come on, can I get some action from the back section?). So, anything I say musically must be taken with the greatest of grains of salts.

Oh, and They Might Be Giants are a wonderful band (not really, but I don't want to upset Simon by leaving them out).

Anyone else noticed almost every single band of today can't sing worth crap, live? Heard the cardigans live yesterday on the radio, it was awful.

I'm the sad bunny that goes into raptures when Peter, Paul and Mary are played on the 'Gold' stations...especially when they are covering Dillon...and lets face it they were doing their stuff before I was born!!!! My dad has a lot to answer for......
