Does anyone else listen to the Mission Log podcast? This week they just posted a great hour-long interview with Mike McMahan, and I have so much more appreciation for Lower Decks than I already did.

I mean, I really enjoyed watching Lower Decks, but now that I see a little of where he’s coming from, it’s clear that he’s one of us. I know that’s a cliché, but he talks about how studios shouldn’t worry about confusing their audience, they should worry about boring their audience—in the streaming era especially, people are actively choosing which shows to watch, so the goal should be to make it more complex and interesting, and also more conducive to rewatching. That’s something that fans have been saying for decades!

Also, he specifically mentioned the writers’ blind spot of not exploring all the different relationships between the four ensigns this season, and they’re addressing that next season—in a very leaning-on-the-fourth-wall way, apparently.

Also, the choice of the Pakleds as the adversary for the finale was very deliberate, and had an allegorical relevance that I hadn’t even considered—despite the fact that they almost explicitly stated it in the episode!

The whole interview was entertaining, insightful, and has some choice not-too-specific hints at what they’re planning for season two.

If he's one of us then I assume he identifies the show as not being Original Universe canon? ;-)

“One of us” as in a fan who appreciates the Star Trek universe and wants to create good, entertaining stories with an attention to detail. Not as in someone who gets their undies in a twist when some specific detail doesn’t precisely match their own rigid, preconceived notions of exactly what is the only acceptable way to make Star Trek. You mean the one with James R. Kirk and lithium crystals?
