... we all know why they're blocked - to dissuade troublemakers. Let's give an example. Got this mail about five minutes ago.

For fucks sake why can't I just use a free fucking e-mail. I mean come on, I have shit loads of ships I've drawn, and the whole free mail thing is bull shit. Why the fuck would you bar me from your forum 'cause I couldn't pay for some dumb ass e-mail adress.

I have withheld his name and email address.

Do I need to say anything more, or has my case been proven?

Actually, I think we should let him in. He sounds like he has a lot to contribute. I mean, his spelling and punctuation are better than some people's here. . . 8)

Let me rephrase (sp?) that: Case proven in this situation, but he has a point though.

Yes, this particular person may have a bit of an attitude problem, but I was stuck w/ a freemail address for quite a while, and I know I wouldn't have been too happy to have been blocked out of here because of it...

Maybe he read Baloo's post on the history of the "F" word?

I can see why you would do such a thing, CC, but you should deal with this on a case-to-case basis. Banning ALL people with a freemail address is unfair to those who have no other choice. It's a stereotype you're giving to them.

Sometimes the easy way isn't always the best.

And my father was less than pleased with all of those thread notification messages he was getting for a while. I agree, case by case is the best way to do it.

------------------
Josh: I think they're getting to know each other a bit too well, if you catch my drift.
Me: Oh, I agree. I think they're spending too much time together, that is of course, if you catch my drift.
Asher: I think he's *ucking her, and he's cheating on his wife, and he's risking his marriage, and if his wife finds out about it she'll leave him and take their son, and his life will be ruined. If you catch my drift...

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Well, honestly, that can be solved by not checking the e-mail notification box when you start a thread. But I still agree, of course...

I'm not attempting to dispute that fact, CC. What I'm trying to say is that discluding an individual because they have a freemail address is...well, unfair.

A few ISPs in my area don't even offer a free mail account with their normal service at all, some have a monopoly over the area and so charge extra for email accounts. This can seriously hinder people when, say, trying to post on this forum and have a low income.

Everybody isn't as fortunate as you or me, CC.

I agree that alot of people using freemail accounts can be potential trouble makers, but also I'm sure alot of other people can potentially bring us all a little happiness by displaying their nifty fanfic design(s).

Also, I understand that you're a busy person, and usually you'll just say "aww, forget it, I'll take the easy way this time.", however you probably shouldn't do this too often. Especially in situations like this.

Let the individual forum moderators mop things up, that's what they're there for.

Yes, I know of a few local ISPs that don't give free email accounts -- or any at all. They're just free ones, but just because someone can't pay for their limited Internet time doesn't mean they should be automatically said to, "Sorry; can't come here."

There are lots of places that you can get an email account from for only a few dollars a month. Like, say, DGNE.

Ok, I'll say it again, for the last time in this thread.

If the person gives me a valid, believeable excuse, I ALWAYS, without exception, will allow them to register! I realize that not everyone has an account with their ISP, that is why I make this exception.

Just because someone has a free email account automatically makes them a potential toublemaker? What makes the difference that a person with an email program like Eudora is more likely to behave themselves than someone with Yahoo? I don't believe basing a person off their email account is fair, especially to those who might not be able to have anything else.
My personal opinion is if you were to lift the ban SolarFlare would get more people who would have much to contribute to fanart and ideas and opinions for the forums. I know a guy who does a lot of great starship CGI artwork who was interested in becoming a member but was upset that he couldn't because he has a free email account. You may feel that this rule will keep a lot of troublemakers out, which I'm sure it does, but it also keeps out a lot of good people. Either way you'll troublemakers with or without the free email rule.

Actually the free-email ban is meant to keep troublemakers from constantly coming back by registering with a new address each time.

I am gonna weigh in.
I use a free email address on this site.
Am glad that cc did allow me to access with a free email cause my account email never works
My point is consider each case.

Not all may be bad.
And besides, isn't this place expanding??
New members should be welcome.

I am considering removing the freemail restriction for a short period of time (during a planned advertising period coming up)...

Monkeyboy, we knew you were a troublemaker.

CC, what would removing it temporarily do? Does this ban cause epople to not be able to register/post or read the forums and not register/post?

There are two incidents in question in which prompted CC to add this restriction in which I totally agree with. I will not quote the first. The second was when several posters came in with e-mail addys from anti-social.com, which is a very racist site. They came in, insulting the forum folk, and I bet that CC had a bit of a difficult time getting rid of them.

To make a long story short, a troublemaker can get in with a freemail account, cause trouble, get booted, then get a new freemail account, and come back to harass us again. Sure, we can IP ban them, but there are some people who can get around an IP ban to harrass us again.

May I make a suggestion to CC though? Are the Reply to Thread notifications sent to the Primary mail? Perhaps it could be modified so that it could be sent to the Secondary Addy (which would be your hotmail, yahoo, etc).

Actually, I don't think the people at anti-social.com are racist. It just seems that they like to talk as offensively as possible.

I haven't had the time in the previous 6 months that I have now, hence my low number of posts.

I visited Anti-social.com, a very...intruiging site. Not to mention SLOW!

Heres a funny little story that really has nothing to do with free email, but an old HS friend of mine asked me to send him all the porn he had downloaded onto my computer when we shared an apartment.. Well needless to say I found it and discovered it taking up quite a bit of room, so I sent it all to him, unzipped, in about nine seperate emails... He has a WebTV account BTW... Anyway I get the last six back saying his account had overloaded... So anyway I have not heard from him in over a month now... I ought to call him and tell him why his WebTV thing isn't working anymore, but I'm just too damn lazy...

Moral of the story: Don't be a lazy bum, by a real computer and download the damn porn yourself. *lol*
