Okay, I don't know if this is happening to anyone else, but it's been happening a lot to me. I click on a forum link from the main page, and view the new threads. I click on a thread, read it, then go back. The forum page has reverted to how it was hours or a day or so ago! It's rather annoying.

Posted by MIB (Member # 426) on :

The exact same thing has been happening to me. It is rather irritating.

is it a cache problem? it ain't happening to me..

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

If seen that a couple of times. A similar problem I've seen more often is that I'll reply to a thread, click back to it, and it will look like it did the last time I viewed it (like, the previous day, or whenever).

First things first.

Click the "my profile" link above... the top link on the right of the body on the page will be something like "Clear cookies"

Use it.

You'll need to log in after that.

That SHOULD help the post indicator problem.

In the future, use the links on the page, not your back button... that will also avoid the problem.

As for the caching issue, make sure your browser is set to check the doucment on the server EVERY TIME, not automatically.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Yeah, but using links means you're essentially loading the page again, while using the back button means you go to a page you've already loaded and shouldn't need to load again. This is especially important if you don't have some whizz-bang cable modem setup but are actually required to dial-in to some crummy ISP that maybe'll give you 45333 on a 56K connection.

On the other hand, my browser was set to "automatic," and I'm trying out "every time you start IE" so I'll see how that goes.

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

60% of all hits to Flare are caught by the board cache... cached pages are served up in a compressed format, about a third the normal size.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

I don't like using the links. The back button is much more convenient. And I never said that I really cared about the "problem". Only that it exists.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Strangely enough, some Forums seem to be affected more than others. Naturally, a Forum with loads of newly-posted-to threads will display the problem, meaning I have to update before I read each one. A Forum with just one new thread will be fine. . . B(

Didn't we have this 'problem' a while ago, too?

45333 on a 56k connection? How often do you get that? I've had it a few times, but mostly I'm on 42666 or less Any methods to improve the speed of your modem - especially when downloading files. I've go "GoZilla" but so far it just really pisses me off.

Malnurtured Snay - If my memory is any good (not usually ), yes we have had this problem before . . . when? . . . ya got me!

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

That's with the Surftime connection to Demon. With the pay number I've actually gotten 50266. May be switching to NTLWorld broadband cable soon though. . .

Posted by Mr. Christopher (Member # 71) on :

I have a 56K modem and I usually get around 24000 to 26400, if I'm lucky. It's annoying.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

That's really poor. You should be getting at least 30,000 (I've never gone as high as Lee. I sometimes get 4.3 k/s on a download if I'm really lucky, but not often).

I'd check with your phone company, and make sure your line isn't being split between two people.

akb: You're not really going to get any faster. No 56k modem has ever gotten up to 50,000 (unless everyone in the US is horrible killed, or something).

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Liam: if you're still dialling in to Demon, and have a V90 modem, try the pay number 0 845 2120666. That's the good one.

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

Or, get a cable modem. A bit more expensive, but well worth it. Especially if you're addicted to a certain Counter-Strike game. Er ... unlike me, of course. No, I'm not addicted. Honest.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

No. A lot more expensive. Broadband is about 30 a month at least over here still. Even if it is blindingly fast.

Lee: It may be faster, but the one I'm using is free. I'm not so bothered about speed that I'm going to pay for the phone line for a 20% increase in speed. I can cope.

I don't know if this is related or not to the bug, but the forums don't seem to be saving my cookies at all anymore. I checked through Internet Options, and they are enabled, so I have no clue...

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

Click on "my profile", then on the "Clear Cookies" link.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

I did that and I did it manually. Still nothing. It's getting rather annoying...

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

What are the exact symptoms?

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

Fever, lack of appetite, sweaty palms.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

AHA! I think I fixed it...

For some reason my computer thought it was November 26th, 2003...

Everything seems to be working now

Holy crap! It's a new strain of the Y2K bug! Everyone, run for hills! Technology is killing us! Follow me, everyone! Follow me to freedom!

I'm sorry about Smokey

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Well, usually when I click on the clock on Windows and click on another day, then click back (usually just to quickly check something), and hit OK, it goes to the wrong date, usually off by like 2 days or so. Of course, it's never gone off by 2 YEARS...

Who's Smokey? A deer?

She looked like a cute ball of fur ...

Matt: If you're ever looking at the calendar/clock settings, and you don't want to change them, don't hit "OK" or "Apply". Just hit "Cancel".

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Aw. That's a shame, but 15 years is a good innings.

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

15 years is pretty damn good for a cat! Our first cat - Scrabble - lasted that long. Sorry for your loss Siegfried, being a cat lover I know what this loss feels like. Trust me though, you'll soon have another cat (or kitten rather) in the house, climbing the curtains - ripping them to shreds, peeing in the corner of the carped, being sick after eating grass, occupying your lap until your legs go dead . . . ah . . . and always being there when you need a friend. Ya gotta love them!

Regarding my original post: I did what CC suggested, and the problem seems to have manifested itself again.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

Jeff, Vogon Poet, akb1979: Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, Smokey lived a long, good life. According to the vet, she was about 75 to 80 years old in human years. I think she could have lived a few more years if her health had been better (even with her being blind and arthritic). It's going to take me a while to get over her.

... let's try and keep it on topic.

Fabrux: Do it again...

This is weird... when I try to open the Freedom and Niagara .. thread, it loads nothing.. a completely white, empty browser.
Here's a screenshot

I've tried is several times..

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Me too. Someone seems to be able to open it, because it's had at least one reply. . .

Posted by Grokca (Member # 722) on :

I couldn't open it either.

Fixed.

Heres a good one.

In 'The Never Ending Story' i noticed i needed to remove my sig from my posts. I edited the post on page 5, and its supposed to drop you right back there when its done with the edit. It put me on page 4 instead. I edited my post on page 4, and it put me on page 3 when it returned. etc, etc..

Ugh. Okay....

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

This may not be a bug, I'm not sure what it is, apart from plain weird. All of a sudden, every thread and page, regardless of whether I've opened it or not, is showing as having been visited. I haven't been able to tell yet whether this affects any other web sites. . . anyone ever encountered anything like that?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Yeah, I'm getting that, too. It's also happening w/ profile links (in the "Recent Visitors" boxes) and just normal links people post. For example, Lee, your signature link looks visited even though I haven't been to your page in a long time.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Same here.

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

Oops!

The CSS accidentally was deleted yesterday... the perils of running a beta board.

It will be restored shortly...

Done. [Smile]

Nice new font for thread title!

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

... .it's the same font...

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

Er. Well, it's not bolded or whatever.

Posted by Grokca (Member # 722) on :

I thought it looked different too.

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

Actually, you're right, it is lighter.

Wonder what causes that...

Something weird has happened on my end, too. The links text has changed font, and the links are no longer underlined (I have this option disabled in IE, but you set up the board to underline links). Also, the CSS doesn't seem to be working because the links don't change colour when I do a mouseover like they usually do...

Well, I don't know if that's a bug but it is annoying that I always have to klick on the "Update Post Indicators"-link two times to make the indicators go away.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Well, if you click twice, of course they'll go away. When you click once, you see icons by the Forums that have new posts since the last time you updated. When you click again, you see the same thing. Except that, on the second click, the last update was onlya second ago, so no-one's posted since then.
