Hey there folks,

As a few of you may know, I recently left my job, which has left me on a budget. Flare costs around $800 a year to host... and well, I'd appreciate it if you guys could help offset that cost. The goal is to earn around half of that, but perhaps that's a bit lofty. Feel free to prove me wrong.

I've added a Paypal button to the bottom of the page, which you guys should feel free to use.

If you don't trust Paypal, and would like to donate using some other method, send me a private message and we'll talk.

BTW... it's either ask for donations or add ads. Don't make me. [Wink]

Hey, what is the going rate? I'd have to pay a bit more - what with the Australian dollar and all, but happy to do so! (As long as you bastards keep posting here!) [Smile]

I just donated to Blogtimore -- if you can wait for my next payday, I'll send you some moolah.

I gotta set up a new Paypal account (I switched providers so many times I forgot whay I'd originally signed up as!).

If I make a good donation, can the boards go back to black?

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

Andrew: $20 USD is a nice round number, but more is always welcome.

Snay: Thanks.

Jason: There's a new design coming up sooner or later, which is a bit darker. We probably won't be going back to white on black any time soon... at least not the entire board.

I'd love to donate some cash. But I'm flat broke, and any money I do have is put away in a savings account. I'd really hate to see this place shut down, so once I get some cash flow I'd be happy to send a 50 your way.

Oooo, a contest.

The one who contributes the most gets to moderate the Enterprise forum.

I'll try to put in something if I can - getting married later in the year so most of my money is being stashed for that, but I'll see what I can do. Do I have to use paypal, or is there a g-string I can fold some notes into? [Wink]

And how is that a prize? [Smile]

I'm donating Andrew's soul, Jay's shaved off hair, Shik's newly re-aquired freedom, Omega's faith, 20 excess pounds from wherever you'd like on Tim, all of Snay's black legos, whatever little faith in humanity Sol has left, and Liam's hairgel.

Can I donate my Crohn's? I don't have much else right now. I've actually got a note from all my doctors essentially saying I'm not even to THINK about finding work for about a year. The state of Washington is presently paying me $339 per month to live on... Thank God I'm not eating and staying with my parents. Otherwise, I'd be living on the street or dead. And Social Security turned me down for Disablity. 'Scuse me? I spent six weeks in hospital, came damn close to dying twice, came out of it eating through a vein and 65 pounds underweight, half-blind, and prohibited from working for at least a year. Do I have to saw of a fracking limb or something? Sheesh...

So. Yeah. Be glad to contribute when I can. Until then, a dollar from each member would be more than enough. Too bad we'll probably never scare all of them out of the Land of Lurk...

Just say you did it all while fighting the war against terror! [Smile]

And HEY! Hands off my soul, you can have David Soul, though! [Wink]

I remember those days... Back during that dark time when Flare had banner ads...

I'd like to contribute but I'm presently broke and owe a large sum of money to a bunch of people, so I won't be able to donate for a while yet.

I'm sure I can spare a pony come pay day.

$20 is about what I spend on lunch at the mall food court each week. I can spare that for a week...

Flare never had banner ads, unless I am missing something. Like time.

I'll send something when I get back from Edinburgh. How can I not pay back the place that intoduced me to the delights of calling Tim "fat"?

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

There was indeed a short period of time when Flare had banner ads. It was back when Elim Garak (among others) was a regular poster, which was many moons ago...

I donated $25. Do I get my name above the title now? ("Masao's Sci-Fi Forums" perhaps)

Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :

Thank you for the donations so far, everyone.

In addition to all of the above, if anyone donates and doesn't yet have the needed 250 posts to change their own status lines, they can now also request a status change from me. [Smile]

"There was indeed a short period of time when Flare had banner ads."

It's entirely possible that Simon simply doesn't remember the period in question. However, what I thought he meant, and what I thought was true as well, was that the ads predated Flare. That they were back in the days of Solarflare, or perhaps even SFCR. But I could be wrong about any of the above. I am constantly amazed by how long ago all that was.

I'll donate in a bit, once I get the kid off to bed and he stops asking to use the computer for games. But, can we get a neat tally going next to the button so we have a clue how close we are to the goal?

I'm going to host some of Shik's pictures for money....

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

I no longer know where is what.

Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :

Please, no ads....

Over there, in that corner is what, where is usually drunk and wearing the chandlier.

Donation made, Charles! I'll moderate the new Battlestar Galactica forum whenever you get around to creatin' it, thanks! :0

Not worthwhile ones, anyway.

Charles -

So how are we doing? I finally got up of my lazy rear and got my credit card going.

I haven't done anything yet - I've seen the pay-pal account symbol though. What are the fees involved with paypal?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Nothing, if you're sending to the same currency. Otherwise they convert it at a bit below the normal rate of interest.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I have sent money, as I have a sort-of-date tomorrow and am in an extremely good mood.

I am wondering also.

I haven't previewed a post in a long time, didn't realize it was a pop up, which kept getting killed....
