I really like this design, they decided not to go with the UBER-streamlined and teardrop-shaped, sculpted style of the Kelvinverse movies, and instead obviously hearkened back to the alternative prototype Enterprise design that never was, yet it seems they mixed some D7 flavor on those pylons. Anyone else feel this? Obviously it's inspired my McQuarrie's unused Galaxy class design, but I still feel some Klingon in there.

Also, nice with three nacelle cowls for each nacelle.

All in all, I feel this is a very restrained and tasteful new ship to lead the new series, well done.

Yes this video has been out for some time in States. It's interesting you like the design, a lot of fans seemed to vehemently hate it. I like it, but it could use some more work.

Yes, I saw the video date was from the early summer but I saw surprisingly little presence of the ship name on Flare, so I felt I wanted to discuss it directly.

I am sure the final version in the pilot will have much more polish, small boxes and circuits on the outside, and better lighting and shadows. I am sure they want to throw everything but the kitchen sink into the pilot to hook as many as they can. If they have any self-preservation they will make the saucer slightly larger, and never show it in aft-view, or it will look like a pregnant swan.

The ventral view was surprisingly flattering, to my surprise. Made me think of the D7, as I said.

From Digitaltrends:

quote:
The series is reportedly budgeted at $6 million to $7 million per episode, which puts it on the same level as HBO’s Game of Thrones and well above most other well-established shows on broadcast television.
Whole article, posted yesterday. Apparently May is the new launch.

Also:

quote:
According to Fuller (via Collider), the first season of Star Trek: Discovery will unfold over 13 episodes, telling one complete story over the course of the season instead of a new, self-contained story each episode.

The structure lends itself to the increasingly popular binge-watching habits of the modern television audience, which makes sense given that the series will air on Netflix and the network’s own streaming, on-demand video service.

quote:
According to Fuller, the series isn’t likely to go beyond 13 episodes per season, and he’d actually like to see fewer episodes in a single season going forward.

“I would strongly recommend that we never do 26 episodes,” he told Ain’t It Cool News in August. “I think it would fatigue the show. Ideally, I would like to do 10 episodes. I think that’s a tighter story.”

I am agreeing so much with this. I loved watching "Luther" from the UK, and they had 4 episodes per season (full-hour episodes, though, not 42 minutes, like Trek used to hold to).

I hope very much they add a lot of appeal to that story structure and episode scheme -- it's a proven formula so, all said, they should be hard pressed to actually screw it up. people WANT them to do this show.

on the ship itself, it seems pretty cool. i'm developing nostalgia for the days when the NX-01 dropped and everyone immediately panned the design influences -- Enterprise failed to perform as a series, but the ship was workable and didn't bother me too much as one of the series' biggest problems. the "Columbia class upgrade" plan would have been an exciting point in the series and kind of explained a lot of the fans' design concerns about the vessel being too sleek.

I love McQuarrie's work and deriving this ship from it seems like a smart idea. make a wierd ship, really, who cares at this point. They've had all that unused stuff kicking around in Star Trek's basement forever, I have no qualms about them doing anachronistic or offbeat as a design motif

Yes! Funny enough, the Discovery would be much more powerful and fast than the NX-01, judging by how much ass the Defiant kicked in that Mirrorverse episode in ST:E, so I really hope they stick to those cool phaser sound effects they used in ST:E, which were of course borrowed from TOS, but juiced up just a tad.
