Just watched the season 1 finale.
Ever since the pilot, I was surprised that the show wasn't discussed here. Then I thought about that corny but (by Richard Harris) masterfully delivered line in Gladiator, about hope.
quote:
There was once a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish... it was so fragile. And I fear that it will not survive the winter.
So now I thought maybe people here were superstitious, not wanting to pick it apart when it started seriously picking up steam, for fear of kismet (or hare-brained TV executives) killing it off immediately on a whim, as with Firefly? Never mind that they renewed it for a second season right after the pilot, it could still have died maybe. I think it's secured a nice audience now though.

Harris hinted at it in Gladiator, and it's been made a recurring theme in GoT: "Winter is coming".

I think with the rash of promising shows being cancelled these last few years a lot of 'genre' fans are getting a little war weary. Like veterans who don't want to really get to know the new rookie replacements because they hate to see them get killed.

In this case though, since it's an HBO show I think it's fairly safe. There's what? Four of five books out? I don't knows if the books are done with the story but assuming they are and that they're comparable in length, that equates to a four to five season run of 10 episodes a piece. A nice tidy number that's long enough to go for a while but not for so long that it outstays it's welcome.

I've been watching. I didn't think it was gonna get cancelled, though I think HBO took a big gamble renewing it after one episode. I don't know if the series is based on the one book (A Game of Thrones) or the whole series, and just took the name of the 1st book. I wonder if the books are as raunchy as the series, or are TPTB just taking advantage of the fact their on HBO.

^From what I remember it's a bit of both. I think they exaggerated the T'n'A appeal in the first few episodes (probably to hold viewers attention while the tedious business of exposition needed laying down) but the later episodes were more in line with the tone of the books.

And yes, I'm pretty sure the first 10 episodes are pretty much the entirety of the first book.
