OK... here's a question for everyone who's ever watched King of the Rocket Men!, The Rocketeer or even The Adventures of Captain Proton
How come noone using a rocket pack ever barbecues his own legs upon take-off?

Forcefields. The same ones that redirect impulse exhaust on starships for turning.

So you're saying that in the comic-book world of the 1930s, they were able to make forcefield generators smaller than 24th century Starfleet technology?
