Random notes: The Aerfen, along with Capt. Hunter, is mentioned again in McIntyre's "Enterprise: the First Adventure". Did McIntyre write "The Entropy Effect"?

Duane's "The Wounded Sky" has a lot of peculiarities - why is there a Constitution class of heavy cruisers if there is also a light cruiser named Constitution, for example? She also redefines the Defender class ships as "destroyers" in "My Enemy, My Ally".

Yes, she did.

I think this destroyer-classification is very unsuitable. IMO a destroyer should be smaller than a HC.

as i recall, it's because some unscrupulous person 'harvested' or tried to harvest, everybody's email addresses a while back.

Ultra: I give it all I can. Usually, I assume a Federation ship is Starfleet unless its designated as something else, in which case I try to note it, whether it's "private," Corporate, or some other entity (For instance, the Colony and City ships in "The Great Starship Race" and the numerous vessels in "New Earth: Wagon Train to the Stars."

I can only post the info the books give me. If it just says "freighter," that's all I can put. I have no idea whether it's a Starfleet freighter, a corporate, private, or planetary freighter, or what. Sorry.

It IS VERY pleasing to know that at least you folks appreciate what I'm doing here, though. Thanks.

I tell you what, though. Even reading these things by just scanning for the names in italics is SO time-consuming, I'm so far behind in my regular reading, I may NEVER catch up! Sheesh!

I am currently off the numbered paperbacks, (just finished my notes for New Earth: Challenger) and into the first of the regular TOS paper and hardback novels. Once that's through, I'll move on to Numbered Next Gen, and so on. IF people remember to keep cheering me on.

Carey used to assign oddball registries to many of her ships: MKC for the Star Empire and, yes, NEE for the Bill of Rights. She's gone soft lately, though - in the "New Earth" books, her cutters and tenders get the same NCC as her starships.

USS Bill of Rights sounds a bit awkward. Is there a vessel of that name in USN service? Was there ever? Then again, if a USN ship can be named USS Lewis and Clark, or USS The Sullivans, I guess USS Bill of Rights is okay as well...

Which reminds me... Should "The Wounded Sky" list starships Lewis and Clark, or the single starship Lewis-and-Clark? It would be something of a coincidence for the two ships to be present simultaneously, now wouldn't it? Unless it's an early multi-vector-attack prototype!

The Bill Of Rights is an important historical document. I wouldn't be surprised if a ship was named for it. I know I used the name myself along with Magna Carta, Ten Commandments, Koran, & Declaration Of Independence. I should probably add Fundamental Declaration & Articles Of Confederation as well, although they sound a little more goofy.

Book #17 (on the first page), how the hell can the Magellan be in the Andromeda Galaxy? Can someone please explain that to me!?!

By the way, now you've done TOS books, how about those from the other series? [Big Grin]

Well, since you thought was an important enough question to revive the thread for, it would be a pity if you didn't get an answer. [Wink]

IIRC the author had postulated a type of ship called (ironically, in more ways than one) the Galaxy class which were extragalactic explorers and were deployed to Andromeda. I can't recall if there was any explanation of the advancements that made such a feat possible, or if it was just a throwaway ("oooooh") concept.

Perhaps someone can elaborate further if there was any additonal information.

This was before the TNG concepts of quadrants, more standardized speeds and "we only explored 4% of the galaxy in TOS" became prevalent. I'm sure older fans that thought of it probably figured Starfllet had explored enough of tha galaxy to figure a trip to Andromeda would be a cool (or practical) thing to do. Heck, even Franz Joseph posited that the Federation "treaty zone" was well over 10 of the galactic mass, no?

Yippee, old thread! Never too late to learn something new. [Smile]

My copy of Best Destiny has a dedication to "the young men and women in the Vision Quest program, and to the crews of the Schooners New Way and Bill of Rights, who prove that troubled youth can not only be saved...they can save themselves." Presumably the Excelsior in the book is named after the schooner. It ties in with the novel's own theme about Kirk's childhood.

Best Destiny's technobabble sets my teeth on edge even more than the average Voyager episode. But as an exploration of Kirk's character I found it a fascinating read. I never would have compared Kirk to Grant, but once they did it seems perfectly apt.

What references to Starfleet fightercraft do you remember?

There are some in "Captain's Table: War Dragons" and "Dreadnought!", but what else exists? My collection of TOS books is far from complete...

The USS Aerfen, piloted by a Captain Hunter, appears in "The Entropy Effect." All I can remember is that I believe it's painted red, Captain Hunter was a woman, and Sulu was tempted to leave the Enterprise to serve with her.

The various Peregrine Class ships piloted by the Maquis in various books might count.

And then there are the fighters in one of Jackill's books, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

the Aerfen was a larger-crewed vessel, analogous to the perimeter action type ships of Ships of the Star Fleet: Defiant-like: small, fast and well armed, Aerfen was a member of a patrol squadron, and saw action on a fairly regular basis. It might even have a smaller crew than an escort like the Defiant.. it'd be a fascinating picture of 23rd century non-starship Starfleet life to imagine a 10-20 people patrol craft like this..

Gotta get "Entropy Effect", then. The Aerfen sounds like prime material for defining the Agilis class perimeter ship specs. Especially with the alliterated naming schemes of the later PA ships...

Funny that there wouldn't be more stuff on fightercraft there. One would expect the Trek writers of that era to squeeze everything they can out of the Star Wars boom.

Captain Hunter and her squadron were also mentioned in Vonda McIntyre's novel Enterprise. Sulu was supposed to be assigned to Hunter out of the Academy, and that's what he wanted. He was initially really pissed when Kirk pulled rank to get him for the Enterprise instead.

Great Minds do some things Alike, Timo.. I first tried to assign the Aerfen to the Agilis-class about ten years ago in my shiplists.

btw, heres some relevant text from the novel, which i innocently found somewhere. fans of Masao's work take note of the paint scheme comments..

Fascinating stuff!

I don't think "it was a fighter" should be taken too literally here, but should rather be read as "she was a fighting ship"...

And yes, the "small frontal profile" would suggest something similar to the Akyazi design, something flat with a single hull and in-plane nacelles. Yeah, I'm quite sold to this concept. [Cool] A crew of 10-20, you say? Anything more on her? Armament? Speed? Shuttle hangar? Transporters?

A TOS version of the Akyazi might be nice: I already built a DS9 version cruiser of it.THe Odanta is pretty close to that idea but may be a bit large for what you're thinking: it'd have a crew of mabye 100 in the TOS era.
