The Whispers List

Has anyone ever been able to decypher the entire list? If, so, what does it all say and could we possible talk some sense into it?

Well, somebody must have had a better picture at least, in order to decipher that USS Kai Winn and whatnot else - in this view, there is nothing decipherable save for the title (Deep Space 9 Vessel something stardate 475??-475??) and the fact that the first column is a stardate (or arrival to DS9?) while the next apparently is a list of ship names.

On the third column, we probably get the captain's name or the ship's mission or last port of call, and the fourth column might give departure stardate, while the fifth could be the destination.

But why do all the ships begin with USS? (At least it looks like they do, or at the very least they have three-letter callsigns) Would DS9 really get that many Starfleet visitors per day? Or even Federation visitors? Also note that there are no registries listed.

Perhaps the list does not really give the ships that docked at DS9, but is more of a communications log - perhaps these ships contacted DS9 to indicate they are in the region of space under its jurisdiction at the first date, and checked out at the second date. O'Brien would be interested in such comm traffic as much as in physical traffic, since just about *anything* coming from outside the station could have caused the perceived "mass madness" - a broadcasting of secret orders from SF Intelligence or somebody more sinister, or of a telepathic takeover signal, or a spatial wave of madness that might have affected the ships listed as well as DS9.

In a few years, this episode will be on DVD. We should then be able to get a firmer grasp on the knowledge contained in the list.

I have studied this list. There are four columns.
Column One-List of stardates. These are the stardates at which a ship arrived at DS9.
Column Two-List of ships. These are Starfleet and non-Starfleet ships.
Column Three-List of planets and starbases. There are the last stop of the ships from column two.
Column Four-List of captains. These are the names of the captains for each of the ships listed.

I once used a stardate conversion calculator for this list. I found that this list represents two days at the station according to the calculator.

You were able to read some ship names. Do you have any captains?

I didn't pay as much attention to the captain's names as I did to the ships. The names that I did see were the usual 'in-jokes'.

One of the planets I remember is Hispaniola Minor.

So, what ships are known to be on that list? What do we have so far?

Posted by Spike (Member # 322) on :

U.S.S. Aries
U.S.S. Galice
U.S.S. Hispaniola
U.S.S. Yorktown
U.S.S. Yosemite
L.T.A. Elmira
S.S. Oregon
U.S.G.S. Powell
W.E.B. DuBois

I've studied it in closer detail from a capture I made and I'm 'fairly' confident that the eigth ship down is the USS Galaxy. The others are pretty much guess work. Although the sixth one down looks a little bit like 'Essex', or 'Exeter'.

Can you please show us this capture?

The U.S.S. Galaxy is probably the U.S.S. Galice IMO.

Ssomeone, maybe Jonah/Peregrinus, (I can't remember) was able to make out 'U.S.S. Kai Winn' as well. I know this presents a lot of difficulties, but I believe it IS on the list.

L.T.A Elmira
LTA: Lissepian Trade A..? or perhaps the S.S. L.T.A Elmire (who-/what-/wherever LTA Elmira is)

U.S.G.S Powell
Hahaha, very funny. The USGS Powell Award.
USGS actually means United States Geological Survey. So either this institution still exists in the 24th century, or USGS means something else.

W.E.B DuBois
Probably the S.S. W.E.B DuBois, like the NX-01 also without the actual S.S. prefix.

What about the USS Strata, the terraforming ship from "Field of Fire?" Maybe that was USGS.

I believe the screen clearly said USS STRATA, so no mistake in the prefix.

Yep, definately "U.S.S. STRATA":

He's old...ever see a Vulcan that's thirty?
I knew it was "USS" (I wrote it on my post), but I was saying maybe it belonged to the USGS or some scientific organization because it is a geo-terraforming vessel.
It might be Oberth, Nova, or some new class. Same as the Powell.

Here's that capture of the list Spike. No new detail to speak of, but, is it Galaxy or Galice?? It's very difficult to tell...

It loks like 'Galice" to me.
Anyone have Okuda's e-mail adress? No doubt he gets many, but perhaps he has this old display in a drawer or something?...
And, no doubt, the Okuda thing has been discussed...

Looks like Galice to me, too.

Here's what I've been able to decipher so far.

HA! That one underneath the WEB DuBois would be the United Planets cruiser C-57D, under the command of Captain John J. Adams. That, of course, is the ship from "Forbidden Planet" which so heavily influenced Trek. Commander John J. Adams was played by Leslie Nielsen.

One wonders why they weren't coming from Altair IV...

Or have aboard the crew of the Bellerophon...
