Specifically, about Miranda weapons.

The DS9TM says it's got two torp-tubes, but there's more on the model. It has at least four. What does the Starship Spotter say?

Don't have the book at home (I can answer your question in about 10 hours), but weapon counts in the SS aren't very reliable. I found ca. 6 instances where SS has wrong numbers.

From SS:

Weapons:
6 Type VII-12 Twin Mount Phaser Emplacements (6 Banks/2 Each) *wrong as there's one more bank underneath the Impulse Engines*
2 Multi-Directional Pulsephaser Pulse Cannons *wrong as the cannons also face aft, so there are two more*
4 Mk 22 Mod 1 Direct-Fire Photon Torpedo Tubes *correct, for once*

I'm pretty sure that's covered in the "multidirectional" bit.

My question is, is this supposed to be the original factory specs or what Mirandas look like now? We haven't seen those weapons being fired since The Wrath of Khan, but since the features are still there (at least on those Mirandas which have a rollbar) they presumably serve some function. Can a Miranda really serve as a low-rent Defiant these days?

Didn't we see a rear-firing torpedo in TWOK? Where's THAT tube?

Er...on the rollbar in the big torpedo launcher unit?

So then there's four tubes in the pod? Or are they just two tubes capable of firing both fwd and aft?

I think that's the idea. Given the relative size of the Connie's forward launchers, it's generally assumed by many that the Mirandas have four separate launchers and their associated subsystems in that pod.

Then what about the two tubes on the underside?

See this pic:

That's an emplacement nearly identical to the refit-Connie's. That's two MORE tubes. So if there's four in the pod, then the ship actaully has SIX tubes.

That's most certainly not a torpedo system, MMoM. I believe that's the Miranda main navigational deflector and sensor array. It would serve the same purpose on the refit Connies when it saucer separates.

Are you looking at the same thing I'm looking at, Dax?

That thing on the bottom? Glowing red? Exactly like the connecting dorsal torp tubes on the Connie?

Last time I checked, that is *not* what a nav-deflector or a sensor pallate looks like.

The Miranda has its nav-deflector emitters on the top of the saucer towards the rear, right? (Cirled in yellow.) That embankment on the ventral side is a pair of torp tubes. (Circled in red.)

I didn't know the Miranda-Class was hosted by Angel Fire. Most enlightening.

Yep, everything has corporate sponsers now... including starships.

Yes, I'm looking at the same thing you are, MMoM. I just don't agree with you on what it is.

Yeah, 'cuz if the red things at the bottom of the saucer are torpedo launchers, doesn't that mean there's one on the bridge, too?

According to the Fact Files it's a sensor array. Constitution refit has the same dome.

The devices on the bottom of the Miranda and Constitution class are part of the sensor system I believe. Almost all movie-era ships have them. The Connies and Mirandas have a 4-point one, with the forward one being slightly longer then the rest, and the dome in the middle. The Excelsiors have them as well, except theirs are 6-point.

That is most definatly not a torpedo system. The red lights appear on the rest of the points of the lower sensor dome as well. They are exactly that...LIGHTS.

Also, if I remember correctly, the rear facing torpedo launchers in the pod are spaced out wider then the ones in front, which means that you could concievably place 4 tubes in there side by side.

One could actually defend the DS9 TM specs here.

Six twin phaser emitters is more or less right - the two single emitters under the impulse engine are not present in the CGI models, nor in any of the commercially available kits. Nor in any pictures of the original studio model, for that matter, save for that single underbelly shot.

Two torpedo launchers is also right, since the DS9 CGI Mirandas did not have aft tubes. Instead, they had impulse engine glow emanating from where the aft tubes used to be.

And the things MMoMIM (special edition, director's cut) seems to take for torpedo launchers are identical to the Constitution saucer ventral structures, as far as I can tell. It's just that the lights within may be a bit different in the two models - two distinct spotlights for the Reliant, one more diffuse floodlight for the Enterprise.

Certainly these structures would have to fire really tiny torpedoes if they were to be launchers... But we don't really know what the structures are. In "Emissary", phaser fire sprouts from them. In other cases, yellowish light glows there. Yet the structure seems a bit too big for a simple floodlight, and isn't shaped like any other known phaser emitter.

You beat me to the bit about the phaser in Emissary, Timo! ;o) Just wanted to add... Don't believe everything the Fact Files say... they are very simplistic. "This is a window, you can see space from inside the ship through these".

Ah, the Miranda looks so sweet.
