I found this pic on Harrys site:
Model?
Bottom left, is there something connecting two nacelles? Is this a model we havent seen?

The disk just lies on the nacelles IMO. I don't think it's part of the model.

Hmm, I think the left end of the disk is bent a bit downward, almost connecting to the nacelle. And the disk is of a perfect length for the space between the nacelles and of the right colour as well. Well, I just dont know [Confused]

There's another ambiguous shippy-looking thing on the table here.

Harry, link doesnt work. However, found the pic on your site. And I dont see what you mean, is it the "lamp" on the desk to the left?

As to the model, what is it anyway, one of the Nebula variants? The nacelles placement in regards to the saucer looks a bit weird.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I did a quick enhancement of that photo. The disk seems to be definitely laying on top. The little shadow-droppy-down part that you see looks like it's a coloration on the nacelle itself. There is a clear edge to the disk that doesn't connect to the nacelle. It may possibly be a stand that comes with most model kits to mount the model on.

The orientation of the nacelles to the saucer is a bit hinky. My guess is that it's either two different models or the parts simply aren't connected yet. But they are definitely Galaxy class or Nebbie parts.

Posted by Cpt. Kyle Amasov (Member # 742) on :

Could they be part of the Galaxy model in front of Okuda? (you can see a saucer at the lower edge of the picture, next to the nacelles-thing)

Posted by Ferg (Member # 828) on :

The whole thing could be that 4-nacelled Nebula model, with a weird disc thing just sitting on the upper nacelles.

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

It *is* the 4-nacelled Nebbie. You can see the saucer right in front of it! I'm guessing this is the model that was sitting is Sisko's office (and/or Riker's ready room in "Future Imperfect").

Mark

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Yep, that is definatly the Melbourne. The second one, without the damage, so it'd be the one on Riker/Sisko's desk, as Mark said.

As for Harry's picture, I don't see anything on that table that resembles a ship.

Posted by pIn'a' Sov (Member # 293) on :

So, is this the clearest shot we get from the dvd or is there a better view?

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

I can't get Harry's pic. How does one navigate to it?

Mark

here it is... In this candid shot of Okuda on the Paramount lot, i think i can see the registry on one of the Phase two Enterprises in the second window to the left, which should be Rick Sternbach's office according to my map of the stages.

LOL! Are you sure? [Smile]

Back to the model in front of Okuda, I tried drawing the rest of the model to see if it could be possible. And - yes, it is. One thing I don't understand: After 'Future Imperfect', the model was modified to represent the Nebula in Sisko's office. But this is still the four-nacelled version. When did they tape that interview?

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

judging by all TNG shit laying around, during the filming of the TNG. that planet, i believe, never got used in any of the other series. However, the saurian brandy bottle would probably be traced to the construction of the quarks bar set in 93 for DS9. so after the premeire of DS9 but before the Sisko's office appearance of the Melbourne (um.. but there were SEVERAL melbournes, anyway so thats not conclusive....)

Pic No. 13,14 and 15. On the desk behind him is something that looks like the Ent-D secondary hull, but with different nacelles?

Posted by The Defiant (Member # 818) on :

That is defnitely the Melbourne.

Harry, honestly I can't see what your talking about. I may be looking at the wrong place, but I see a Galaxy-ish saucer with two nacceles on the side facing you. Is this what your talking about?

I think I see the object you're talking about, but it doesn't look like a Galaxy sec hull. It does look like it has Sovereign nacelles. For all we know the interview was made sometime during the production of Enterprise in prep for the release of TNG on dvd.

i'm about to quote shatner here....

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Ok...the only thing I see that might possibly be what you're talking about (someone please highlight it or something) is about a quarter of the way in from the left and about a quarter of the way down from the top. It's kind of red and white.

Is that it?

If that's what you're talking about, that's a tackle box with the trays pulled out. Alot of artist types use those kinds of boxes for supplies and stuff.

I just noticed that there is a Lt. Uhura figure in the pic with Okuda and the model of Jupiter. That and some kind of square TNG prop with a label on it.

Do I smell a new type of shuttle? [Big Grin]

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

Nope, looks like a model of the Type 15 shuttle.

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

Actually, it *is* a new find. Some sort of prototype for the Type-6 shuttle, methinks. It's got the hexagonal nacelles, but no overhanging impulse drives on the aft dorsal.

Seeing the pic of Okuda and the planet in it reminded me of my 1990 visit to the TNG art dept. I had the good fortune to have a personal tour of the by Mr. Okuda the week before they started shooting The Best of Both Wrolds: Part 2 (I was on the lot to interview Ronald D. Moore for Starlog's TNG magazine).

A few random observations...

1. The art dept was one big room and an anteroom...no one had a specific office.

2. I noticed the planet, Jupiter, right away as I walked in. I gestured at it and said, "That's cute," and Mike replied, "It's left over from the first movie," so now you know from whence it came (at least according to Mike). I also noticed that it was only painted on one side (the back was white primer), and Mike commented, "They only filmed one side."

3. I knew I was at the Art Dept. door because there was a sign in the window that read "CAUTION: ANTIMATTER HAZARD".

4. In addition to various other greeblies there, Mike had a preserved eteched brass segment from the Epsilon 9 station, which was very cool looking.

5. I didn't get to meet Rick Sterbach per se, although he was there. He had headphones on and was working on the battle bridge console transparencies.

6. Picard's desk computer was in the art dept. for repainting, so I got to play with it. It's mounted on a cheap lazy susan, so instead of the "whish" sound when you turn it, it rattles on bad ball bearings. Rrrrrrr... The paint job was sloppy to the naked eye, but at TV rez you can't see it, so...

7. Mike loaded an animation he had done of a sensor scan for "Tin Man" where the screen shows a cutaway of the titular vessel/life-form. I scored brownie points because I told Mike I knew exactly how he'd done the cutaway (he'd placed the virtual camera so close that parts of the model ended up "behind" the screen, so as it rotated you got this sense of sections being sliced away.

Unfortunately, I was there a week before shooting started, so I wasn't able to get a tour of the set. [Mad]

That's what I remember off hand. It's been like 12 years!

Incidently, you make video games! I realize that's somewhat offtopic, but...you make video games!

When I was younger, when Crossroads of Time came out, I was probably not that far away from illicit relations with the cartridge. Friends and I used to pull all nighters playing that game, as we felt it looked very damn good, and we were playing Sisko. SISKO. ON OUR CONTROL PADS! Incidentally, I did not do terribly well in many of my first year university classes. BUT IT WAS SISKO. Good Show, sir.

As for that shuttle, it looks like one of the studies Rick made in Season 4, before ending up with Type 6. You can see his doodles in "TNG: The Continuing Mission". I didn't realize Rick had actually made a (cardboard?) model of the thing!

And as for the mysterious nacelles... The Melbourne model in "Future Imperfect" is colored much like the paint sheet for the E-D model would suggest: the ramscoops are left red, the warp grilles are blue, etc. So this can't be it.

But when the model reappears in "The Wounded", it's monocolor (looks white on screen) and the mini-nacelles have been covered by some additional parts to make the thing look more like the "full-sized" USS Phoenix. Perhaps this all-silver model seen in these photos is the Melbourne after "Future Imperfect" but before the full conversion to "The Wounded" standard?

And perhaps the bit added onto the mini-nacelles is just an early test of "now what could we do with this one to make it look different?"...

I think the real question here is... Why do Okuda and Sternbach have the same GLASSES!! ;o)

And is that an E-D model infront of the Jupiter model?

Best "stay out sign" ever.

Posted by Aethelwer (Member # 36) on :

I believe the thingie is on the mini-nacelles in the first image because the Melbourne model was pretending to be the Phoenix in the ready room (or somewhere similar) in...uh...the TNG episode with the Phoenix. (Man, I remember when I could remember all the TNG episode titles.)

"The Wounded". Even I remember that one, and it's one of the ones I know I've seen, but that I don't actually remember seeing anymore.

Then again, maybe that's why I remember the name...

when I was fifteen, i once recited all the entire run of episode titles from the original series, animated series and next generation in order, with episode numbers.

apparently my memory was worth a damn back then. but why the hell did i spend my youth memorizing Star Trek episode titles? and how did i forget?

oh well.

yeah, it was 'the wounded' episode 86, fourth season. first appearance of the cardassians, the galor-class warship and the nebula class starship. guest starred marc alaimo as gul macet, before he later went on to play dukat. marco rodriguez played glinn telle, and he previously played captain paul rice in 'the arsenal of freedom'

that was all off the top of my head. i am proud worship me.. worship

That is the problem with them making ANOTHER new series - Enterprise. As I mentioned before it came out... Why not just leave Trek alone for a few years. There are just SO many episodes out there of TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager that I'm sure next to nobody has seen or can remember clearly seeing all the episodes at least ONCE let alone twice.

I'm still to fill in some TOS and TAS gaps.

That doesn't seem to hold water...

"What, another new book? I haven't even begun to get through the stuff at the library. Can't writers just stop writing until I'm done?"

Technically the Nebula-class first appeared in "BoBW II".

Yeah, I do...well, used to. These days I've been making cell phone games.

The DS9 game was always a disappointment to me because the game got so radically changed from what I intended. The Saratoga level is the only one that really reflects the play mechanics I had in mind, and the level as seen was only about half what it was supposed to be. The perks of working on the game were I got the show bible and the first six scripts a month-plus before the first episode aired. When I'd visit Playmates toys (the game's publisher) I got to see all their prototype Trek toys plus actual props they'd borrowed from the show to model. Plus I got Rick Sternback to send me copies of the large plans done for the station and the soundstage plans. Unfortunately, all that stayed with the development house and is lost in Budapest somewhere. *sigh*

This all vaguely relates to the topic in a weird sort of way. I met Mike Okuda when I was on the Paramount lot (hence the earlier details about art dept.). And, because I had Mike's number I was able to call Rick Sternback when I was on the DS9 project and thus was able to beg for the aforementioned reference materials. And, year or so later, it was via Rick that I met Andy Probert. I was working on an underwater sci-fi game and wanted to hire him to design the human made technology...I asked Rick about Andy and he put us in touch. The project never came to fruition, but that's how I got to be pals with Andy.

Then there was the time I talked to Greg Jein and he told me of a very naughty joke he wanted to play in a Trek effects shot...but that's another story...

fuck the nebula in BOBW!

my memory is based on what i could see, and see a nebula i could not...

people who pay more attention to the behind the scenes stuff as opposed to what is actually in front of them deserve to be as confused as they are!
