Okay, we've all seen various starship lists around here, but I don't *think* I've seen any list to include the designers of the ships, or the first and last dates that we've seen them. I would like to try to put together such a list. Now, this wouldn't include every alien-of-the-week ship we've seen, but I would like to have the major ship designs (Klingons, Romulans, etc.), plus shuttles and starbases.

Here's a start, just from memory (correct me if I'm wrong here):
code:
Class: Constitution
Designer(s): Matt Jeffries
Date(s) designed: 1966?
Date 1st seen: 1967
Date last seen: 1969
ST date 1st seen: 2267
ST date last seen: 2269

code:
Class: Galaxy
Designer(s): Andrew Probert
Date(s) designed:
Date 1st seen: 1987
Date last seen:
ST date 1st seen:
ST date last seen:

So, anyone want to help contribute?

Thanks,
B.J.

The dates last seen might be self defeating, though - you never know when the ship will appear again. For example, how would you record the appearance of the E-nil from "Trials and Tribble-ations"?

For most, this won't be a problem, since we're not dealing with the TNG era anymore. I'll probably put a disclaimer saying "current as of XXX", just in case. The NX class would probably be listed as 2004+ or something.

As for the Constitution, that one episode I'm going to treat as a special case, since it really doesn't fit the mold. How about " Last seen 1969/1996* " ? (BTW, I'm going to put the refit in a separate entry.)

If you're talking about the design of the E-nil, then doesn't the appearance (as a model) in Nemesis also count?

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

Here's what I've got so far:
 -

It's far from being complete, especially on the corresponding Trek dates. And there's probably many more classes to include as well.

Harry: No, I wouldn't count that. I would generally stick to the appearance of a full-fledged ship, but that doesn't mean I can't contradict myself later! [Big Grin]

Prometheus was Sternbach. Constellation was both Sternbach and Jein, I think. Intrepid-type and "Iceland"-type were Drexler I believe.

"The Man Trap" was the first aired ep with the Ent-nil which was on Sept 8, 1966 - "The Cage" never aired.

The rest of your dates are weird in a wrong kind of way. "Balance of Terror" - Dec 13, '66; "Space Seed " is right; might want to mention the GALILEO SHUTTLECRAFT seen in "The Galileo Seven" - Jan 5, '67; "Space Seed" - Feb 16, '67; the Klingon D7 actually aired first as a Romulan ship in "The Enterprise Incident" - Sept 27, '68 and later as a Klingon ship in "Day of the Dove" - Nov. 1, '68 (and if I am wrong about that, then "Elaan of Troyius" - Dec. 20, '68); also the K'tinga and D-7 are different models and so the K'tinga ought to be Dec. 7, '79 as in TMP.

The Constellation was first seen in "The Battle" (w/o Nov 16, '87); the BORG CUBE was first seen in "Q Who?" (w/o May 8, '89); the FERENGI POD first seen in "The Price" (w/o Nov. 13, '89), the ROMULAN SCOUT first seen in "The Defector" (w/o Jan. 1, '90); the Nebula, first seen in "The Wounded" (w/o Jan 28, '91); the SOYUZ in "Cause and Effect" (w/o Mar. 23, '92); the SYDNEY in "Relics" (w/o Oct. 12, '92). The last OBERTH was likely the one seen in Generations (or was there one in First Contact?).

Also, the Intrepid-type and "Iceland"-type were also first seen in "The Expanse" as well....

I was wondering about "The Cage". I guess that answers that.

Mind telling me where your dates are from? I don't have my books with me, so I'm gleaning them from gateworld.net right now [edit: I just confimed BoT as 12/15/66 from startrek.com]. (And what does w/o stand for?)

As for the Nebula, I know about "The Wounded", but I can't make up my mind whether to include its prototype seen in BOBW in that listing.

The Constellation-class was designed by Probert and Sternbach - built by Jein.

The Negh'var is also Sternbach, I do believe.

The Oberth was designed by David Carlson built by ILM.

Enterprise-J was Doug Drexler.

Negh'var was Sternbach.

Weren't Norway, St(r)eamrunner, and Saber/Sabre also done by Jaeger?

Well... not entirely true. "The Cage" first aired more than 20 years later, during the 2nd season of TNG (remember that writers' strike?)

Indeed.

Eaves made the Dominion battlecruiser and battleships: I dont know who made the "bug".

I thought Eaves was involved with manking the NX.

Eaves also made the RBOP from Enterprise and (I think) the Ent KBOP Duras died in.

YOu can credit/blame Okuda and Miracki for the BOBW shipbashes.
No idea whi takes the fall for the DS9 kitbashes though. [Big Grin]

I think Jim Martin did the Jemmie Bug and the Defiant and the Bajoran Solar Sailing ship.

Wasn't that mentioned in some article... it was buy a few DS9 Art Dep staffers wasn't it?

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

In another article, didn't Okuda say that the DS9 design was basically a collaborative effort between him, Denise, Rick, Jim, Dan Curry and others?

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

I'm pretty sure that "The Cage" was added to the syndication schedules around the time that the first movie was coming out. (Based on Gene Roddenberry's introduction to it that's available on the old TOS DVDs ((and perhaps the new ones too, but I do not know)), and my own assumption that this was for some broadcast, since the home video market would have been just recently invented. [1976, I think, saw the introduction of Betamax, which as far as I know was the first mass-marketed home video format.])

Though, you know, I might be wrong.

If so, why are all the sketches Sternbachs?

Why don't you just email Rick and ask him. It's easy enough. He usually responds pretty quickly.

I don't know about that. The first time I ever remember seeing "The Cage" was around the time of its VHS release in 1986 (the one with the mixture of color and b&w scenes). I don't remember seeing it in syndication at all when TMP came out. As far as I can recall, the general consensus at the time was that the footage snipped out of the pilot to cut it down for "The Menagerie" was gone for good.

Okay, I've updated the list and uploaded it to html format, exported directly from Excel. I also changed the date format to show the day of the week. This shows that Balance of Terror should be on the 15th since it was a Thursday. (Also interesting to note that while the other series jumped days, TNG always stayed on Monday.)

And of course, you still need to include the T'Plana Hath, D'Vahl and Vahklas 8)

Okay - hey, the Galileo Shuttlecraft was done by Jefferies (which is the correct spelling, btw [Wink] ) and the more detailed K't'inga from TMP was built by Magicom from Jefferies original design.

The Borg Cube - Model design concept by Maurice Hurley, design by Rick Sternbach and was built by Kim Bailey.

The Soyuz modifications were designed by Jein and Okuda.

The Spacedock (not mentioned on your list) was designed by David Carson and Nilo Rodis and built at ILM for STIII.

DS9 was designed by Rick Sternbach and Herman Zimmerman.

Updated with corrections, and added a few more classes. And I decided to split the entries for the Nebula prototype and the finalized version. The in-universe dates for Enterprise are really easy, it's the rest I'm having some difficulty with.

Thanks for the help everyone! Keep it coming!

Do you want to mention the other frequently seen models throughout the series like the Batris and other Talarian ships (by Sternbach), Merchantman (Nilo Rodis), Promellian BC (by Tony Meininger), cryosatellite (SS Birdseye)/Relay Station 47 (by Sternback/Okuda), Miradorn Raider (by Richard Delgado)....etc?

Posted by Futurama Guy (Member # 968) on :

New Orleans by Ed Mirecky in BoBW2

Galileo 5 (from ST5) by Nilo Rodis and Andy Neskoromny.

Type-6 Shuttle (Magellan) by Richard James, Nilo Rodis, Herman Zimmerman, Andy Neskoromny and Rick Sternbach (first seen in "Darmok").

Type-7 Shuttle was by Probert.

Workbee was by Probert.

The Shuttlepod was designed by Sternbach and Richard McKenzie - miniature built by Meininger.

The Executive Shuttle from TUC was made by John Goodman. It was modified by Greg Jein to become the Sydney. The Sydney (upside down) was last seen in "Chrysalis" [DS9].

The Vulcan Shuttle Surak from TMP was designed by Probert.

Runabouts were first seen in Emissary (Pt 1).

Major update, now that I have access to my books at home. Added several more classes and shuttles, and filled in a lot of dates. If you'll notice the ones in red, those I'm really unsure about and need someone to help confirm it.

FG: I suppose that at least some of those will make it into this list, within reason. Hell, what am I talking about - reason went out the window when I started this! Although there are a lot of once-seen designs in here, I don't want to end up listing every alien of the week.

Did Wah Chang also design the Tholian Web Spinner?

And wasn't the T'Pau type ship from Unification Part 2, designed by Sternbach? I have seen his alternate versions - I gather he designed the final version?

And weren't some ships seen in the future equipment of Daniels' - in Season 2?

And Spacedock was last seen in 'Non Sequitur'.

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

Any scenes of Spacedock though would have come from stock footgae. The interior is the Dyson Sphere interior from "Relics" while if there was an exterior shot, it probably came from either ST3 or ST6.

Ahhhh that's right - it was the Dyson Sphere doors they used, wasn't it.

Made another update, mostly adding the final dates for ships seen in VOY "Endgame", and correcting the final ST dates for the Negh'Var and Nova to 2404. Also corrected the Olympic's date to 2400 (2370 plus 30 years, right?).

I would like to fill in the rest of the designers and the final dates (except for the ENT ships, of course). So if anyone knows something that's missing, please let me know.

I thought that 2395 was the agreed upon date...

I think the K'tinga or something representative of it was last seen in that Voyager episode...uhh...off the top of my head -- "Prophecy"???

The Klingon BoP would most likely be last shown in "What You Leave Behind".

The last Oberth was shown in "First Contact" (maybe? was that ever confirmed?), but for sure, last shown in "Generations".

The last Constellation was last shown in "Redemption, Part II".

The last D'deridex would also be "What You Leave Behind".

The Romulan Scout was "The Defector" only

The Ambassador was last shown in the "Emissary" flashback.

I'm curious about the red and blue highlights?

It was 25 years? Where's my Chronology... Yep, you're right!

That's a confusing one. Visually, it's definitely the K'tinga they used in DS9, but it was verbally referred to as a D7.

The Romulan Scout was "The Defector" only
I know they reused and modified the model as another Romulan ship, but I think I'll go with the one appearance of the "true" scout.

I'm curious about the red and blue highlights?
Read the lines above the table!

Fixed with the above additions, plus changed BOBW2 and the Emissary flashback date to 2367 (was 2366).

Wouldn't it be from Season 1 Enterprise?? They used the ship again remember - as they hadn't finished a new 'old' Klingon ship.

Sure? Sure they didn't reuse a shot of it arriving at DS9 (From Emissary) later in the series?

Ah, yes, you are probably right. Nice catch. However, if they were smart, they would insert the ship they actually intended to use (suggesting they ever build it) when they release it (Season 1 - "Unexpected") on DVD.

Actually it was Season 3 - "Unity" and only the Excelsior and Miranda III was shown - no Ambassador (or Nebula, for that matter).

In fact, for future reference, or just for the sake of pure curiousity - here is what was seen in that "flashback":

I think he means because the Warbird would have been sooo much more impressive thgan those ineffectual Valdore-birdies that did squat.

Oy! I know what he meant. [Roll Eyes]

But they needed something smaller and inferior and they is what they made.

A D'deridex is 135% larger (or at least longer) than the Scimitar which would have defeated the whole point of its impressiveness.

The Tpau-type was last seen in "For the Cause" (DS9), though a bit slightly modified.

The Galor was last seen in "The Voyager Conspiracy", I do believe. Also, do you want to mention the Keldon variant and Hideki?

Time to resurrect this thread! Since Enterprise has long since been off the air, it's probably a good time to finish off the rest of this list. I've made a couple of updates since last time, but I'll still need help filling in the blanks and checking for errors.
http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/858/ships.html

I know there's still some sticky areas with some designs. The Constitution, for example. IAMD would be the last time we saw it (I don't count the shot at the end of TATV), and IAMD would also technically be first in the timeline, but not in the main universe and timeline.

Anyway, comments?

Though I suppose that depends on how you look at it.

What about ships from TOS remastered? More specifically the Gorn ship. Also some more ships from TOS could be added to the TOS section like the Fesarius and the Eymorg Ship. But then again you list seems to be limited to the most frequently recurring aliens in Star Trek. Nice job though.

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

Yeah, I gotta draw the line somewhere, but it keeps moving on me! I'm not going to include the remastered dates, only first-run. Besides, the Gorn ship was there in the original. It was only a smudge, but it was there.

Good catch, Rev. I suppose that would go under when we last saw it, but not in the in-universe column.
