Andy's been hired to do art design for Star Trek Online. Here's a sampler of concept artwork for a sci/med area of a Galaxy class starship:

Needs a bit of polish, since he's not as intimately aware of how sets have evolved from his original work. Seems to be maintaining some of Roddenberry's "technology unleashed" doctrine, though.

Yeah, saw this a few days back- great news ...assuming he still takes the great work of Sternback, Okuda and Eaves into account while designing things- otherwise it will look dated back to TNG's first season.

And we really dont want that.

I'm sure his style has evolved somewhat as well. His original sketches were (to me) very much products of the mid-80's. But I have to say.... SWEET!

Indeed. I'll have to virtually shake his hand next time I talk to him. I know he'd been looking to get back into Trek since '88. And I agree with him that the Warbird would have looked awesome in a vertical orientation...

Ahh, so the whole blue area is cetacean ops. Cool!

Other than that, it definitely looks like Andy has kept the whole "laid-back" approach that he started with. Ain't nothing wrong with that, but odds are that his Galaxy involves a lot more coffee and late mornings. [Wink]

Is that supposed to be stellar observatory/cartography thingy from Generations at the top of the screen?

That's my impression.

Wait... are we looking at Deck 7 or Deck 12?

If that whole section of the ship is filled with water, wouldn't it rip the saucer off the hull every time the ship turned?

Posted by Vice-Admiral Michael T. Colorge (Member # 144) on :

I would think the SIF and IDF would take care of that... unless of course we like shaking our dolphin tanks like martinis.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Yah but come on... the power it would take to counteract the inertia of all that mass, both in terms of delta v and and in turning... there'd better be a darn good reason to have it on board.

I think most people tend to ignore just how powerful the IDF/SIF fields are. Most times a ship is hit, by the acceleration and speeds involved, even minor hits should turn crewmen into chunky salsa, as Sternbach and Okuda have said.

Hey, one wonders if you could play cetacean crew members with this MMO, even if only as mini-games or something...

When I visited Andy in December I saw a couple of dozen drawings for this project on his drafting table.

What you guys don't see is the drawings that aren't selected. I know that in some cases Andy drew a number of concepts, some close to what we saw on TNG, and others radically different. The producers at the software company make their selections, and I gather that in some cases they went with stuff that looked like what we saw on TNG. I asked Andy and he said the sickbay beds were one such thing.

One thing I really liked was the continuity in the ceiling lighting in the lobby of the sickbay to that on the bridge.

So, here's a question for y'all. If you were tasking Andy with a section of the ship to design, what would it be?

The loo. Seriously, it's one area that needs attention!

The Arboretum or Main Shuttlebay.

The Captain's Yacht, Calypso.

The main shuttlebay- the specs we've seen leave a lot to be desired.

The Yacht and it's docking bay.

Deck 25... what's there other than the docking port and the torp launcher?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Nothing.
