I'd rather not have to join a messageboard just to view a couple of pictures, thanks.

Cool! But I gotta say, that front section is a lot narrower than I thought it was.

andorian-bottom.jpg. I love it. Tell that bonchune-guy to cheer up, though, step out of the twilight when modeling.
I look at that front view and hear "Greeeenfields are gone now, parched by the sun / goooone from the valleys where rivers used to run"

Very nice model, though. Wish we'd seen andorian ships in TNG.

Nice aft-view as well. Wing pylons remind me of the...Event Horizon.

Oh no...

Spot the variable geometry nacelle pylons.

Just to let everyone know, I am registered at HobbyTalk (I had to so that I could PM Bonchune), so I can always get pics for people too.

Also, I asked Bonchune about the "Starfleet Delta", or "Iceland" as Mark likes to call it. He said he'd work on that next!

I also asked him about the Ent-J from "Azati Prime." However, it was Doug Drexler who worked on that, not him. He did say that it was done quick and dirty, and was not really detailed in any way like a model they would use in multiple shots. I take it he's referring to the underside of the saucer we saw, and not the Calendar pic, which looks nothing like the saucer underside.

Well, the idea around FINALLY getting orthos of the E-J is so we can get an idea of its shape and proportions. How big are the nacelles compared to the saucer? DOES she have a secondary hull? Fandom artists will be filling in the rest. [Smile]

And after the "Iceland", we need to get pics of the D'Kyr! [Wink]

Unfortunately, that would entail contacting Drexler, and although I did that a long time ago (to get the DS9 Tech Manual ship pics), I've long since forgotten his email address.

However, I'm wondering: Is that picture in last year's calendar an actual CGI model, or is it just a matte painting? If so, then the only "CGI" involved for the Ent-J would be that itty-bitty chunk of saucer underside; no top view, no nacelles, no secondary hull. Why create them, if they wouldn't be seen out of that window?

Yeah, I got a bollocking for saying "the name that shall not be mentioned' in the thread about Irishtrek's carrier...

"Wing pylons remind me of the...Event Horizon."

They remind me of Drazi ships (upside down), but maybe that's because I've been rewatching B5 lately...

Delectable.
I haven't seen any eps with this ship, where are the weapon mounts? In its "mouth", in the bow trench?

Well, there was that MSD type display as well, although they could've gone to the trouble of making a complete CGI model because they were expecting the Ent-J to turn up in later episodes.

Rob doesn't say either way if the whole vessel was constructed, but I got the impression from his post that it was a complete model, only not very detailed.

And it keeps coming! Someone asked for a size comparison:

I sure hope some shots of that Romulan ship turn up. I think this is the first time I've ever seen it from that angle. (And it is pretty.)

The Raptor is that big? The D5 is that small?

The Raptor has an easily discernible windshield. Is this feature really as wide as the entire bridge of the NX-01? (Okay, it probably is... Did we see it from the inside?)

The smaller D5 is a bit harder to accept, seeing that it is used as a "cruiser" type and a worthy adversary to the NX-01, in battles where the old BoPs fare markedly worse. (How large would those be?)

Looking forward to the Iceland pics...

Anyone else annoyed that yet again, regardless of the era, alien ships are almost ALWAYS smaller than the hero starship of the day?

A mistake may have been made with the D5, since the lenth seems almost exatcly the same as that of the Raptor AND the tanker version is shown.

Posted by Manticore (Member # 1227) on :

Well, the Raptor seems to roughly be the same length as the Bird of Prey, in relation to the Enterprise's saucer (which seems a bit big, but oh well). But the D5 should be at least twice as long as it's depicted.

Unless we want to accept that Klingons began scaling even in this early era. [Wink]

Counting pixels here:

The Andorian Kumari class is 567px compared to the 357px of the NX length, or 357.35 meters assuming a 225m NX.

The 2150's Romulan bird-of-prey is 262/357 times the NX length (including the long tail fin), or 165.13m assuming a 225m NX.

The Klingon tanker-ship thingy (a variant D-5 per Bernd) is 245/357 times the NX length, or 154.41m assuming a 225m NX.

The Klingon "raptor"-type is 229/357 times the NX length, or 144.33m assuming a 225m NX.

Taking the pixels-per-meter ratio assuming a 225m NX (per the above), then the widths come to:

K-D-5: 143.70m
K-Rap: 126.05m
R-BoP: 180.25m
NX-01: 132.98m
Andor: 184.03m

All values are +/- a pixel or two . . . I didn't zoom in or anything.

Whatever the case, though, I love that man.

(Incidentally, the large pill-shaped bronze part on the top view of the Kumari (which IIRC is the shuttlebay where they put the Xindi prototype) is only 16 pixels wide . . . or almost exactly 10 meters.)

If it weren't for the obvious tanks along the neck, I would've sworn that the D5 was actually the old Bird-of-Prey... Hmm...

Otherwise, those dimensions were roughly what the general consensus seemed to be (at least based on EAS stats and the like). The Kumari seemed a bit larger, at least in some of the scenes that I remember, but I can certainly accept the figures (other than the D5).

There are lots of images of the Romulan ***bird, I think it turned up in the Fact Files or Magazine a couple of years back.

They're all on Ex Astris. http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/romulans1.htm

I was going to do something else tonight. Now it is obvious what what the next update will be about... [Big Grin]

You know, this comparison really drives home the "futuristic" look of the Romulan vessel...

...If the ships of "Minefield" did come from the future, say, from the TNG era, their looks and cloaks would no longer directly threaten continuity. The role of the Romulans in the episode was never quite clear; it would do a world of good if they were made part of the otherwise-accursed Temporal Cold War.

Of course, the discontinuity of invisibility devices in ENT does not hinge on the Romulan cloaks only. A separate fix would be needed for that. But a novel that explains the "Minefield" vessels as temporal visitors would help not only in tying up loose ends, but in actually giving some dramatic content to that episode.

I don't see a need to explain away the design, myself. I mean, so it's curvy and jagged.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

But there's the (admittedly unspoken onscreen) fact that the TOS Romulan BoP it was based on was supposed to be reverse-engineered from the design of the Consitution-class starships for that era...

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

You could still say they reverse engineered the some of the technology and certanly the warp nacelles are different from anything Romulan before or after.

They'd still probably build a ship that followed their design style, even if its based on stolen technology.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Yes, I'd say that's a reasonable explanation. However, the more I think about Timo's idea, the more intriguing it is to me... [Razz]

Er....on Enterprise, I guess.
Certainly not the case in TNG (where the Galaxy is supposed to the biggest ting in Starfleet) or DS9 (where the "hero ship" is pretty small by any major power's thinking).
