Over at Ebay, they're selling of star trek props from "It's a wrap". Ive been monitoring this looking for starship props and so on and every now and then a little gem pops up
Excelsior study model

It's not a model I've seen before, and I try to keep up. Basically it looks like an excelsior with the nacelles mounted further towards the saucer.

Is this from the DS9 season 7 opener?

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

The nacelles look to be mounted lower as well... Almost as if it was intended to look like the pylons come out straight but there's no vertical portion at the ends. Hm.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

To me it looks like the pylons extend upwards at an angle and the nacelles are mounted below them. It's also got the little wings on the secondary hull that were added back for the E-B.

Well that's one way to ruin a perfectly decent model kit. [Wink]

I know the kitbashes weren't finished to a high degree since they were often in the back of shot, but since this one isn't even painted, I wonder if it was ever shown on screen?

Nice to see the auctions turning up something new again. The fact that there are these occasional gems makes it easier to stomach that they're selling virtually everything off.

I want to know who the hell wants to spend $150+ on this piece of garbage... at the very least, you could just buy the same AMT kit that the item was built from and do it yourself!

Maybe is was among the ragtag fleet of ships seen in A Time to Stand.

I bet it was a study for the Curry/Raging Queen type.

Drexler did tell me that other people built more kitbashes for the DS9 season opener than were depicted in the DS9 tech manual. He only sent me what he had photos of. So this could very well have been one of those ships, since it looks like it was mounted for filming.

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

Oh, can I see your photos?

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

The photos are at ex-astris-scientia.org, under the essay about the DS9 kitbashes.

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

Oh, well in that case, nevermind. I've seen those already.

I'm rather glad that this was never really seen. That means we can ignore it as a peyote flash.

Unfortunately, some of the other peyote flashes made it on screen...

This excelsior looks like it is a refit-excelsior right? The ones we've seen so far, haven't they been original excelsiors?

This isn't a concept model, it's just a commercial Enterprise-B kit that's been hastily bashed together, for who knows what purpose. I can't believe people are actually bidding on this, it's not even worth the cost of the postage.

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Well, it says that it has been assembled from a liscensed product.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

Yes, like, a commercial Ent-B kit [Razz] Licensed products are the kind you find in Wal*Mart. Licensed just means "Paramount knows we made an Excelsior model and won't sue us for it because we're giving them a cut."

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Exactly, so anyone bidding should have read the description and would therefor theoretically be fine with the fact that they could make the model themselves.

Has anyone got DECENT caps of A Time To Stand!?! I couldn't see THAT many ships in that opening shot. I don't think we even pinned down most of the Tech Manual ships.

Posted by Johnny (Member # 878) on :

Actually, I think people came to a fairly firm conclusion about which ship on screen matched up with which model, possibly with some models left over that were supposedly seen on screen but couldn't be found in caps.

Yet another ship turning up would throw a spanner in the works, only this model isn't anywhere near the quality of the ones that we know were on screen (which is really saying something, since the Yeager and Raging Queen are so shoddy). We might never know for certain if this ship was in a shot somewhere, but it doesn't seem very likely. It's certainly more convenient to assume it wasn't. It's hideous.

I second Andrew's question. Ive seen analysis done on that scene, I think on MMoM:s page, but I would also like to see dvd-quality large caps of that scene.

I'm sure the person who wrote up the eBay listing had no idea what it was, so he/she just settled for "concept model" as a good enough definition, similar to the four-nacelled Miranda and the three-nacelled Akagi models.

But it's obvious (to me anyway) that this particular model was one of the kitbashes made for the DS9 season opener. IIRC, Drexler told me that everyone in the VFX department made at least one kitbashed starship for "A Time to Stand," but that they were all built very fast because they were on a deadline & had to film them right away. That's why they all look hastily-made, especially this specimen. They were probably all filmed, but only a few made it into the final shot, although this one doesn't have the weird mustard paint scheme as the others do, for whatever purpose that serves.

The only ships we can identify without a doubt were Dan Curry's model and the Centaur. Since Dan obviously put more work into his model than most of the others, it's logical that it was seen up close. (the Centaur model was seen up close too, but it was moving so fast that its shoddy construction couldn't be made out, whereas the Curry was moving very slowly and was more prominent.)

"the three-nacelled Akagi models"??
I do remember the four-nacelled Miranda, but what is that?

Also, I thought we saw three "new" ships in that scene, Dan's model was the one to the right, but wasn't there also two unidentifiable ships up to left?

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

If this was one of the "Time to Stand" models then it wasn't finished and most likely not used. As rushed as the others were they at least had some semblance of a paint job. I mean come on, there's not a lick of paint on this thing, it's all white and I'd be very surprised if it would photograph at all well. I think it's a reject, it's junk and the first person to try and make it canon gets a thick ear!

I'd ignore it as something puked up by the seller- nothing on this looks made for film- no real lighting rigs either (and that stuff is usually wired prior to assembly or painting).

Crapola design too.

$511.99 for a model ship pulled from the trashbin! Amazing.
