From Ex Astris Scientia:

"11-"00"-1001 In TNG: "11001001" we see two Bynars step forth from a corner of the bridge where only the restroom is supposedly located. So just like two of them work as a unit, Bynars may have to visit the restroom in couples. Or they generally don't have to, but these two Bynars are female."

Is there any canon evidence that that's where the bathroom is? Or even backscreen evidence that I've never heard? Or some fan rumor?

I've seen several cut aways and fan produced blueprints over the years that show them, but as far as semi canon evidence goes, didn't Mike Okuda have a footnote about it in the old TNG technical manual?

What was the door ever labeled as? Does anyone know which episode(s) would have had a clear view?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Of course, jokes aside, there could easily have been some computer conduit running through the bathroom wall ("Head bulkhead" doesn't sound right) that the Bynars had to access.

Speaking of heads, I know the "waste extraction" gag, but seriously...I can't imagine Picard unrolling toilet paper, somehow, much less Spock.

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

Well, can you imagine Queen Elizabeth doing it?

And, for possibly different reasons, President Bush?

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

Point taken. The Spock thing remains though. Toilet paper seems somehow un-Vulcan. Wasteful. I feel like they'd use a bidet or something...

Posted by Josh (Member # 1884) on :

Maybe they use the seashells from Demolition Man instead of TP

"I feel like they'd use a bidet or something..."

Sonic bidet, surely.

Given how full of shit the Vulcans appeared on Enterprise, I don't think they had toilets!

Smitty, can I get a rimshot? [Wink]

I'm thinking about the other examples we've seen anyone use that door. The only one that comes to mind is in "Descent", where the crazy-ass LoreBorg attack the bridge, and a security guy pops out only AFTER everyone's been shot. That waste extraction process must be a bitch to stop mid-stream. [Smile]

Vulcans don't have anuses.

Posted by Johnny (Member # 878) on :

I'm sure if the plot called for it, they'd have two.

Ask Commander Tucker. I'm sure he could tell you.

Yes, that is the bathroom. The door label was HEAD just as the adjacent door in that alcove was labeled CONFERENCE.

I know there's been episodes where it's been readable. I recently came across one where Wes is speaking with Ens. Mendon, the Benzite, in A Matter of Honor in season 2. As the characters move during the scene, a few letters can be seen.

SOUNDEFFECT!
Holy crap! It's old home week! Where ya been, homey?
Ever get that Halo ship completed?

Maybe the door leads to a severed dolphin head, attached to the main computer via wires and conduits- used for navigation....

Eerily, I stumbled that a few minutes after writing that post yesterday/the other day/I don't know what day it is I just woke up leave me alone.

I am watching TNG "The Pegasus" right now, and I just noticed that at about 20 minutes in ( on television, so I'm not sure for DVD), on the bridge, there is a black starfleet officer in a blue uniform that gets a PADD approved by Riker, then goes through the "head doors" You can't see the doors, but you can definitely tell that that's where he goes.

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

Maybe he's showing what he thinks of Riker's orders?

Maybe there's just a hole down to deck 2? [Big Grin]

Maybe some light reading? [Wink]

See... I don't get it. Is there really that much of a stigma about using the head? Military guys?

So the security officer is in the middle of dropping a deuce when the Borg show up... I guess it happens. Shame he had to die with a tire tread in his shorts... but oh well.

Now, what I do question is the proximity of the stinky to the bridge. Do you really want the CO fighting his own gag reflex at the same time he's trying to fight off a Romulan Warbird? Maybe they have candles, or a kickin' air filtration system.

Data also operates as an air freshener. His positronic brain can de-ionize and freshen the air around him, which is then blown out his ass. [Wink]

Same here. Any bridges that I've designed have *not* had a head on the bridge level. God forbid the Captain might have to walk a few steps!

I still like the beam-the-poop-out-of-your-rectum idea...

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Well, in the big D's defence, the bridge is bigger than some people's homes...

Sometimes when you gotta go, you gotta go.

On the Franz Joseph bridge plans there is a head on the Bridge level.

Diane Carey had an interesting scene in one of her novels where the main character asks Kirk (or was it Spock) for permission to step above deck (or something like that) so she could go use the restroom.

Star Trek's always been so sanitary, like the Brady Bunch. We've seen sinks but never a toilet.

I'm scratching my head right now, though, trying to think of any SciFi show that has shown the facilities. We've seen Mal peeing and washing his hands on Firefly but I can't think of any other.

Sheridan and Garibaldi were shown in a restroom once on B5.

BSG Redux has toilets as Gauis Baltar could tell you.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

BJ: Yeah, that scene impressed me. I remember they didn't wash their hands, though, they passed them under presumably radioactive thingies to clean them. So ok, they're sterile - but what if you've got a little drop o' gold on your finger? Wipe it on your pants??

They had pissers in Yamato, too [Big Grin]

And Adama has a small bathroom in his quarters, though I can't recall if there's a loo.

BSG Redux has *unisex* toilets come to think of it again.

Since Vulcan is an arid planet - and presumably Vulcans are descended from desert animals, they may not even need TP - their bowels might just recover any moisture. Seems logical.

Isn't anyone going to say "SHIT HAPPENS"? I can't be the only punster.

Seriously, all my bridges have adjacent heads. Things happen quickly in space. If you're not careful, you might miss it.

I'd expect 24th Century AC would take care of any odors (or 24th Century diets...). After all, all meats consumed onboard are synthetic. Maybe the reasons are partially esthetic - not just philosophic.

Well, there has to be somewhere for the new officer of the week to clean himself up when he shits his pants...

On second thought, maybe it's where they hide all the dead red shirts. Or yellow shirts. Whatever the hell they were.

I was having a conversation about this with my brother the other day when it occurred to me that in the modern Navy there are, of course, heads...and the officers, obviously, must need to use them sometimes....so I wonder, has it ever been that the Admiral has been dropping a depth charge, so to speak, when suddenly the Russkies or a U-boat or something attacks? Explosions rock the ship, calls for the Admiral to the bridge, and he's there frantically trying to pinch it off and zip up his pants at the same time? It has to have happened, statistically speaking, right?

Next to the Head there should be a closet where they stash all the burnt out panels that explode weekly.
There's probably a huge storage area in the floor between the Con/Ops consoles and the viewscreen to store all the replacment panels/consoles....
Maybe a mop too- occasionally redshirt blood is spilled and we cant have that staining the beige carpet on the flagship, can we?
