Totally Awesome work!! I never knew that there were so many uniform types in Starfleet. Are you going to be designing any more?

So in the Medical Coat /Female Variant Duty Uniform, pants are'nt part of the dresscode?
I gonna like the future.

Very nice! I like the Officer's Weather Cloak! Star Trek meets The Matrix! [Smile]

I saw your e-mail addy - where is .ky?

And what are the little winglets coming off the back of the marine corp dress uniform?

Wow!

I like them a lot! [Smile]

What is PRISM by the way?

Oh, one suggestion: perhaps Arctic duty uniform for the Marines?

And .ky is the Cayman Islands.

Nicely done. Now, should you happen to have more copious amounts of time on your hands, please do that for 23rd Century TOS Movie Era Uniforms (ST:II thru the first 20 minutes of ST:GEN). That I'd love to see!

I'd try my hand at it, but I suck at fashion. After all, my summer wardrobe consists almost exclusively of Hawaiian print shirts.... [Roll Eyes]

Cool designs! I especially like the Marine variants, though the shoulder pads kinda clash too much with the camouflage pattern, IMO...

Posted by Ahkileez (Member # 734) on :

Sarvek: I hadn't planned to, but I think I might. Just for the fun of it. There's so many things we don't get to see in Trek. Even though what I'd do wouldn't be remotely canon, I think it's nice just to have an idea to play with.

Abbadon: That's just a variant [Smile] The women would wear it by choice, not regulation. If they want to show their legs off, that's their business [Smile]

AndrewR: That cloak is a modification of Picard's from "All Good Things..." I think. I haven't seen taht episode in like six or seven years so I'm not certain. I just cleaned it up and added the grey material and changed the red stripes to match the modern era uniforms.

The 'widgets' on the uniform is actually an artifact of erasing [Smile] I need to clean that up.

Oh, and yeah Phoenix is right, .ky means Cayman Islands.

Phoenix: PRISM is like a special forces group within the RPG that I play with (www.acalltoduty.com). They're part special forces/part intel. Hence the black.

I really like the artic uniform suggstion tho. I'm definitely going to run with that [Smile]

Griffworks: I dunno about doing the TOS movie era uniforms. From a design standpoint they're very simplistic. I like them and all, but there's not a whole lot you can do with them. The character I play is old enough to have worn the Enterprise-C version (no turtleneck) and I once made a green version of the uniform because he was in the SF Marines first. But I dunno if I'd try all these things with that uniform type. Who knows tho [Smile]

MinutiaMan: The camouflage pattern does clash. I think I'm going to change the color of the shoulder pads. At least in the jungle version (to green). But the grey matches the urban ones so I'm going to leave that.

Very interesting work, I'd really like to know how this is done.

For the camouflaged uniforms I suggest you try using the canon combat fatigues as a basis instead of the standard DS9 duty uniform.
I think it was seen in twice in DS9, in "Nor the Battle.." and "Siege of AR558".
Oh and an arctic variant would be very cool indeed [Wink]

It might also be interesting to see a TNG/DS9 era version of the old white engineering suit seen in TWOK and TUC.

The ones with the stripe across the chest? Nah, those are boring [Smile] I mean all it would look like is normal togs with a stripe across the chest [Smile]

Nice work, Ahkileez. I really like a lot of what you did to standard Starfleet officer duty and dress uniforms. I may have to start playing around in Photoshop now.

I really like the marine uniforms. To an extent, I agree with MinutiaeMan on the camouflage uniforms. I think the jungle duty uniform would like better with the shoulders a hunter or forest green. I agree with you that the gray looks good with the urban uniform. And, yeah, Phoenix is right that an arctic uniform would look pretty cool. I like your ideas for the dress uniforms; I think it ties in better with Starfleet than using current US Marine uniforms with an insignia added on.

I'm with AndrewR on the officer's weather cloak. There's definately a Matrix feel to it. And, I know where you coming from on the design. You're talking about the red jacket that Captain Picard started wearing over his gray casual uniform in (I think) the fifth season, right? Very nice, it's a trench coat version of it.

I also really like the starfighter uniforms. For the duty uniform, did you base part of it off of the white racing uniform from the Voyager episode where Kim, Torres, and Paris enter that race? I liked that uniform, but I think it looks better with your darker palette.

My favorite, though, are the VIP honor guard uniforms. I especially like the commander's; it reminds me a bit of the TOS movie uniforms from TWoK on. On the security uniform, I think a more pure gray would look better on the center section of the tunic than the standard bluish gray, but I still think it looks pretty good.

A couple questions for you, though, since I'm having trouble discerning a couple colors. On the intelligence duty uniform, did you make the undershirt purple (like the dress uniform) or leave with command red? Also, did you change the base color of the Marine duty uniform from charcoal to very dark green?

Posted by Ahkileez (Member # 734) on :

Siegfried: Thanks for the props man. And about the Marine uniforms, I have spruced them up a little bit, including the jungle togs there. Gave it more appropriate shoulder pads just like I said [Smile]

The cloak, as far as I know, comes from All Good Things. I haven't seen the ep in forever, but that's the only place I remember seeing it. I just modified the version Spike made.
Original

That is indeed the racing uniform from Voyager, yep. I never saw that episode, but I saw screencaps and thought the uniform was awesome. But I didn't want the starfighter uniform to look like a duplicate with blue stripes, so I gave it the dark shoulders. And I've just updated it with the helmet as well [Smile]

The VIP uniforms are my favorite too. I'm not surprised no one has seen the inspiration on the uniforms yet. The inspiration comes from the "Crimson Guard" from GI Joe. Those were my favorite of the figures as a kid. I think these guys are a good homage to that [Smile] As for the blue-gray insert... well it is a military we're dealing with, and militaries tend to be as standard as is possible, so those that use the gray inserts would probably use all the same kind rather than a dozen variations of it.

On the intel thing, yeah I changed it. It's not quite the same color purple as the jacket. My fault really. I might fix that. As for the Marines thing: Yes. I changed the base uniform from dark gray (or black in the movies really) to a very dark green. It's subtle, but I think it adds to it.

I was messing around some and added some other things for fun [Smile]

Try this link to Spike's page on the 2395 to 2405 uniforms instead. His site doesn't seem to like direct linking to images.

Now that I see the cloak in question, I can say that I don't remember that being in "All Good Things..." at all. The future crew was never on the on any planet (when they would probably need the cloak). However, I think that might actually come from a scene in Voyager's "Endgame." I think Janeway wore it when visiting Chakotay in the future scenes.

As for not catching the Crimson guard homage... well, I never watched G.I. Joe. I know, that makes me an un-American unpatriotic fool. However, I do understand and agree with your point that there probably wouldn't be different shades of gray on all the dress uniforms.

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

I think you'll find that the trench coat was worn by Janeway in "Endgame", in the scene where she visits Chakotay's grave.

I'm not sure the Chaplin is such a good idea, traditionally Star Trek has avoided having the Federation or Starfleet involved in any kind of religion.
However if you're set on having priests and Padres in Starfleet then you might want to represent a fair cross-section of beliefs and not just the human one's either. [Wink]

Also, should the Federation naval patrol have a Starfleet communicator?

I like the lightly armoured marine (even though I'm not crazy about the idea of Starfleet marines in the first place) it's a nice way to tie-in the old movie uniforms with the uniforms of the 24th Century.

Posted by Ahkileez (Member # 734) on :

Reverend: I don't buy the 'no religion in the future' bunk so if people need to fullfill their religious needs, there has to be someone there to facilitate it. I'm also not in the business of being politically correct. I know enough about catholic/anglican stuff to make a 24th century Chaplain uniform. I don't know enough about any other religion to make the same. So I won't bother trying just to keep someone from feeling left out.

Federation Naval Patrol might be part of the combined service, or not. Who knows. [Smile]

As for the light armor, I like it, but I really would have preferred it was something more sleek looking. Might work on that some more.

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

I'm not saying there is no religion in the future, ,at least as far as Trek is concerned I'm sure there is. In fact I'm almost certain the Sisko quoted the bible at least once.

What I am saying is that I don't think that it's practical for Starfleet to have a service dedicated to providing Religious services.
There are literally hundreds of Earth Religions and over 150 Federation worlds, assuming that most worlds have more or less the same number of belief systems that means there would be several thousand, or even tens of thousands of Religions out there. Imagine what it would be like if even a fraction of those religions would have to be represented at a Starbase, or even worse onboard a starship?
It's far more likely that it's up to the individual churches, movements, temples, whathaveyou to set up and provide their services wherever they can or wish (within reason) while remaining autonomous from any military or governmental institutions.

To support this I think there is a line in TNG -- I forget the episode but it was on of the "Worf has a crisis of faith" ones -- He basically says that if a person's beliefs interfere with their duty then they have no business being in Starfleet. That can be interpreted in several ways but to me it says that there is a clear separation between organised Religion and the Military.

Personally I couldn't give a monkey's right nut about being politically correct but I do think that it is important to stay true to the ideals of ethnic an cultural diversity that Gene laid down from the start.
But like I said if you are dead set on having some religions represented in the services then the least you should do is represent a fair cross-section. You are on the internet and it shouldn't be too difficult to find some appropriate reference materials, even a uniform styled in a similar fashion to one of the various Vulcan priestesses' costumes seen over the years would at least help.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

I don't think Reverend's saying there's no religion in the future so much as Star Trek doesn't show either the Federation or Starfleet involved in them. Obviously, there is religion in the future since the original Enterprise had the chapel (seen in "Balance of Terror"), the Vulcans have a religion rituals, and the Bajorans have such a strong faith in higher powers that actually do exist. We've just never seen any of the Starfleet starships carry aboard a chaplin.

Personally, I like the idea of Starfleet having a Religious Corps -- the members of which are stationed throughout Starfleet's facilities and on the larger and deep-space vessels. However, I'd recommend against having every faith have a different uniform. Even though Star Trek does a lousy job showing population diversity, realistically almost every race will have multiple religions. That's gonna be a whole lot of uniforms. Ignore that last part, though, if you were planning on having the pinstripes on the uniform a different color or pattern for each faith.

Very nice work on the new uniform additions, Ahkileez. I like those Starfleet issue exercise suits. Very nice, indeed.

Posted by Griffworks (Member # 1014) on :

If you follow the Modern Day U.S. Military line of thinking that was the basis for TOS, the various U.S. Services have a chaplin's section that's somewhat separate, but still a strong part of each service. In the services, they wear the same uniform that their unit wears on a daily basis, w/the only exception being that they wear a marking, usually a simple lapel pin like a Cross, Star of David or similar device to mark the religion that they personally worship and are devoted to. However, they are required to be familiar with aspects of all religions, tho not necessarily intimately so. For instance, most Catholic Priests aren't going to be intimately familiar with Islam, but I'll bet you'd be hard-pressed to find one that hasn't read the Koran and has a good understanding of Islam, Judaism, and any number of non-Catholic Christian religions. Chaplins are also looked upon as a sort of couselor by a great many people, regardless the chaplins actual religious beliefs. You can't always have a chaplin of your Faith in your unit, but you can always go and talk to a "Man (or Woman) of the Cloth" about issues regarding religion or morales.

Anyhow, I don't see why StarFleet wouldn't have something very similar to that. After all, they respect a great many things, if only to take it at face value. I think I recall reading about a chaplin in one of the old Star Trek novels, this was before TNG first aired. I know that I'd feel a lot better having someone of The Cloth serving on a ship that is the only think keeping me from dying a horrible death in the deep, dark expanses of space. [Eek!]

Just my random flow of neurons and misfiring of pre-ganglianic nerve endings on the subject.... [Wink]

Exept of course Starfleet vessels tend to have counsllors any way, so wouldn't chaplins be doubling up?

As to the Uniforms, does anybody else think that the black belt on the marine artic uniform stands out to far? Also maybe you could add some pockets for them or do they use some type of webbing to carry their gear?

Also why would the Federation Naval Patrol use the same dress uniform as Starfleet surley they would have thier own uniform type to seprate them form starfleet? Any ideas for their duty uniforms? Swimsuits perhaps? [Wink]

The religion in Star Trek/Starfleet debate is really a hot issue. And this probably isn't the venue for it.

However, I do think it's a good point so I'm going to look and see if I can at least see if I can gimick up a Vulcan one.

For the most part, the uniforms would be signatory to the faith of the person in questin (just not overly loaded down with the paraphanalia of that person's personal religion). So a Catholic/Anglican might have the little collar thing, a Jewish one might have the shawl over his shoulders and maybe the cap, a hindu or muslim one might have the turban or something as part of the formal dress, like Scotty wearing his with the kilt. The variations would be small. Just enough to be signatory.

Griffworks does make the point tho, that Chaplains, while 'experts' in their own religion, they are required to be knowledgable about a certain amount of others. (many christian chaplains can read both the Quo'ran and the Torah and perform ceremonies from those religions). And it's not as if you're Hindu you can't benefit from the advise and the strength of faith of a Jewish chaplain for instance.

Starfleet would never allow a priest to serve on a galaxy class starship: there are children aboard after all...

I'm sure that by the 24th Century they've gotten Catholic priests to behave themselves. [Wink]

I like the "Hazardous Leakage Repair Suit" although you might want to streamline that name a little. Perhaps "HAZMAT Suit" would be a little better.

I still don't think that the Federation Naval Patrol would be a part of Starfleet, it is after all just a global coast guard and has nothing to do with space travel.
I'd ditch the Starfleet combadge and give them a more old fashioned flip top or wrist communicator instead.
It also might be interesting to see a more practical version of the duty uniform, one that they'd actually wear out to sea. Perhaps something that incorporates a futuristic version of a life jacket and maybe even a baseball cap.

The Vulcan Chaplin is a good start, although I'd be inclined to incorporate the look of the old TNG, long dress uniform only make it look similar the Vulcan robes. Perhaps have the trim line on the chest cross over each other diagonally instead of going straight down? Maybe even incorporate the white and orangey/red colouring of the Monks and Priestesses of Mt Selaya?

Not necessarily, no. For starters, it would depend on which era you're talking about. Second, they could easily fill in the role of counsellor to those who would prefer a specific religious individual, or at least the proverbial "man of the cloth" instead of the "local shrink". Some people are just more comfortable talking to a Priest/Rabi/Imam/Pastor/what-have-you than to a doctor.

One thing I want to say about the chaplains uniform is that you wouldn't likely have uniforms devoted to each religion, except for very specific events. Day-to-day chaplains uniforms in the modern U.S. Military Services is whatever the rest of that particular Service - usually the specific unit - wears on a daily basis. I'd think that StarFleet would do the same, as it's the most practical approach to show someone who's in the same service as his "crew".

Posted by Ahkileez (Member # 734) on :

I agree, Griffworks. The chaplain's duty uniform would probably just have a different internal shirt collar and maybe pins related to his position, but that's about it.

It's only the formal dress uniform I put up there, which is normally more ornate anyway.

For my RPG I did up a duty uniform with just a different undershirt for the chaplain one of my players has.

OH! PLEAZZZZZZE!!! Just one First-contact-style Skant!! It would be funny! And- interesting. I believe Pulaski wore a skant - but over trousers.

Actually, AndrewR, Dr. Pulaski's uniform was just a modified sciences division uniform. It had a little flappy skirt thing that stretched from the waist down to about mid-hip. A good episode to see this in is "Where Silence Has Lease." Sorry, I couldn't find any pictures of the uniform, but it's definitely not a skant worn over trousers. The skants were almost sleeveless, and the good doctor definitely had sleeves.

And I'm siding with Ahkileez on this. Those skant uniforms are something that should never be revived. I doubt Starfleet will ever bring them back after all of those sexual harrassment lawsuits the women crewmembers filed. Too many dongs hanging out.
