I lost access to my powerful laptop (My wifes using it for report cards) so I started a little project for the next week. This is the UES Meteor...

Y'know I always did like this Starfleet Museum design. Good Work.

You know, I've always thought that the deflector housing was too big. Feel free to modify (in fact, please modify!)

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Good start. I agree with Masao, the deflector is too large and prominent. It looks like she is sucking on a pacifier.

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

I dunno, considering that Fireball/Comet was a pathfinder design that was pioneering a whole new approach to warp field theory, it makes sense that the deflector system would need to be more robust to handle the various stresses. Or perhaps it's integrated to a greater role than previous designs with the warp engine. Either way, for a pathfinder vessel, I think it looks better to have it larger than one would expect.

How about I move it back so that it just protudes a little bit....

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Looks better. You could recess the deflector even more, so that the top is flush with the sphere. This is pre TOS, so I'd assume that the deflector will be a radar dish-ish design. Maybe that recessed into the protrusion might look nice?
Now I have seen the design over at The Starfleet Museum, does the protrusion contain a dish, kind of like the Connie refit with it's dish cover?

Posted by Makotokat (Member # 1041) on :

I think part of the idea is a 'dust cover' to protect the dish from particles. I tried putting it flush and wasn't pleased with the overall effect. A slight protusion is best I think. The only other concern I really have is the shuttlebay. I find the wall of the deutrium tank protuding into the bay somewhat disconcerting. Landing would involve some interesting piloting.

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Where is the shuttle bay?

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

It's located inside the secondary hull with the opening doors on the side. Well this be the UES combat version with those gun ports or will it be that Fedex ship? [Smile]

Posted by Makotokat (Member # 1041) on :

Towards the back of the engineering hull.

check out the page....

"... or will it be that Fedex ship?"

One of the few companies to survive the third world war itake it? I think that D-7 Cruisers and Romulan BoP's are actually paid advertisements for KFC. I wonder if anyone has thought to do an image of that...?

Warship....haven't modeled the lasers yet. Just playing with texturing the nacelles at the moment. Must ask Masao about moving the shuttlebay to the top of the secondary hull.

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

I don't think moving the shuttlebay would be a particularly good idea. I should think the secondary hull's dorsal side would be taken up by things like deuterium tanks, the warp drive assembly and the "spine" of the ship is traditionally where the main trunking for the EPS, ODN, gas, liquid and life support systems goes, to say nothing of the docking hardpoints.

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

The deuterium tank is actually that big ball at the end of the secondary hull.

Right where it could be hit by a blind epileptic klingon tac officer drunk on bloodwine.

Did a little work this afternoon

Move the shuttle bay anywhere you'd like!
I think it looks better with the shorter deflector housing.

I'll try a few things Masao....maybe call it the Production version. Maybe the Comet was a converted Fireball in military Config, the following ships changed from lessons learned from the first 3?

BTW the hull metal texture I'm using is from someone else, still trying to figure out where it came from. I think it's from one of the 3D gladiators but my files are a mess. So if you identify your texture let me know So I can credit you!

????

Anyway figure out the texture, it was from some of Fabio's models on the SFMuseum site.

I just found the texture this morning sorting through old files (I have a lot of them) I'm reinstalling my art programs on my laptop and there it was.....

.
.
.

BABYLON 5!

Can't remember where or when I downloaded it but the texture is unmistakable!

Can't find the Meteor....but I did find this.

My files are a disaster....

Just slightly phallic, huh?

Posted by Makotokat (Member # 1041) on :

Whatever do you mean? Okay maybe a little. I had some sketches working off a connestoga/san francisco look. My idea of a Romulan war era cruiser. Small, cramped and primative. And able to land on a planet (for those groundside starbases from TOS)

Posted by Makotokat (Member # 1041) on :

Maybe I should redesign the deflector

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

It looks fine- though I might make the deflector gold and have it extend slightly from the hull with a touch of blue glow behind it (an homage to the NX-01).

I'd also think about adding some NX-01 style shuttlepod bays to the ventral side to compliment that big shuttlebay- transporters were probably not commonly used on away missions just yet.

Hmmm...and, as she's a warship, I"d add on several NX-style weapon's ports along her sides and a couple at her nose.

And I'd make it all metallic like the NX-01.

God, I miss Enterprise.
Sorry: Doug Drexler's blog has me all verklempt, I just need a minute.

That isn't a big shuttle bay. she's a small cruiser like the Fed Old Light Cruiser from Star Fleet Battles. Armament is 2 forward lasers and a missile launcher (real old school)

Sorta like this...only not so 1970's

Yes, I think you should. The way it is now, it looks like a cork stuck into a rugby ball.

Thanks Masao, I might try something original.

Who's this BlueKomet guy? What happened to Makotokat?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

I'm sure Reverend made something along these lines last year.
I recall I tweaked his design somehow and made it far cooler.
No one else thought so but genius is never recognised before death.

Changed my name....someone else started using Makotokat elsewhere.....It was getting confusing....

*strains to remember anything past my last trip to the pub*

No, you lost me. What did I design again?

Er.. some ship with a central tube-like body and two nacelles- I recfigured your (posted) illustration so the hull was lower or something and then you said something and we all laughed and that was the end of the episode.

I nevet get any royalty checks though.

Just got back from seeeing the new film.....apart from the bad engineering set and scottys sight gag........excellent!

Well that's what you get for not paying your union dues!
