I did a few of these for the Antares, Korolev, Erewhon & Deneva sheets and decided to play about with the templates and do a few extra just for fun.

This is between my favorite stuff from Trek fan art... I guess it's somewhat simple for you to make compared to those ellaborated logos you always pull, but still! [Wink]

Keep them coming, Rev.

always a pleasure.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

I'm sure there's a reason I should already be aware of, but why is the Antares name smaller and below its registry, unlike the other plaques?

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Creative licence. For some reason I thought it'd be interesting to put more emphasis on the number than on the name.

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

I like the one for the Santa Maria since it's different than the standard format. But why "The" Santa Maria?

For the shadowing on the text & logos, are you just using a drop shadow? It looks to me like they are hovering over the plaque, rather than being carved/extruded from it. It's really evident on Antares' UESPA logo.

It's probably due to the font you're using, but it looks like there's a space (or partial space) before the last letter of DENEVA on both the Deneva's and LaSalle's plaques.

Those may be a bit nitpicky, but overall, nice work!

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

I originally only did some for the schematic sheets, on which they are rather small so not really meant to hold up to too close scrutiny, it's all rather quick and dirty, but yes the shadow on the UESPA bugs me a little.

As for THE Santa Maria; if you recall it's not a Starfleet ship and I modelled it after THE Raven's plaque.

Posted by WizArtist II (Member # 1425) on :

I'm assuming you're using Illustrator, does it have a tool similar to Corel's "The Boss" that creates a mesa effect?

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

He uses PSP as has been mentioned in other threads. I don't know what he's using to make the effects, but I have an EyeCandy plugin for PSP that has several effects like beveling, embossing, shadows, etc.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

What is the quote at the bottom of the plaque for The Raven?

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

I have to be honest I rarely play around with those funky effects and plugins so I've probably got more than I realise. Anyway, here's what I probably should have done.

"Fourth". And E-C was built at Earth Station McKinley.

But word.

They really need to put a spell checker on PSP, my dyslexia is starting to piss me off.

Where did the Earth Station McKinley reference come from?

Anyway, all the others have been redone.
Plus a few more.

Any suggestions as to what else needs doing?

Write the text in something else first & then copypasta.

PS: on Thelin's plaque, "possess".

Ah, not to worry then, it's not a primary source. If you must split hairs then it was constructed at McKinley and Launched from Frisco, like Voyager but the other way around. [Wink]

I find it funny that the Yamato has a quote from Thomas Jefferson...

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Me too, but that's what Memory Alpha says it had. Who's Thomas Jefferson?

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

One of those USA country-builder-types. I figured the Yamato would have something from a Japanese figure...

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

He's the one that wrote the Declaration of Independence. Which makes him, I as I enjoy pointing out to the bilious looks of fellow Americans, a British terrorist and anti-governmental rebel.

Galaxy and Odyssey quotes are neat, too.

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

He also had an afair with one of his house servants, which is why hundreds of african americans can trace their family trees back to him. Didn't he also have a liking for Macaroni and Cheese?

Posted by HerbShrump (Member # 1230) on :

Jefferson was also the third President of the United States. And is also on the $2 bill and the nickel.

Not that you'll find $2 bills easily.

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Guys, I tease. I do have a vague notion as to who Jefferson was. [Wink]

Makes you wonder though, just who decides on the motto for a ship and are all subsequent ships with that name stuck with it?

Since these are quite easy to throw together, I'm still open to suggestions. What else needs a dedication plaque?

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Assuming you're limiting yourself just to ships seen onscreen, whether we've seen their bridges or not...Hathaway? The Nebula-class Prometheus? Valley Forge? Hood? Thunderchild? Endeavour? Farragut? Kyushu? Princeton? Melbourne? Firebrand? Rhode Island? Bellerophon?

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Well the Hood certainly deserves one, it's appeared often enough. I was thinking maybe the Rutledge too, perhaps to a bunch of "former postings" ships, since I've already done the Stargazer. Let's see, what other former postings do we know about? Al-Batani? Republic? Victory? Trieste? Okinawa? Destiny?

Was there ever a canon registry established for the T'Kumbra?

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

There was not, but feel free to use my 64927 assignment.

Other postings include Potemkin, Pegasus (Riker), Livingston, Saratoga (Sisko), Destiny (Ezri), Billings (Janeway/Tuvok?), Wyoming (Tuvok), Exeter (Paris), Merrimac (Chakotay, from the VGR bible), Farragut (Kirk), Zhukov (Barclay), Repulse (Pulaski), & Wellington (Ro)

A cut scene from "Measure of A Man" had mention of Picard serving as an ensign about USS Reliant.

Two others you could do would be a plaque for USS Grissom & one for Enterprise 1701 after her refit.

USS Prometheus...

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Ok, he's some new ones.

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Yeah...the Grissom one I dig. I was wondering how you were gonna handle it. Nice call on making Destiny a Sovereign.

Decided to change the quote on the new Defiant, eh? What is it, "Fortune emboldens"?

Haha...now I'm really looking at the names on the Grissom plaque. Cute choices,

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

HerbShrump, my brother used to collect $2 bills. I thought they were fake when he showed me his first one. He used to have 5 or 6...they were cool.

Since I first saw the Surak-Class on ENT I've held the belief that the Oberth was a mostly Vulcan design, so I took this opportunity with the Grissom's plaque to cement that idea. [Wink]

I think the motto for the Defiant translates as "fortune favours the bold". I thought about using a Les Mis quote, but couldn't find anything good. But that's Victor Hugo for you.

As for the Destiny, I thought there should be a reason why a ship (that rates one and a half counsellors) is running passengers/wounded to and from the front lines and the core worlds. So I thought perhaps a Sovereign adapted for hospital ship duty is big enough to take care of itself (so if doesn't need a Defiant escort) and fast enough to make the journey in decent time. Of course it could just as easily have been a Nebula, Intrepid or that Yeagar monstrosity, but I wanted a Sovereign to be doing SOMETHING in the war. [Wink]

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

I think, then, that you want "audentes fortuna juvat", as noted on Columbia's plaque.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

I believe the Grissom's quote can translate to "We aspire to the stars."

I forgot to put in that Dr. Crusher also served as captain of the Pasteur in an alternate future.

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find out who's name on the Pasteur's dedication plaque comes between David Livingston and Peter Lauritson. The initials look like M.P. or N.P. other than that I can't tell.

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Merri Howard.

(That's sad that I looked at it for all of 1 second & knew that.)

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Well it slipped by whomever did the entry on Memory Alpha, so maybe you should sign up and do them a favour. [Wink] I think there are some other question marks there too.

Anyway, here's two versions for the Pasteur. Real and alternate future version.

I'd bet that the other officers on that list 'served' on runabouts too [Wink] I don't think Sisko's list should be so long, is what I'm saying, because to me every runabout is a 'temporary' position. Kind of like listing every shuttle anyone ever piloted somewhere.

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

Well since the Runabouts were commissioned ships, they should at least have a CO listed, but it would be silly to list the station's entire senior staff as being assigned to the runabouts.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

Yeah, I just wouldn't have made the runabouts commissioned ships if I were in charge of Star Trek B) I always thought they should properly be assigned to a mother ship or station similarly to shuttles.

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

Well either way they didn't get plaques, so it's neither here nor there.

Oh I know about wikiquote, but you still have to FIND a good quote, preferably a terse, relevant one that isn't overused. The terse ones tend to be overused and the relevant ones tend towards the verbose.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

Did they ever use "Eureka, I have found it!" or something similar for an Oberth or other sciency type ship?

And I like the use of Cyrllic in the Tsoilkovsky's plaque. But was it actually called the K.E. Tsoilkovsky in canon? I don't remember. However, you've called it the K.Z. Tsiopkovskij by mistake [Wink]

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

He recreated the actual misspelled plaque.

Posted by The Ginger Beacon (Member # 1585) on :

It K Z TSIOLKOPSKY. The last letter is a "short i" (Й), meaning the last bit of the name is pronouced as E-I. Sort of.

You could either have К Е ЦИОЛКОВСКЙ, or К Е ЦИОЛКОВСКИЙ, or if you want to transliterate the original Polish, it would be something like К Е ЦИОЛОЎСКИ, but it would not sound right.

Incidentaly, the Ў is a "W" sound, and the В is a "V".

Well I can neither read, speak nor spell in Russian, so I just copied what I saw. Perhaps the language has change somewhat in 400 years, no?

Anyway, I'm experimenting with some TOS era plaques, but I'm not 100% happy with the look.

That Imperial one is definitely more interesting than the plain old good universe ones. "Veni, Vidi, Vici" might have made a good quote, although a little trite.

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

That should be used for the ISS Caesar. Since it is an earth centered empire, I don't imagine that there would be any ships named after aliens. So, we could see all of the evil names we wouldn't see in the normal universe. Like Hitler, Stalin, Nixon...
