Y'know, I spent ages (okay, 5 minutes) trying to come up with a witty, clever, and just plain special subject title. Then I gave up.

New TF comic. From Dreamweaver. I have no idea if it's picking up from the comic or cartoon. I also remember rumours that there will be a Beast Wars one.

Anyway, preview:

Damn you Psy, now I have to go to the local comic store and buy it because the preview on that webpage is not enough.

I never really got into TF comics as a kid (just the TV show and the toys), but if that picture of Soundwave trapped in the ice is any indication of how the rest of the art is going to be, I'll see if I can find it.

Yeh, just got the ad in my Previews. Won't be out till May, though. Pppbbbbblllt!!

this is off topic, but have any of you tried the Dotcomics program from Marvel's website? I think it sucks personally, and this preview just confirmed it. The images here are clearer than in the crap from Marvel, and you don't have to put up with those annoying ads.

At least I got to read the Banner limited series for free.

I bought it. I thought it was really good while I was reading it, and now I've finished I think that Samson was completely out of character, that they portrayed the Savage Hulk wrong (he's a hurt child who throws huge temper tantrums, not a pissed-off idiot), and I don't know if it actually fits into the canon that well.

Plus the art was, at best, "unique".

"...and I don't know if it actually fits into the canon..."

Erm... Which?

He means the Banner series doesn't fit well in Marvel continuity.

I enjoyed it, though I think it was trying too hard to do something new with the character, and did so virtually at the total expense of thirty years continuity...although when I think about it, some of that stuff was horrible. Who wants to remember the Bi-beast?

Ever since Joe Quesada became Editor in Chief, Marvel hasn't given two shits about continuity, either. I'm not too bothered by it. Marvel has been putting out higher quality stories as of late, and it's about time they did. Nearly gave up on 'em, they were so bad...Thankfully the Let's ripoff Image days are almost a thing of the past.

I'd heard that Brian Azzarello did that story (and Bruce Jones' new spin in the monthly) in response to Ang Lee doing the Hulk movie. They wanted to bring the comic up to "movie standards" so that when the film comes out the book will actually be accessible to new readers drawn in by the film...unlike X-men, which at the time of the cinema release was so convoluted it hurt to read.

Two things I have enjoyed about the Hulk lately: One, he's killed people, either accidently (as the monthly is showing) or on purpose but without being able to intellectualize the fact that he was ending somebodies life (as in the Banner series). Even as a child I couldn't believe that somebody could do that much damage and not kill...it was silly. Now he truly is a monster, not just to insurance companies, but to himself. I suppose Banner can rationalize causing mass destruction, as long as people aren't dying, because the Hulk is usually also saving the Earth or something. But causing deaths, there is a moral quagmire.

Second, I enjoyed that Banner tried to kill himself. Of course he would have. And of course, it wouldn't work, since stress is what changes him into the Hulk...

As you can tell, I'm a Hulk fan. Even though Peter David left.

April... dammit, I'll be away and won't be able to buy these. Transformers kick ass. I like that they show the Decepticon logo instead of Autobot.

There's a reason they show the Decepticon logo rather than the Autobot one. Give me a bit...

Yeah, PAD did indeed "rulez", although I liked Jenkins run. I've always preferred the Hulk as the multiple personality disorder sufferer, rather than the "don't make me angry" version. Pity, as it seems we won't be getting the Prof or the Grey Hulk for a while, and I quite like them (the grey Hulk in particular). If it's going to tie into the movie, I'm guessing it'll stick to "Don't make me angry" boy, since that's almost certainly what they'll use in the film (either him, or the sort of savage/grey cross from early in the run and towards the end of PAD's run, where he's a big green pissed off machine that's also capable of talking normally).

I can buy the rampaging monster causing a lot of damage and killing, I just think the Banner series went a bit too far in the amount of destruction is showed. I can't quite see the Hulk staying still long enough to level an entire city. He always struck me as someone who's got a rather short attention span. Plus I always felt than Banner would have a degree of control over the Hulk, and would try and make him stop, or at least jump to a more secluded area.

Your right though in that it does put the whole thing in a new perspective. I always thought that Banner was a bit too woosy about becoming the Hulk, as he usually did good. If he's causing deaths though, then it truelly is something to fear. And I also liked that he couldn't kill himself (although I don't think he nomally transforms fast enough to stop a bullet from travelling about two foot). He can't even suffocate to death in laughing gas either, apparently. PAD did something similar on the final issue of his run, where he had Bruce trying to commit suicide, and the Hulk preventing it.

I just don't get where it fit in the timeline. It seemed to take place near the start, possibly right after Bruce became the Hulk, but then why was Samson there (acting nothing like Samson in any way)? If it was early in the Hulk's life, it might explain why Bruce had less control than he normally seems to, but again, it if it's close to the original creation, then it shouldn't be the dumb savage Hulk. I don't mind it when the timeline is changed or modified in a way that makes sense (such as the almost decade old Merged Hulk suddenly becoming the Professor), but it has to make some sense. The problem with the Banner series is that it didn't actually resolve Bruce's problem, either in regards to killing himself, ofr controlling the Hulk. He's a bit too laid back about it in the monthly, if he's going to have a past as a mass-murderer.

I believe that the "Startling Stories" (of which "Banner" was the first) aren't supposed to be part of regular continuity.

I base this belief on the fact that the NEXT "Startling Story," coming out in May, is "The Megalomaniacal Spider-Man" which, from the brief story description which I won't mention here to avoid spoiling, shouldn't fit into Spider-Man 'canon.'

Um... Okay, I'm confused. I know "Banner" is the name of the guy that turns into the Hulk, but that doesn't make sense the way you've used it a few times (such as "Banner series"). Explain.

"Banner" was a four-book "Startling Stories" mini-series. Hence, it is not "Banner Series" but "'Banner' series."

Are We Clear? [Smile]

The problem is is that Marvel make pretty clear at the beginning of the first Startling Stories issue that this isn't a "What if", or "Elseworlds series". It's adult quadries for their normal characters.

the limited series could be placed around the time that Samson first got his powers. He was a bit of a prick in those days, since he had essentially become his childhood fantasy.

It still doesn't work, but it at least explains why he was wearing a variation of his original (and really stupid looking) thunderbolt costume.

The biggest problem I see is the story Bruce told Samson, how he was bound up, and dropped out of a plane onto enemy territory...When did THAT happen?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Ah. And does "Banner" as a title have anything to do w/ B. Banner the character?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Kind of. I suppose it's suppossed to be focussing on him, rather than the Hulk, but that's doesn't quite work. Banner is the Hulk. He's got multiple personalities, each affecting the other. The Hulk appears in the Banner series at least as much as he does in the normal monthly (when we're going through a period that Banner changes, at least).
