We may never know who Darth Sidious is, perhaps not until the next movie comes out. So I'm willing to take a guess, it is Senator Palpatine. How else would he obtain the powers needed to try to fry Luke in Return of the Jedi? And his use of the Sith cloak is very similar to his Emperor's robes.

And if the rules of the Sith are correct, then Palpatine is the Master and Vader/Anakin is his apprentice. I originally thought that Vader was the master-with-no-apprentice.

Having just reseen the movie, and this time with more time to study it, I discovered a few things. Sidiuos' name is mentioned my the Federation Viceroy. Everytime that Palpatine makes to do something in the Senate, Sidiuos tells the Viceroy that the Senate is being taken care of. And the clencher is Yoda's remark concerning Darth Maul that there is always an apprentence and and Master and they didn't know which maul was, the camera pans over and stops at Palpatine. A cinematic hint that he his behind something.
Sidious and Palatine must be the same person.

Or, as someone somewhere mentioned - maybe they are clones of one another...

An issue to be dealt with in future movies - i.e. The Clone Wars...

Clones are a possiblities, but it doesn't jive with what was depicted in the movie. We know from the earlier movies that Palpatine becomes the Emperor and that the Emperor is Vader's Master. There are many clues to Sen. Palpatine's role in TPM. The first time I saw the movie, I watched it through the eyes of a spectator. The second time I watched it through the eyes of a director. Just as Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru dropped hints of Luke's father, the good Senator drops hints of his intentions.
I'm becoming wary of what the Phantom Menace actually is. Is it Anikan, as I had supected before, or is it the Empire, that Palpatine is slowing growing, planting the first seeds in epsiode one.

I was thinking about that just today actually. I get the feeling that the Phantom Menace is Sidious/Palpatine...he's so secretive and two faced throughout the whole of the movie that it would have to be.
