Hi! new gyu here, I was wondering what U guys thought about KOTOR Star Wars game? Whut class is the leetest? What class is the suck?
(i almost know there are no "best class" so ur personal prefs are good enuff for me)
Are there big dipherences btw easy, medium and hard or should i jus go hard from the start?
I've been playing nwn and diablo and also diablo 2 (owned) so im prolly ready for the kotor, in fact im prolly better than all of you lol!

Is doublewielding as worthless as in nevernights, that is u lose a lot of rating or dfens or stough when not singlewielding? My question is "is it"?

i use a geforce 4600 128 megabups, and 512 ram and my favorite packing software is winzip.

Thoughts??

Sincerely
(not nim the merciful)

I would have linked you to SomethingAwful's Weekend Web feature, but their site is down. Strangely, it seems they haven't ever visited a Star Trek forum. I guess we aren't the worst of the web... (perhaps mr. Kyanka is a Trekkie himself.. omglol am i rite guyz1)

1) You started it.

You say "scouts are noblest" with assurance, Cartman, is there some sort of ranking of nobility in KOTOR?
And one loses mobility by using two sabers? That is very strange, it should be the opposite, larger arcs and speed available, shouldn't it?
The scout sounds nice, how is the game set up regarding items and armor? What does one look for and praise highly when going through loot? Can one even get loot from corpses?
Also, contrary to Diablo and NWN (owned), there isn't much magic in Star Wars except for The Force, so you can't very well have "Blastvest of Shining Ardent" with like 10% Cold Resist and Attacker Takes 5 Damage lol", right?
What's the substitute system?

And you say that the Jedi Knight-series (love Academy) aren't fully Lucasarts because parts of the production was outsourced, but so is KOTOR, as far as I've heard, with Raven Software and Bioware actually building it.
In fact, isn't KOTOR using the same graphics engine as Neverwinter Nights?

Cartman: I forgot to mention, yes my comp may suck but I just performed a prime computation on us and it says that I could, and I quote, "beat you in any RPG or FPS using mainly buttcheeks", whatever the hell that means. What do you think?
Oh, sorry, you may answer my earlier questions first.

Nim, did you actually write that, or is this a quote from some other board. I'm confused now.

I think your computer is writing cheques its hardware can't cash, turnip muncher.

Now then, about KOTOR. There is no nobility ranking as such, but the three main classes are sufficiently unique and adjustable that you have good control over how much of a goodie-two-shoe your virgin character will be, and NPCs will react to you accordingly (don't walk into room full of Mandalorians if you're a Republican soldier, because they'll shoot first with a vengeance and not ask questions later). It's built around a modified version of the third edition DnD ruleset (d20), so if you've played NWN, you'll breeze through character creation in KOTOR. The only aspect that's absent from NWN is alignment, since your actions during the course of the game will gradually nudge you toward the light or dark side anyway.

While you can obviously cover a larger arc with two sabres and inflict more damage than with just one, it does affect your speed if you don't have the TWF feat as well (as you can wield two weapons with any character, even one that doesn't). Badly. And your defense rating will also plummet like a rock, so don't leave home without it.

As for loot, there are three categories of stough (quest/equippable/utility) that each have dozens of items in them, most of which are the standard fare weapons, armor, implants, etc, that help you in combat and some of which are the not-so standard fare *********** that I'll let you discover on your own. And yes, most corpses have the decency to drop something for you, too.

And last but not least, your character has Force Powers (you know, choke, push, mindfuck) which grow stronger as you rank up more kills and act as a perfect substitute for the classic RPG spells. All pretty similar to Dark Forces I, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, Dark Forces III: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and Dark Forces IV: Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy, actually. B)

Any OTHER kvestions, or will you just beg for mercy now?

Hao, paydirt.

"I think your computer is writing cheques its hardware can't cash, turnip muncher."

WHAT??? You're saying I ain't showing collateral?
Well that might be, it is a Dell after all, they can be somewhat beefy in attitude, at least their salesrep is.
Or, - , I was talking out of the ass, so to speak. One of the two. *shrug* It's basically a crapshoot.

About the TWF feat, I remember a similar thing in NWN, I got it for my Katana+Dagger swordgirl, but she was a worthless drama-queen, so two-thirds in I replayed the game with a Half-Orc Monk instead ("Fist-Of-The-North-Star" + hands the size of mallets), he also required the dual-wield feat to function properly.
I loved that man, I got reminded of him when watching a certain "Clone Wars"-episode, as the highlevel Monk-class gets the highest number of attacks per round in all DnD, or so I've heard.

I don't suppose there's an option for unarmed combat in KotoR, is there?

Your descriptions of those item-categories whets my appetite, what word could possibly have all those stars in it?
Also, implants? I haven't seen a lot of that in the SW-universe, mostly just prosthetics. Everything remotely cyberpunk is yum.

And yes, I'm counting on the Force Powers to be the meat and potatoes of the game, like in all the later Jedi-games.

But I have to disagree about your bunching "Dark Forces I" in there with them, that game feels like a bowling alley in retrospect, with stormtroopers for pins.

I think this is just the right time to get "KotoR", I can get it for a steal at any game-store (well I like having the manual) and "Teh Sith Lordz" seems not so far off anymore.
Truly, we live in interesting times! Also, I can ForceTrain u with my buttcheeks, and crack sandpeas, whichever comes first.

Well I like to believe I don't plagiarize. *gentle snicker*
But what with the information exchange in this day and age, I don't blame you for asking.

I mean at the rate things are going? Sheesh!
I said this before, I don't know what weapons will be used in world war 3, but I do know that world war 4 will be fought with stones and spears.
I'tellya.
You can quote me on that, btw.

Harry: I think the main reason Kyanka is somewhat lenient to Trekkies is because it's too easy a target.
Like if a famous New York standup-comedian would do a gig consisting only of "women are crazy/weird-but-smart and men are dumb-and-singleminded". Ha. Ha. Ha. AH?? Boot To The Head!

Mainstream jokers have gone after Trek since the 60's, SomethingAwful seems to like fresh meat.

Don't bury my figurines at the center of the Coliseum, please. And when will the answers come?

You can add this question to the batch: Is clothing, facial features and saber design configurable, like in "Jedi Academy"?

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

Hao, blackjack.

(OK, OK, I had, like, totally gambled that you were going to buy the game before knowing the answers, so I could skimp on my responsibility of giving them. Damn you.)

Ahem. So.

Unarmed combat: no. You'll have to wait for the sequel for that.

Implants: don't think too much of them, they're just traditional RPG stat-raisers in a cyberpunkish trench coat.

Faces and clothes: yes, those are customizable, though not quite on the same level as, say, EVE. Saber hilt design and blade color can also be personalized, but it's fairly basic.

WILL THAT BE ALL FOR NOW, SIR?

Yes, you may retire, tomorrow will be a long day. I'll fetch the brandy-snifter myself, it's ok.

Hey I'm resurrecting an old thread. Again. In your face, 2006.

No, but I'm re-obsessed with KoTOR and doing the glitches and stuff and wondered if anyone else stumbled into the same pit. For those who don't know (we'll call them rational human beings with social lives), basically it's possible to make your entire party Jedis (it is awesome to see Zaalbar swing a lightsaber) and also to artificially bump up your Attribute Points and get crazy feats and Force Powers really early in the game... Just really time-consuming. Anyone else "hack" KoTOR?

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

I recently picked KOTOR up from a used game tore for cheap. Never played it. Loving it. Still stuck on the first planet though, after three weeks of occasional play. I'm going to assume you get OFF of it at some point. [Wink]

There's a program called KoTOR Modding Tool I think. It let's you do all kinds of crazy things. There are also some fan made items that open up a kind of cheat menu. I find it's more fun to just give your character a little boost in abilities at the start of the game, then allow it to progress normally.

Hey Mark, you do get off that planet eventually. But it does take a REALLY long time. I remember thinking "Is this it? Is this the game?" my first time through. The rest of the game goes a bit faster and while there are some choke points (nyuk, nyuk) the vistas tend to be a bit more satifying than, say, Taris Underworld.

Aaah kotor. When I started this thread I was but the student.

Mark: Hang in there, once you get your free pick of planets it's all good, ol' buddy. Getting the first lightsaber is a nice ceremony.

I've played the follow-up, "Sith Lords", more times than I can remember. I've still got one build that's the best yet, always something you can improve on. Hitting dark side mastery before even leaving the first planet.

I always play dark nowadays. Once you go Darth, you can't go, um, barth.

Yeah I gotta replay KOTOR 1 and 2 someday. Right now I re-obsessed with Battlefront 2 now that I added this mod which adds more gamemodes to the stock maps. I played Hoth in the Clone Wars era and rode around in Prototype-ish AT-ST. Kewl.

Posted by Da_bang80 (Member # 528) on :

I believe it's called an AT-RT or All Terrain Recon Transport.

Who here would agree that Batlefront 2 wasn't as good as the first? Sure the Jedi/heroes were neat, but I did better playing as a regular soldier. The space battles were fun for a while but they were pretty repetitive. And the AI seemed a little more intelligent in the first one.

Thanks, I'll look forward to it then. And also to not having to brighten my TV screen every time I go one level deeper in this place...

Um...no it's called the AT-XT

It's from the Clone Wars video game. The AT-RT comes in the standard, un-modded version of BF2.

Posted by Da_bang80 (Member # 528) on :

Ah, I see. Ok. I heard of the AT-XT, didn't know that was what you meant. I'm still waiting for a mod that lets you play as Princess Leia slave girl. That would be hawt...

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

I think somebody did make a slave Leia, but I don't she ever found her way into a mod. I'll find out later.

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

There is a Slave-girl outfit in Kotor 2. Delectable.

Posted by Da_bang80 (Member # 528) on :

Ya, I noticed that. I tried using the KoTOR mod tool to change a male characters body type into a female characters while still maintaining the male character gameplay. That way I got to wear the slave outfit, and have wild lesbian sex with all the female NPC's you picked up. [Big Grin]

Posted by bX (Member # 419) on :

And I can't seem to get a girlfriend. WTF?

So after much labor and experimentation, my main characters are ridiculously overpowered with big Attribute bonuses and crazy VP and FP. It's fun taking on all the Mandalorians in solo mode. I've discovered that the game doesn't like to let you triple-class once you're a Jedi. So that for characters who started out as Jedi (Bastilla, Juhani and Jolee) while you can cross-class with another Jedi, trying to add the fake level beyond that seems to lock up the game. At least on Dantooine.

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

I miss Dantooine, haven't played the first one for years. I wonder if I'll have time to play it through one last time before the new one is released by LucasArts.

Yes, staying with two levels in Jedi classes prevents the "Jack of all trades, master of none".

Are you playing good or bad?

Posted by bX (Member # 419) on :

Oh bad to the bone this time. It's funny (to me), the first time through I'd go through the conversations a couple times to see if I could maximise light side points, and now I'm doing the opposite. Just universally being a total dick. I'm worried that'll mean I won't be able to get some of the NPC side quests though. (How many times can I tell Mission that she should quit whining and shut her cake hole?)

Oh Dantooine, it's really nice there. Not sure I get the gasbag manta rays, but, mmm, peaceful.

It would be awesome if you could fake level triple-class with a Counselor and get those 2 forcepowers every time or just accumulate them using the Attribute method, but I suppose I'll have to settle for just ridiculously overpowered. As a Level 4 Scout/Level 3 Jedi Sentinel with most of his Stats in the 30s, my PC already has Force Lightning, Death Field and pretty much all the Feats.

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

You go back to Dantooine in "Sith Lords", I see I was thinking of Tatooine, I liked the dunes and sun.

You shouldn't be evil all the time to all the party members just to keep with the dark side line (even though it's fun), you mostly only have to agree with the evil ones in reasoning and arguments (47, the mandalorian etc). If you are bitchy to Carth and Bastila you shoot yourself in the foot, they can lead to good things. Representing the dark side in their dialogues isn't so much being angry or obnoxious as trying to lead them into giving up their ethics, their convictions.

A good thing is to plan it so that if you're going to talk nice to a party member to get something out of him/her but get light side points, do it just before going on a mission that will net you evil points.
Although the mastery bonuses can be slightly overrated, especially late in the game, it is nice to be thorough.

quote:

That's good, also on big crowds the Fear-tree is good. Sure, the lightning takes care of them fast, but with *fear they stand there mortified, waiting for you.

Also, regarding my "PC", I think it has jedi mind trick, since I'm sitting so much in front of it. Hee.
(Oh god I'm soft and seasoned cmprd to 2005. *sigh*)

My computer can't handle Dantooine very well for some reason. As soon as I get out in the fields where all the action takes place my computer starts chugging away, and my characters start running really really fast all over the place. Same thing happens with the big temple on the last planet. Odd is what it is.

$$$$$Possible Spoilers$$$$$$$$$$$$

How many people were surprised at the giant plot twist after Bastila got caught by Darth No-jaw? (his real name escapes me at the moment)

I knew the game was hinting at something earlier on, but I didn't figure it out before then. And when I found out, I was like: WHAT!?!?!?!?!

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

Good old Malak, and nice that you were properly entertained by it.
The dantooine bug is very well-known and recorded, it should be adressed if you patch the game up to the latest version. Worked for me.

Malak is nice, if only he'd have dressed darker, he'd been purfeck. I like his signature saber-twirl before a fight. Didn't know the game engine could pull that sort of thing off until I saw it.

Posted by Da_bang80 (Member # 528) on :

Ya, the game engines actually pretty flexible, if you know how to talk to it.

Did you know about the little saber twirl trick with the X button? If you press it rapidly the sabers start to spin like helicoptor blades.

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

I'm on PC but yes, the "Flourish"-button is nice.
There is a Jedi Master in "Sith Lords" who does a nice scripted thing with his two-hander.
