It's hugely significant. Without it there'd be nothing to stop 421 being right next to 419. The knock-on effect of removing 420 could destabilise the entire number line above it.

4:20 is the national pot smoking time, I guess.... something like that.... don't ask me how I know that... I know a Lot of things that I probably shouldn't know, and I don't know how I learned them *shrug* weird....

As someone once explained it to me, 420 is the police code for possession of marijuana, or something to that effect. Therefore, variations of the number are associated w/ pot. In our high school yearbook, we had a survey that asked people for their favorite day of the year. Responses included "birthday", "Christmas", "February 30", etc. One common one was "April 20". Nobody knew what it meant, so we went ahead and printed it. We found out later that it was "4-20", a pot reference.
Of course, April 20 is also Hitler's birthday, which makes it even worse. Fortunately, this was long before that day also became associated w/ the Colorado school shoot-up...
