I'm going to be awkward and ask 2/3rds of a question.

Is it as viscous....

....as seen in Star Trek VI?

Is it a single unit, or a group of units given a specific name?

Yes, it is one of those two. :-)

Okay, yes, it is a single unit, as opposed to a group under one name.

It starts w/ a letter from 'A' to 'M'.

It is larger than an average Welsh Corgi dog.
It is humanoid.

Is the SSA allied with the Federation during the episode in which he was seen?

Also, was the SSA an enemy of the Federation during the canon Trek Timeline?

Yes, not really, no, yes.

Allow me to clarify the second one. The SSA was not "allied" w/ the UFP, as such. But it wasn't an enemy.

Summary:
It starts w/ a letter from 'A' to 'M'.
It is not larger than Frank.
It is larger than an average Welsh Corgi dog.
It is humanoid.
It is not a Federation citizen.
There is some question as to whether or not it can...
It is not the Ferengi.
It is a single unit, not a group.
It is native to the alpha/beta half of the galaxy.
It is not Balok.
It is not Barash.
It first appeared in TNG.
It is not "allied" w/ the Feds in any official way.
It is not an enemy of the UFP.
It is dependant upon technology.
