The Enterprise is enroute to a distant colony to deliver an air filter. Arriving, they find the colony has been attacked. While recovering survivors, the Enterprise is ambushed, takes heavy damage, and dives into a gas giant to even the odds.

**

We don't see any Gorn in this episode, and that makes them more horrifying. The most effective part of this episode is setting the tone for future encounters with these lizards.

This has strong "Starship Down" vibes, aaaaand ... it really didn't work for me. I wish they'd played up the "Balance of Terror" aspects more.

They're in combat ... and they leave the bridge to have a conference? Why?

In the end, Enterprise is able to directly destroy one Gorn ship, cause another to implode, and trick the Gorn mothership into destroying the third. However, in the end, Enterprise has to choose to flee (to fight another day) rather than tackle the superior Gorn mothership.

It’s quite amazing how many species there are that nobody knows anything about at any given point in Star Trek. Romulans! Ferengi! And not one point did anyone faced with a dead Breen say, you know what? Why don’t we just take a cheeky peek under the hood? And now the Gorn too.

Meanwhile it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find someone in the decades/centuries preceding “Q Who?” who DOESN’T already know about the Borg…

I did like the bit where La'an is like: "Lots of humans have met Gorn! And then the Gorn ATE them. Jeez, it's like how Americans talk about Christopher Columbus discovering North America -- where there were whole native tribes of human beings who were so glad to finally be discovered!"

I enjoyed the episode. Though while we’re commenting about things people aren’t supposed to know about, Michael comes pretty obviously since Spock and La’an mind-meld and share sibling traumas. Spock needs to work on his mental barriers; clearly he gets better at it since neither Kirk nor McCoy ever get a hint. [Wink]

I also enjoyed the episode. It might be my favorite so far.

Good seeing a La'an spotlight episode, and seeing her express emotions other than having an attitude with people.

Yeah, not seeing the Gorn definitely made them that much more terrifying. La'an's statement that everyone who has seen a Gorn is now dead also worked really well.

I foresee some new/old Gorn ships making their way to STO in the near-ish future. [Big Grin]

Hemmer continues to be awesome and I enjoy seeing the relationship between him and Uhura continue to develop, even if their subplot was very reminiscent of Geordi and Beverly in "Disaster".

Also, Michael gets brought up again... but still no love for Sybok at all. No wonder the guy left Vulcan and started a cult. [Razz]

Y'all thought it was terrifying? I was bored.

The modern colloquialism continues to bother me. It takes me out of the timeframe. I know this is the hip new universe & all that, but the Gen Z speech patterns don't fit.

I dunno. I want to like this. I should like this. It just doesn't sit right. The stories have sone good bits, but overall they still feel...I dunno, forced somehow? Chapel's snarkiness doesn't feel natural, or appropriate; same with Ortegas. Everything about Hemmer bothers me (especially his unmoving antennae). I feel like the flash & glitz is hiding something, but I don't know what.

I can‘t believe both La‘an and Pike forgot that they can‘t raise shields while thethered to the other vessel. And why couldn‘t they identify it when it clearly was a Federation design?

Spock‘s first mind meld with a human was retconned and Lt. Hemmer joins the other members of the main cast wearing incorrect rank insignia.

I guess they’ve just decided to really lean into the “The rank braids in the pilots (and most of TOS TBH) never really made sense, and we’re just adhering to that, I mean, jeez, you complain whenever we change anything, but we leave one thing the same and you still complain” angle. You’d expect the CE and CMO to at least be LCDRs but who knows? As someone said, more like HR than a military organisation. It’s often felt like position matters more than rank in Starfleet but it seems to be increasingly the rule.

See, that didn't bother me as much as Pike ordering shields down when they identified the ship -- who says that anyone from the Federation was on the ship at all?
