quote:Paramount is pushing back the release of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" from Dec. 25 to May 8, 2009, saying the pic's gross potential is greater as a summer tentpole.
Move was part of a major reshuffling to the studio's release calendar, as well as to DreamWorks' release sked. A second key change: DreamWorks' 2008 Ben Stiller summer comedy "Tropic Thunder" is moving from July 11 to Aug. 15.
Like Par, many of the majors are likely to revisit their release skeds in the wake of the writers' strike as they try to balance out their 2008 and 2009 calendars.
"Star Trek" has no competition in its new slot -- at least not so far, although it opens one week after 20th Century Fox bows "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and one week before Sony is slated to bow sequel "Angels and Demons."
Paramount also dated two titles. Martin Scorsese's Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer "Shutter Island" will be released Oct. 2, 2009.

Is that a reference to Robot Chicken?
I think a May release is better than a Christmas one. I think there was a lot of competition at that time wasn't there?

Is this actually the first time a trek movie has been a summer release? As I recall they're usually in the Nov-Feb bracket, so this is a good thing for the franchise...assuming the movie will be any good of course.

But five sucked so bad, and was up against some of the biggest summer openers in the eighties, and so many of them, that they decided not to open in the summer again.

But I think that's one of the reasons they decided to delay the opening. The writer's strike put so many things behind schedule, that (I think) not many big movies will be opening at the same time. Besides, it will give them time to polish up the final version and not rush to get the effects done. Unlike TMP, where the prints were being shipped out still wet from developing.

So why didn't they alter the release date for the teaser? That just came out a couple weeks ago. I can't believe Paramount didn't realize then, but do now, that May '09 would be better than December '08.

You have the directors edition i see? I was in 9th period study hall looking through some of these posts, and i found this thread. I printed it out and rushed downstairs to tell my science teacher, and resident school trekkie. We were both stunned. I guess I will have to talk to him about it more after mid-winter break...
But even though I am dissapointed, I do agree with B.J.

No, it's because John Lesher is the new top cock at Paramount, & he's making his imprint by moving shit around because he fucking well can. It's cock-waving, pure & simple.

I was daydreaming once about what I would do if I was somehow made CEO of Paramount, and I decided I'd call a massive vote of Trekkies about canonization of Trek V, Voyager, and Ent - even down to individual epsiodes...and finally decide wheter TAS was canon or not, too.
