i think Commodore Mike's comment somes it up:

He was great fun on trek- sorta the Liberace of TOS in his flamboant trelane charcater.
I really wonder how much of that was ad libbed.

Koloth was a great characters as well- back before Klingons were the silly honor-bound samuari whatevers.
