The omens were correct.

Set "20 years" after Nemesis, so, potentially circa 2399. No info on cast, show title, or plot, but it's a "new chapter" in Picard's life.

It's not a case of getting the band back together. After 20 years they'll all have gone their separate ways, nothing lasts forever after all.

Some key future dates (likely to be now confirmed to be alternate timelines if they weren't already accepted as such):

- The bogus future of TNG's "Future Imperfect" is set in 2383.
- Future Spock in ST ‘09 came from 2387.
- Geordi is commanding the USS Challenger in 2390.
- "All Good Things..." is partially set in an alternate 2395.

(There's also the possible future seen in DS9 "The Visitor," with glimpses of 2389, 2408, 2422 and 2450, but I think we can all agree this is one to not worry about too much)

... So we're potentially going further into the future than we've ever been (apart from the time of the E-J in the 26th, and Braxton & co in the 29th).

The one future that would be hard to ignore is the disappearance of Ambassador Spock and the destruction of Romulus - unless this is also shown to be an alternate timeline, which would pease some here because I know we've argued before about whether Future Spock in the Kelvinverse is OUR Spock. But if this future stands, then there's potential for a reincarnated Data - deleted scenes from Nemesis suggest his implanted memories in his ‘brother’ B-4 were starting to come through - commanding the E-E or E-F, with Geordi as his first officer. But of course, Brent Spiner would be the first to say he's way too old now. But then again, with all the digital de-ageing going on these days (and getting better all the time), anything is possible

So... yup.

I wonder if we’ll see any influence from Star Trek Online on this show or vice versa. Yes yes, I know, STO is non-canon, but there’s apparantly quite a bit of collaboration going on between the Discovery showrunners and the STO devs lately. Even talk of maybe STO’s version of the Iconians being spotted in Discovery’s Season 2 trailer.

I am entirely convinced that this is going to end up being a shitstorm, because I have zero faith in the current production team.

I’m very excited.

It certainly sounds like there might be some Last Jedi-esque characterization (“he may not be a captain anymore”) in exploring how things have changed over the years. But if there’s one person I would trust with the story of Jean-Luc Picard, it’s Sir Patrick Stewart. They must have a heck of a story pitch.

Just because it probably won’t fit with our preconceived notions doesn’t mean it’ll be bad.

...Also, everyone seems to have forgotten that Captain Geordi was also from an alternate timeline. [Wink]

Unless they choose to just avoid mentioning Romulans altogether, I assume the destruction of Romulus will remain canon, since the idea that Old Spock in the 2009 film was from the original Trek timeline was their whole argument that the new movies are "real" Trek, and not a reboot.

The fact that Stewart is saying things like "He may not be the Jean-Luc that you recognize and know so well." and "It will be ... something very, very different." has me a little worried. I mean, I hope that just means it won't be the same as TNG because Picard won't be flying around commanding the Enterprise. But, given the way most remakes and revivals these days seem to go, I feel like there's a good chance the words "dark" and "gritty" are hiding somewhere under the surface of those comments.

Stewart also said he would only bring Picard back for a very good reason, which must now have pulled up at his house in the form of a giant dumptruck full of money, so there's that.

Well, to be fair, I would certainly consider a giant dumptruck full of money pulling up to my house to be a very good reason to do anything.

That is exactly the source of my apprehension.

I did include it in the list of alternate timelines? But it's still a viable scenario, the difference between Voyager returning in 2377 (?) and just Kim and Chakotay returning in 2375 (?) wouldn't mean an utterly-diverged timeline...

So we’re going to have a show that takes place ten years before TOS, and a show that takes place twenty years after Nemesis, and both shows will most likely look the same because they’ll probably have the exact same production values.

Hmm.

Just bring in Sisko for a buddy cop story where they're both to old for this shit. Either way, I'm interested. I really hope they don't expect me to believe he's still a captain.

If they dust off the Enterprise-E, I hope they don't go overboard on updating the Sovereign-class design. Granted the original E was in service for 40 years with a major overhaul, so...

As long as they don’t use that horrible Enterprise-F from Star Trek Online. Ditto the Titan.
