I'm so mixed about this. I love Michelle Yeoh & I loved her as Captain Georgiou (although I wish she'd had an Asian name), & while I think she does well as ex-Empress Philippa, I really cannot stand the entire idea of Section 31.

Also, I would've liked her to remain a recurring adversary. Not a villain, mind you, but someone who challenges the Discovery crew in unexpected areas & ways.

I’m very skeptical of the idea of putting more emphasis on Section 31 also. And yes, Michelle Yeoh is amazing, and Georgiou is an interesting character. But there’s something I realized last night:

We’re talking about a character who is an avowed species supremacist, who is a mass murderer, who by any reasonable standards is a war criminal (not that many of her actions would be considered crimes where she came from), who ate sentient beings, and who doesn’t believe in protecting the ideals of equality and tolerance that Section 31 supposedly protects the Federation for.

And this character is going to be the protagonist in a Star Trek series?!?! This is the exact opposite of what the franchise is supposed to stand for.

That's exactly it, & I'm stealing that to repost elsewhere.

This just proves that Kurtzman has no clue what "Star Trek" is - let alone what it's about...

Surprised?

Which is why I'm one of those people that think The Orville is more Trek than STD ever will be.

I'm slightly annoyed at Hobbes' rather rude decision to be much more attractive than me though. That's just rude. - PsyLiam, Oct 27, 2005.

*Exasperated sigh*

So, what, we're up to six Trek series now?

Discovery
Short Treks
The Picard show
A "funny" animated series
A "serious" animated series
The Emperor Georgiou show

Can... can we just stop, please?

Nice try, CBS.

You know, there was a time when all these series would've had me ready to fly. Then Discovery came… and with that, CBS showed me that if there is one constant in this whole universe, it's the stupidity of Hollywood and its love for discarding continuity.

Afterwards, I began to realise CBS didn't really matter. We're all going to be discarded as consumers sometime. It's just a question of how and when. You will too, Captain.

Aren't you beginning to feel the canon changing on you? It's like a predator. It's stalking you. Oh, you can try and outrun it with DVDs, reruns, streaming services carrying the classics, but in the end CBS is going to hunt your continuity down… and make the kill.

Or y'know...it's just a show and should be viewed as such. Nothing more.

Despite my negative reaction above, I’m one of those fans who mostly enjoyed Discovery. Is it the story I wanted to see first for a glorious return of Star Trek? Not really. It’s a dark story, but it’s a good story with a relevant Star Trek message.

I’m very concerned by the premise of this new show, and I’m going to be very skeptical until it’s out. But I’ve also seen some of the interviews and reactions from the writers... and I also know how it’s unfair to fully judge a story until it’s actually told.

But this is the internet, and what else is the internet for if not complaining about stuff you don’t like instead of just ignoring it?

I'm definitely feeling like it's getting to be too much. Not sure I count Short Treks as its own show - unless they start doing ones based around the other shows yet to come.

Is it really that much, though? Let’s assume that they get all of the new shows ready for airing in 2020 (first or Nth season), and that all of them air in their entirety in the same year. Those seasons will probably each be 13 episodes long. Five shows gives us about 65 episodes... compared to the 52 per year we got from 1993 to 1999 with TNG+DS9+VOY.

Sure, it’s a lot, but it’s going to be spread out quite a bit more than in the 90’s. Considering CBS seems to be going for variety of tone and style, I don’t think it’ll be that bad. And it seems they have no intention of releasing them all at the same time. These quotes have lots of fluffy exec-speak, but they’re at least saying the right things.
