Ok, we all agree that pre-TNG fleets were dominated by Constitution, Constellation, and Excelsior class variants, so lets hear some class name theories (Canon).

Well, those are the only canon classes we know of from that era, plus the Oberth etc.

I believe the full list (compiled from canonical sources)is:
1. Antares Class
2. Class J (this is a canonical class from the episode "Menagerie"; I am not going to argue about this one. Either you know the episode and the reference or you don't.)
3. Constellation
4. Constitution (Variant 1 and 2)
5. Daedalus
6. Dreadnought-type starship
7. Excelsior
8. Miranda
9. Oberth
10. Scout-type starship
11. Soyuz

I am talking classes that are listed in the encyclopedia , but haven't really been seen.
I am trying to get my fellow trekker to try to come to agreement which classes are varients of the Constitution , Constellation , Excelsior

Merceds Class> Old Class possible U.S.S Centaur
Chimera Class ?
Korolev Class > Old Class
Istanbul Class > transport ...not important
Antares Class > Very old class
Apollo Class > assumed new class...not important
Mediterranean Class > Old Class
Surak Class > Old Class
Challenger Class > Constellation/Constitution Class variant ...old class
Hokule'a Class ...old class
Rigel Class > Constellation/Constitution variant
old class
Renaissance Class > Common belief , Ambassador Variant assumed still in service.
Springfield Class> conflicting theories> old class or new class
Yorkshire Class > old class
Andromedia Class > assumed new class
Wambundu Class> old class

Oh, you're talking about the entire pre-TNG timespan. I think people assumed you were only refering to the TOS era fleet.

Nope, I have a few kitbash designs , and I was trying to see if there were any theories on configurations for pre-TNG classes.

Because of the populartity of the Miranda , Constitution , Constellation , and Excelsior classes I am making the assumption that these unknown classes could be variants.

Example
Four nacelle Excelsior
Challenger Class
Centaur
Chimera Class
Hokule'a Class
Surak Class
Springfield Class
Yorkshire Class
Mediterranean Class
etc...

Just in reference to Bear's post - I reckon the centaur is a mirandaized version of the Excelsior class, and thus maybe it does have a class, and is not just a kitbash, and that I reckon its a Chimera class, for maybe its 'kitbashed' nature, or that both Chimeras and Centaurs are mythical creatures...

Actually, the Centaur is really rather small to be the Miranda-equivalent of the Excelsior. After all the Miranda has damn close to the same internal volume as the Constitution (seems strange but is in fact true) whilst the Centaur is considerably smaller than the Excelsior. A Miranda-ised Excelsior would be more like the Joshua Paul class from volume 3 of Jackill's. Or this fan built model which was inspired by the Jackill's design: USS Terrell

If we use the traditional designations then the Joshua Paul/USS Terrel would be a Heavy Frigate and the Centaur would be more along the lines of a Fast Frigate or a Destroyer. (Yes Frank, I know that these traditional designations aren't the same as the historical designations that you seem to hold sacred, but we've had that argument...)

I am really trying to compile a list of possible configuations for the names given in the encyclopedia. Wheither the centaur is Mirandized is beside the point. The over all configuaration is related to Miranda's, and that is the only conclusion being drawn here. The overall ratio of volume in comparing the two designs is beside the point, but I apprieciate the comment.

So far
Possibilies
Chimera Class > Centaur

keep them coming

You're right, IDC, I hold the language sacred.

It would be perfectly acceptable to call the Centaur a light frigate and the bigger ones heavy frigates.
