One of the things that make saucers at least halfway plausible is the idea that they would be atmospheric (re-)entry modules of aerodynamic shape.

But the Emmette is aerodynamic to begin with, and the saucer probably isn't...

I mean, here we see the saucer extends all the way to the top surface; the opening credits show it on the bottom as well. It's more of a saddle-ended pillbox than a saucer, really. Inventing uses for that fancy shape should be fun.
