My friends and I have great fun on a map a friend's brother created that looks like the U.K. and its immediate surroundings. (Secret key to winning: Start on Ireland.) Perhaps you could start out by trying to recreate some well-known and relatively simple geographical features?

My favorite StarCraft level was beautiful.. I made a space map with light plating.. then i added recessed dark plating.. it didnt look like anything, but when you look at the whole map, the dark plates spell 'NCC-71..(off the screen).. i clusted red yellow and blue marines around 'hull breaches' and still other breaches (burn marks, dark & damaged plating) had zerg swarms growing out of them...
