Hello, I believe that I have found an Ambassador during one of the battles (forgot which one)near the end of the war in a pic from Pedro's Shiporama. Since I don't know how to post pictures yet here is the address:
http://www.shiporama.org/images/tears/tears40.jpg

It is right under the Defiant-class in the lower right hand corner, above the Excelsior.

If it is an Ambassador it could prove that the class is still in service!

It's an Excelsior. Trust us. We know.

Actually, that does look like an Ambassador...

It may look like one at first glance, but it isn't. It only looks like one because the deflector array is blurred, making it look larger. If it were an Ambassador, the saucer would be larger and the nacelles lower.

Of course, there's also that little matter of our knowing for a fact that the Ambassador model is busted and reportedly sitting in someone's office somewhere. If anyone had gone to the trouble to make a new photgraphable model, it would not have been put in the background w/ dozens of other ships.

What this all boils down to is that, after, I think, "Emissary", There Are No New Ambassadors On Screen. Just can't happen.

Can't they use a CGI-model? The Akira is CGI.

We've had a large thread on this already. I was of the opinion it was an Ambassador. There then followed a cacophany of voices insisting it could not be, and was an excelsior, because being close friends of the CGI people we know there's no Ambassador model, and how dare you even question such a blatently obvious thing.

Since, however, it is a picture from a make-believe TV show, and to my mind still looks like an Ambassador, I say: It is an Ambassador. :P

It looks like an excelsior class justby the shape of the saucer and the location of the warp nacelles.

The position of the nacelles is the giveaway. If it were an Ambassador, they would not appear above the saucer the way they do in this image, especially at the angle we're looking at the ship from. The saucer and deflector almost appear like an Ambassador, but the nacelles prove it's an Excelsior.

Unless... maybe... it's an Ambassador variant with nacelles that are positioned higher.

Well, they could use a CGI model. But somebody has to make one first. Those people like to be paid money. If the studio had spent money on a new Ambassador model, do you really think they would have stuck in the background of a single episode, where it would hardly even be recognizable?

I agree. Mostly.

There is a single caveat I would mention. In the latest issue of Star Trek: The Magazine, there is an interview with a couple FX folks...Digital Muse, I think. Anyway, they mention that, in several cases, they have given the shows more then they have asked for. Voyager wants a shot of the ship by some weird anomaly, they give them that shot, plus a shot of the ship minus anomaly to be used as new stock footage. A show asks for a new ship design, they get several. These are artists, after all, who apparently really enjoy what they're doing. (And I imagine giving your customers something extra is a good way to ensure they remain your customers.)

My point is, it is not inconceivable that, in preparing these scenes with large numbers of ships, some precocious employee with some spare time would decide to make a crude mockup of an Ambassador, just for fun. Not a fully detailed model suitable for closeups, but just something that can provide the necessary background.

However, I don't think that anyone has ever found such a ship. Perhaps more importantly, no one from these companies, which for DS9 is either Digital Muse or Foundation Imaging, has mentioned anything like this.

Do the VFX guys really even know much about Trek? I mean, I can see them doing that extra stuff because they like doing VFX, but I would think it would take an actual Trek fan to think to make an Ambassador and stick it in.

I suppose it's possible. But, then, we'd probably hear about it long before this. All these supposed Amb sightings have been months after the eps have aired...
