If it's named after a battle it's a <i>Ticonderoga</i>-class <i>Aegis</i> guided-missile cruiser. These names make sense! Just like all your battleships were named after states. . . the largest thing the Royal Navy have, Destroyers are named after cities.<P>Once, I found a 1979 Jane's Fighting Ships in a second-hand bookstore. It was so strange to see all the ships we lost in the Falklands listed there. . . and also to learn that the <i>General Belgrano</i> was originally the <i>USS Phoenix</i>, only ship to actually BE at Pearl Harbour and survive. I knew the General Belgrano was a WWII era heavy Cruiser, but I didn't know it was in the Pearl Harbor attack. Also the only reason it was the last ship to survive is the fact it was sold the Argentin Navy instead of being mothballed (it likely was mothballed) and later sold for scrap, or sunk in a nuclear test, or in combat. As I understand it the <i>Phoenix/General Belgrano</i> was the only major ship still in port on that day not to be destroyed.<P>The Royal Navy carriers - or what would today be called Supercarriers, <i> a la Nimitz</i>-class, what we have instead (the <i>Invincible</i>-class) are what would be to the US Navy Marine Support Vessels - were discontinued in the mid-1960's under a Labour government, Dennis Healey then being Minister of Defence. It was a massive blunder that forever ended the great days of Britain's seapower. Plans are underway to bring them back, with construction planned on a new ship sometime after the Millenium. Think of it as Britain's own <i>Excalibur</i> (wouldn't it be cool if the first one was actually called the <i>Victory</i>?). 8) <br /> </font> </td></tr> </table></td></tr></table> <br /> <br />
