I was curious to find out how, in much detail (since it is late and the caffeine appears to no longer have any effect on my brain or body), does one get onto IRC? At one time I knew, but it seems it is lost in the cavernous reaches of my memory.

Great, thanks Ritten. For some reason I was thinking that you could access IRC through telnet. Don't ask me why, I just did. *shrug*
